Those who've read my posts know that I'm interested in how America and Americans are portrayed in manga and anime. Well,a manga from a few years ago may be very well one of the goofiest I've ever found. It's also one that should have lasted longer.
It's called "Gun Blaze West" and it's by the same guy who did "Rurouni Kenshin,"Nobuhiro Watsuki. It seems he took a trip to America and he came back to Japan and did this. A really fun manga western that should have gone on a few more volumes. To find out why I think so,let's go to the story itself. It revolves around a young boy named Viu Barnes. (Couldn't Mr. Watsuki have thought up a better name for him?)

He wants to find a place called Gun Blaze West,a place where lawmen and outlaws can live in peace, but you have to know where it is and you have to go through a lot to get there. With some good friends,he just might succeed in getting there,if he lives long enough to find it.
Viu makes some good friends, like a Japanese girl descended from samurai and her friend,a hulking black man with a heart of gold. They fight bad guys like William Kenbrown and Target Kevin.

For the most part,"Gun Blaze West" was a delightful manga that in many ways should have lasted a few more volumes. I would have loved to have seen more of characters like Viu's older sister,Cissy. I also would have like to have seen how the relationship would have developed between Viu and Colice, the samurai girl who's good with knives.
I agreed with the review of the last volume of this series that was on this website. It was like Mr. Watsuki got a notice that his series was cancelled and he had to put his series on fast forward, like someone looking for his favorite show on an old videotape. But,that aside,I liked "Gun Blaze West." It's a goofy, strange take on the Old West that should have gone on a little longer. I liked this one. It's a shame that Mr. Watsuki's editors didn't feel the same way.
