Kurtzman told Latino Review that "We talked to Steven Spielberg about it. And he said, 'The action scenes of this movie are a given. But what is this movie really about? It's about a boy and his car.' We understood that immediately, because it's a throwback to the movies we were raised on... right now we're in the process of splitting the narrative, so that part of the movie is that story, and part is about the world's reaction to these aliens arriving - robots in disguise.

Well, the movie is on hold right now anyway because of the writers jumping ship over to M:I3. Doesn't sound like the producers are too pleased.

It should prove interesting how this "boy and his car" concept works out. In a way that's what G1 was (though it was cars and not car). They're in charge, all I can do is hope that they don't screw it up too badly.

So he wants to give depth to a series that sold toys back in the 80's?

I'll be the first in line.

cant say im a big transformers fan, i had the toys when i was a kid, i watched the show because it had my toys in it.

anything spielberg can do to the show will make it great for a whole new audience. im not sure how you can butcher a show that was just a bunch of talking transforming automobiles, i think there is no room to go backwards in the concept.

Thats just it though, one of the things that made Transformers, GI Joe, and all those other cartoons back then so great was that they were basically simple. You had good, you had bad, and they were constantly battling for supremacy. There was the iconic heroic figure Optimus Prime and his counterpart villain Megatron. Some of the episodes did try to inject some serious storyline matter but for the most part it was a series for kids, which ultimately was a vehicle for promoting the merchandise.

I think that the thing that most people don't want is some dramatic overdeveloped story about a boy and a "herbie" type of car that cracks silly jokes and plays pranks, while the two of them struggle to come to terms with their relationship. I mean, automobiles are just modes of transportation to most people, not living sentient beings. The movie could be ruined by putting too much storytelling into this movie, and involving deep and dramatic concepts which go right over the heads of most children. Watching my favorite Autobot do something to save the day or foil some evil plot by the Decepticons is what I enjoyed while watching the old series. Now I suppose it has more nostalgic value than anything for most people, and that is another reason they don't want to see a movie where things are different than what they remember.

I don't know why people are hating on AI. I thought it was a good movie, and would be a superb one if it cut to ending credits before that ridiculous ending.

haven't seen War of the Worlds though...

As for Transformers, I think they should let the franchise die. I loved the series when I was a kid, but what they make from it now is just bleh...

If Steven Spielberg wants to make a movie based on the Transformers, he could get help on the dramatic side from someone like Stephen King. Stephen King wrote a novel titled Christine a long time ago, and that was made into a movie. In a nutshell, it's about a car from Hell.

If that isn't enough, Spielberg himself can go back to one of his earliest movies, The Duel, and see what kind of drama he can take to apply to a movie featuring the Transformers.

----------

If Spielberg is going to make a movie based on anime, expect to see him bring forth a movie based on Lupin III. If I recal what I read in these forums a few months ago when I was a lurker, Spielberg was a big fan of Lupin III when it was released decades earlier.

It's a good thing that Don Murphy took Simon Furman onboard as a advisor. He atleast knew how to keep TF fans interested from 1984 till 1994.

Wasn't Transformers always about a new boy character meeting and befriending one of the autobots.

Yeah, basicly, that's why they "boy and his car" concept isn't really that bad.

BTW, they set the date, the movie hits theaters on 07/04/07. Yeah, 4th of July 2007, two years from now, and it's a Wednesday. If Transformers is the summer movie that Spielberg wants to push that year then you know it'll be big!

Transformers: The Movie was the little-loved 1986 animated feature that gave Optimus Prime, Megatron, et al., their first crack at the silver screen....

Um, what the hell are you talking about? The movie was great. It just didn't do well, because parents didn't want to take their kids to see Optimus Prime die.

That and the parents had already spent a ton of money on toys.

Anyway...

Good news the movie website is now live!

There's two answers to that one:

Cartoons: yes

Comics: No

Comics yes as well. In the old Marvel comics they replaced Spike with his "brother" Buster (Sparkplug was still there). In the Dreamwave comics they brought back Spike and Buster, but of course they were quite a bit older, they didn't really need a kid in that series because the human interaction was so high. Both the Armada and Energon comics had the respective kids from their shows. The upcoming IDW comics will also feature a kid.

So yeah, it's yes on both accounts.
