Not to sound TOO biased or anything, but the only real contender for Best animated feature this year is Madagascar (which I haven't seen yet but heard it's pretty decent) and outside of that...I can't think of anything (Chicken Little looks lame)...but we turn to anime...let's see here:
HOWL'S MOVING CASTLE (gonna win and should win)
Steamboy (should get a nod for best sound and art direction as well)
The Place Promised in our Early Days
Appleseed (ok...kinda pushin it)
and of course, the future GREATEST movie of all time
Final Fantasy VII Advent Children
seriously, where's the competition from us this year?

Only real chance of even making it into the final three

Wasn't received as well as planned, too "omg not akira 2!"

Too small of a release, and isn't in ineligible to enter since it was produced/released last year in it's country of origin?

Falls into a lesser category of Spirits Within, just because it's adult- or more mature, and anime/CG/whaever, doesn't nessecerally make it good.

Sorry, but if you base the award for best animated film on a snazzy lookin' 100 minute swordfighting magic using romp that you've never seen then I don't think you're really qualified to comment on it

My money is increasingly on Wallace and Gromit: Curse of the Wererabbit taking Best Animated Feature this coming year. The characters are already double Oscar winners (for Best Animated Short), and Nick Park also has a third one (for Creature Comforts).
The Corpse Bride should also be a strong contender.
One advantage for Howl's Moving Castle getting nominated is that it's from a previous BAF Oscar winner, but the disadvantage is that it won't have Ebert pushing for it this time around, and Ebert is very influential for the smaller sideshow awards where a limited release like Howl might not otherwise be noticed by the bulk of the members of the Academy.
Also, we don't know how strongly Dreamworks will be FYC campaigning for Madagascar, which I enjoyed more than the Shrek films. And early buzz based on test screenings of Chicken Little is fairly positive.
In a five-slot situation, Howl's Moving Castle would get in without a doubt. Three, there's a reasobable chance, but it will be an uphill battle. As for chances of it winning... the competition's tougher, so we'll see.

Not that I disliked Howl, it's still imo the worst Ghibli film I've seen. I have a hard time believing it will win any rewards, The Incredibles is going to win that one over for sure.

Well, I can assure you that The Incredibles won't win the Best Animated Feature award next year, since it already won it at the Oscars this past February.

I'm hoping Corpse Bride wins the Best Animated Feature (if it's good, naturally, which it should be). It'd be nice if Howl made it, but the chances of that happening are slim. It wasn't as good as Spirited Away, in my opinion.

Doubt it. No one really loves it, except the Japanese, and they just made it a hit, because it's Miyazaki.

Yes, but it has British people in it, and that might help it sell to the Academy.

It hasn't gotten good reviews, but it's got the best animation of the lot, and has received positive audience reactions in theaters. I think it'll do better than expected, and at least get nominated.

Supposedly, it's getting a limited release. (According to a dvd supplement on Steamboy as reviewed by DVDFile.)

Doubt it. The full-length film appears to have lost the magic of the short. Plus it'd have to do at least as well as Chicken Run to get noticed.

It should, if the Academy liked dark animated films. But the fact that they rejected VHD: Bloodlust speaks otherwise. Of course, to be fair, they recently added new members, but the geezers could still out-number the youngsters.

They'll probably put everything on the line for it, considering the less-than-stellar box office returns for the film. Same goes with Robots.

Disney's films have yet to win any Best Animated Film awards. Pixar has won in their place. Chicken Little ci

Why? Burton hasn't had a good film since Ed Wood. And Johnny Depp's the only reason he isn't washed up. (Yeah, I liked Charlie, but I still prefer the Gene Wilder version, because it had better pacing.)

While teaser trailers can be misleading, the "magic" seemed there to me. Or, at least, it seemed on par with the rest of the series.
Plus, will it be "noticed" as much as Madagascar or Chicken Little? That much, I can't say, but you can be sure that it will be noticed by members of the Academy a bit more than Howl and a heckuva lot more than any other anime film this year, since I don't think any other anime film, including Steamboy (46 screens at its widest), made it to even 1/4th of the number of screens that Howl reached (202 screens at its widest).

They rejected VHD: Bloodlust because virtually no one in the Academy had heard of it as anything other than an obscure choice on the nomination ballot that was technically eligible but didn't have a prayer of making the cut. It got on 6 screens at its widest.

BAF hasn't been around long enough for conventional wisdom to be worth much of anything, and Chicken Little looks to be the strongest Disney-banner animated feature since, at least, Lilo & Stitch. There were several years in the 1990s when Disney would have clearly taken the award had it existed.
Besides, I'm not talking about Chicken Little winning, which I don't think will happen, just about it being nominated.
