How come the fansub\dubbing groups are not identified in the content of the encyclopedia ? I noticed on a rival site that there is a section called "Which fansub groups do you like the best?" and they list all the groups working on the anime. Is it against the law to list fansub groups, and is that why the other site lists them as a survey?

Hmm, let's see... let's have a highly respected professional website list groups of illegal copyright infringers and provide links to their websites, encouraging people to illegally download pirated work instead of buying legal releases and supporting the industry that this website is a part of and supports.

Yeah, there's no problem here...

I assume that "rival site" doesn't have projects cooperating with Japanese content providers and North American licensees, does it?

First, the Encyclopedia lists credits of those who worked on anime titles before its finished form. Fansub groups start working after it has been released on broadcasting channels. Therefore they hardly fit the definition of "working on the anime."

Second, fansub groups are not legal companies, and their actions were neither authorized nor approved by copyright owners. Should fansub groups are listed as "companies" in the Encyclopedia, it's only a matter of time before someone adds its "official website" to the respective entry page, thus allowing site users (regardless registered forumites or not) to access and acquire the actual fansub files. Even if we editors actively deleting links to fansubbers' sites and/or direct download links within the "company" entries of fansubbers, it would take only seconds to dig up the actual file with a search engine once they have been identified in the Encyclopedia. If you were one of those copyright holders, would you like to do business with a company that openly facilitates its users acquiring your worst nightmare? Think about it.

It's not against the law, and it's always okay to discuss ABOUT fansubbing, such as its impacts and consequences to the anime market, but facilitating fansub acquisition -- such as identifying groups subbing [title X] in the Encyclopedia, or providing URL to acquire the actual files -- is not allowed.

Let that rival site have its specialty. Of course, a good number of the "fansub" groups listed over there are groups that rip subtitles from official streaming or disc releases, meaning there's not that much point in comparing their work.
