I am thinking of joining [This is a known Bootleg Site] ([This is a Known Bootlegger]), but I can't figure out from their meagre FAQ whether or not the site is legal. Does anyone know? It broadcasts anime online--lots of popular series--so it's tempting. But it's not clear to me if they pay the companies for the right to show those series online. I want to know because I would like to join, but I never download anime illegally, since I believe in supporting the companies that bring us our shows.

No, it isn't legit. From what I've gathered, the owners probably ripped the media off the DVD, and, as their TOS states:

Quote:

2. You must have in your posession the original material.
3. If you do not have the original in your posession, you must not view the file under any circumstances.
4. [This is a Known Bootlegger] and all associated are not responsible for your actions.

They're trying to make a loophole in copyright laws saying that they are only broadcasting the anime to those who already own it. I'm sure most people don't bother with this, and are in fact breaking copyright laws, as is AnimeCrave.

Save your money, just buy or rent the DVDs.

It is illegal. Their TOS is hilarious...why would people who own the original material on DVDs want to watch it online? It is such a thinly disguised attempt to circumvent copyright laws.

It figures. It is really disgusting that they should pull something like that. It is getting so that you have to be an expert on the law to use half the internet these days. And that is exactly why I solicit information in forums before joining anything!
