I've recently become interested in collecting the Patlabor anime, especially since Maiden Japan has announced that they would be releasing both the original OVA and TV series on both DVD and Blu-ray, and I have a few questions regarding the Patlabor movies as far as DVDs are concerned.

I know that the first two Patlabor movies have already been released by Honneamise in both regular and collectors' editions, and that they are out of print and are now selling for bargain prices on the Internet. I've been thinking of buying the Honneamise release, but now I'm not sure I should. Seeing that Maiden Japan has the rights to both the OVA and TV show, it seems likely that in the near future they'll license and release the Patlabor movies as well.

Which brings me to another point: despite all evidence to the contrary, Honneamise is still in business. They are producing the last two volumes of the Gundam Unicorn blu-rays. I read about their company history on this site and wikipedia, and in 2008, the company was merged with Bandai Entertainment. If this is true, how are they still able to make products? And if Honneamise is still in business, that means they still have the rights to the Patlabor movies, and Maiden Japan will not be able to release them.

So should I wait until Maiden Japan releases the movies, or should I buy the Honneamise edition? Please clarify for me so I know what I should buy before it's too late.

You're all over the place here. You're confusing the Japan business with U.S. Bandai Visual (Japan) is the distributor for the Gundam Unicorn Blu-ray releases in North America. Sunrise is the one funding the English dub. Honneamise right now is more of a label of products for Bandai Visual.

If you want the Patlabor movies on DVD, get the Bandai Visual USA releases (preferably the LEs). If you want the Blu-ray release, I would and see what Maiden Japan may/may not do.

Yeah, you can get the movie LE set for real cheap, and it's probably worth it just for the extras. I have no doubts when/if Sentai gets the films they'll be fairly barebones.

A point of clarification, the Bandai USA versions of the movies do have the Honneamise label on them. They are probably advertised that way in some listings. Bothe LE's come with two books (story boards and Archive) and a second disk of extras. If you like that sort of thing you should get those as Maiden Japan is very unlikely to have anything of the sort.

The reason the Bandai USA/Honneamise version is selling so cheaply is that they were originally horribly expensive. Since at the time the earlier DVD version was not impossible to find no one bought them. What you are seeing for sale now is the unsold copies finally released at bargin prices. With the release of the TV and OAVs there will be more demand for the movies and they will go away.

I wouldn't wait if I were you. It is not a given that the movies will be re-released and if they are you will still want the extras from the earlier LEs. The same thing applies to the limited edition of the third movie from Pioneer.

just checked, and amazingly Hamilton Book still has the two LE's for $10 each. They list the publisher as "Image Entertainment" (?) but this is where I got mine a year ago, and they are the Bandai/ Honneamise release. Nothing sketchy about them. The only downside is that the company starts mailing you their catalog whether you want it or not.

Oh, can I ask you about your experience buying from them? I'm imagining any sets they're selling are remaindered stock that may have been on a shelf in a b&m store somewhere. Could you share what the condition was of your two LEs? Were they shelf-damaged at all?

(You see I have both sets but they have received a ding each, which saddens me. If it were a very cheap proposition, I wouldn't mind replacing them with something mint-condition.)
Thanks!

To the OP, you can also get Bandai Visual's release of the original Patlabor movies (all 3) on Bluray in Japan with english subtitles and dub (except the 3rd one). They are pricey though, so you may want to wait for a domestic release. Here;s a link to the first movie:

As I recall, Image was who handled BVUSA's distribution - it turned out not to be the silver bullet they were expecting.

The only extra I want is the original dub. What a waste...

@Animegomaniac
I'm not sure I follow you. Was the Bandai Visual dub different from the Manga dub of the first two movies??

If they were sitting in a store, they did nothing but sit there. IIRC, they were factory shrinkwrapped and had no dings and no evidence of removed tags or anything.

I also bought a $3 copy of Justice League: New Frontier in the same order and I find that I still haven't opened it, like the Patlabor movies it is in its original shrinkwrap and the only sticker is its original promotional tag "First Ever Justice League Animated Movie Rated PG-13".

I'd guess they're unsold warehouse stock. The only blemishes on the packages are the ones everyone gets after opening- the shiny boxes gather all fingerprints. If you really want to keep them in mint but still watchable condition consider just carefully cutting out an opening in the very stiff plastic shrinkwrap big enough to take out the contents individually.

Bandai Visual did a new dub, as noted in the reviews (done by Theron Martin). I recall Justin Sevakis writing in some article about how he also preferred the Manga dub.

Thanks! I'll think I'll probably get those extra copies, then.

OK, found that part of the review. I don't get the impression that Theron thought the original was that much better. For those that prefer the original dub, I assume the Manga Entertainment version can still be found from private sellers.

I don't usually watch the dubbed version, so I tend to not pay attention to the comments about it.

It's not the entire dub in particular I'd insist on but Peter Mariner as Gotoh. After looking into the titles, they so overproduced the SE DVDs {hard to find a title they didn't do this to} that the bare Bandai releases are both out of print and still dirt cheap.

I still don't want them. Since I found the second movie's dub to be enthralling {tone was "subdued" on both the original Japanese and the second dub? That's just another word for "boring", really and that's too easy a trap the Patlabor movies can fall into}, I have no reason to let go of that feeling because Bandai said so.

So, BD, original dub, second dub {go ahead, prove me wrong} original Japanese, now that's a release I can get behind. Preproduction sketches, outlines, storyboards, it's animation, I know how it's been made since the 1920's and it hasn't changed much.
