Let me the first to say that that was an excellent article. It's great to see an article that properly depicts Otakus simply as people with strong hobbies based on an open minded culture, that's probably the most accurate description I can think of. It's great to be an Otaku and know ultimately we're promoting world diversity and acceptence with such a simple gesture. Also that people shouldn't necessarily think of Otakus as bad but instead as a force to help bring about the future with such things as mentioned, that article was probably my first time seeing them depicted so positively, it's great to see.

Great article. This guy did his research, as opposed to the other articles about anime and otaku culture I've seen in America newsmedia. I even found out about stuff I didn't even know about. THAT'S the sign of a well-written, informed article.

That was a great article. (Though it took me forever to read Shocked But thats just me XP) I espeically enjoyed this quote from it...
Quote:
"...if anime fans ruled the world, it'd be a much more peaceful place -- much more embracing of new cultures. It'd be a world based on sharing boxes of Pocky and cans of Ramune soda."
He pauses to think.
"Well, there'd still be big guns. But also a lot more cultural understanding."

...Boy, and America thought it had a problem with obesity NOW... Anime hyper

Gym class would be replaced by DDR though, so maybe it wouldn't be so bad.

Seriously, fantastic article.

I also think this was a great article. The author got the facts straight, and I didn't spot any spelling errors. A lot of times, some title/name gets missplelled. I'd been wondering for some time now why Americans thought anime was porn, and I guess I got my question answered. Some of those cosplayers' outfits were a little on the skimpy side. "U.S.-Japan otaku arms race"... Shocked

For those of you interested I already posted a comparion and reaction to a load of quotes from the article in another forum, you can find it here

[Moderator edit: Since the above site can't be linked to here, here's a copy of your post]

Quote:
Here's probably now my favorite anime related quote, it's from an article discribing an anime convention that was on the 4th of July, just take a listen:

-------------------------------------------/

"A world where an ordinary guy can be a hero, a king -- or hell, a magical fairy princess."

-------------------------------------------\

And when an ordinary guy can be a "magical fairy princess" you know there's something very different going on, something very... disturbing.

The article is from an Anime News Network article, you can find it here:

http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/g.../07/07/apop.DTL

And here's another one from the article:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------/

"Unlike earlier research studies, which focused on suggesting ways to break this "perverse" and "immature" cycle of behavior, the NRI paper celebrates the fervor of the otaku as an engine for creativity, invention and, of course, the purchase of mass quantities of commercial product."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------\

As we all know, it's all about the purchase of mass quantities of commercial product, right guys? lol

O and here's another:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------/

"On the other hand, AX's Darold Higa suggests that the U.S. breed of otaku are not to be sneered at either. "I've heard some of our Japanese guests of honor say, 'Wow, I think American anime fans are even more passionate than Japanese fans,'" he says. Not that he believes a U.S.-Japan otaku arms race is likely to ever happen. "The fact is, both fandoms look at each other as being completely cool. I said in my speech at the Expo's opening ceremonies that if anime fans ruled the world, it'd be a much more peaceful place -- much more embracing of new cultures. It'd be a world based on sharing boxes of Pocky and cans of Ramune soda."

He pauses to think.

"Well, there'd still be big guns. But also a lot more cultural understanding."

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------\

That's right, big guns (in anime) and cultural understanding, now that's what the world really needs, am I right guys? You know I am! lol

But seriously, in all actuality I'm glad to see an article that rightly depicts Otakus as so highly reguarded for the right reasons.

God Bless Otakus lol

Reminds me once again that I... have story I wanna tell, the best story... ever! Seriously it is, I only wish I could get myself together and do it, I want to make a flash vid but it'd be like making a movie with a 32mm camera, it'll be difficult and I'm lazy but I should get around to it lol

Jeff Yang typically does excellent work. I've been following his work for a decade now. His book, Eastern Standard Time, is incredibly useful for all people interested in general topics of asian popular culture in the Western Hemisphere. The anime chapters in that book are fun to read, too. Smile4
