I was killing a bit of time and fussing over my books and decided to gather up some Info on em. At a glance i could see how much of the stuff on my shelves was put out by viz so I got curious about exactly how much more viz stuff i had.
Crunching some rough numbers i came up with this
Number of books (not including stuff i have on the way in the mail: 700
of wich:
340 Are by Viz
132 are by Tokyopop
108 are by Dark Horse
46 are by Kodansha/del rey
27 are by Yen press
24 are by Vertical
10 are by ADV
10 are by Comics1/Dr master
3 are by Seven seas
so about 48% of my stuff is by Viz. I suppose the biggest reason for that would be that Viz and Dark horse were the only 2 companies that have been around since I started buying manga and that DH dabble in other stuff while viz are more dedicated.
I didn't count the 14 volumes of lone wolf and cub I have as im trying to sell those so with any luck they wont be in the collection for much longer (though i'll be getting the new omnibus ones so it'll be back either way)
thought it was an interesting way to spend 20mins

My collection's tiny by comparison, but this seems like fun:
48 manga volumes
43 books
21 from Yen Press
8 from Bandai
5 from Dark Horse(1 being a 3-in-1 omnibus)
3 from Seven Seas(2 being 2.5-in-1 omnibuses)
3 from Kodansha
2 from Comics One
1 from DrMaster
So apparently 34% of my collection is yonkoma and 40% is in that size. The things you learn when you crunch numbers.

(this totally didn't take me only 20 minutes, but whatever. )
I have 2,034 manga in my spreadsheet.
920 are Viz (407 Shojo Beat, 292 Shonen Jump, 221 Miscelaneous)
451 are Tokyopop
233 are Del Rey/Kodansha
176 are Yen Press/Ice Kunion
112 are CMX
51 are Go!Comi
18 are DMP
16 are Dark Horse
16 are Netcomics
12 are Seven Seas
9 are Vertical
8 are DrMaster
5 are Broccoli
4 are Aurora
2 are Infinity Studios
1 is ADV
DMP's number is artificially low because I didn't include the 30-50 some odd yaoi one-shots lying around. Too much trouble. >_> And Kodansha's number should technically be higher, since I've been bringing a lot of books home with me, but I haven't actually updated my main list since last December, so...
I was expecting the high numbers for Viz and Tokyopop (after all, they do/did publish the most), but I was not expecting Viz to dominate quite that much. Practically half my collection are Viz books! The Shojo Beat manga (407) rivals Tokyopop for the top spot all on its own, and I'm sure it'll catch up in a year or two. I'm also kinda surprised at CMX, since I only ever really bought CMX stuff the summer after they shut down... I guess I binged that summer.

Good to see im not the only one taken aback at how viz dominates the shelf space lol.
I didn't have any CMX stuff as i was boycotting em and would not suffer em to exist, from listening to insider stories of how they were run i dont regret that decision even though i missed out on Emma because of it

Since Viz is so dominant in my collection I just had to subtract the volumes done by other publishers, it didn't take me that long
Viz: 310
Dark Horse: 72
Del Rey/Kodansha: 15
Tokyopop: 9
Vertical: 5
Fanfare/Ponent Mon: 3
Yen Press: 2
It could also be interesting to see the results divided by demography.

I have a paltry collection by the standards of many people here, but I love me some data, so I'll play.
For comparability's sake, I counted by the number of individual volumes for omnibuses. For example, even though I have Girl Friends in two omnibuses, I counted it as five volumes.
Viz 36 [24.00%]
Dark Horse 34 [22.67%] (Mostly the collected works of Masamune Shirow with Hellsing and what they printed of Reiko the Zombie Shop for good measure)
Vertical 31 [20.67%]
Seven Seas 19 [12.67%] (Six of these are the abandoned Hayate X Blade)
Kodansha 10 [6.67%] (This will grow; they have several titles that I want)
Yen Press 5 [3.33%]
Fantagraphics 4 [2.67%]
Udon 4 [2.67%] (Just the four lonely volumes of their aborted complete edition of Silent Möbius)
CPM 3 [2.00%] (I almost forgot this; I own three volumes of Alien Nine that came in a set with the DVD)
ComicsOne 2 [1.33%]
Random House 2 [1.33%]
Total: 150 volumes
I'm surprised that Viz took the lead in my collection too, although at least by a far smaller margin. I'm slightly surprised that Vertical wasn't the largest share; they're by far my favorite publisher. Still, no publisher has dominant share of my collection. It's like the anime equivalent of the parliament of the Netherlands! (Wait... did I just make Ken Sasaki the manga equivalent of Jan Peter Balkenende*?)
*I know that it's Mark Rutte now, but Balkenende is a much funnier-sounding name.

I counted all my omnibus volumes as a single book as they were a single purchase and all contain different amounts of volumes (usually 3 but there are some that have 2)
I was mostly just surprised at how large the margin was between viz and the rest, my collection started out with mostly Dark horse stuff as they had all the shirow works but then watching the sci fi channel got me into tenchi so i had to have some tenchi books and so viz was introduced.

Total volumes (omnibuses counted as one volume each): 1169
375 are Viz
257 are Dark Horse
127 are Tokyopop
112 are Del Rey/Kodansha
81 are Yen Press/ICE Kunion
65 are Vertical
42 are Chuang Yi/Madman
32 are Seven Seas
21 are ADV
14 are CMX
11 are Fanfare/Ponent Mon
8 are Harper Collins
6 are DMP
4 are Infinity Studios
3 are Central Park Media
3 are Drawn and Quarterly
2 are Last Gasp
2 are NBM
2 are Udon
1 is Blast
1 is British Museum Press
1 is Cocoro
1 is Fantagraphics
1 is IDW
1 is One Peace
1 is Stone Bridge Press
I included Berserk under Dark Horse instead of DMP.
I kinda cheated by including stuff I intend to get rid of, but never get around to. Not counting those the Chuang Yi/Madman total would be more than halved and the four Infinity Studios volumes (what they released of Blood Alone, which I had to replace with the Seven Seas editions because the binding on them simply disintegrated) would disappear altogether.
I also cheated by including a bunch of volumes that are in shipping but should arrive today and tomorrow, mostly volumes of Viz's Kekkaishi.
So, Viz makes up a third of my collection. It wasn't long ago that I had more Dark Horse than Viz, but other than Gantz and old, slow release series like Berserk and Blade of the Immortal I don't buy much of their stuff any more.

I didn't even know CMX existed until after I learned they were shutting down, so I missed out on the whole Tenjo Tenge fiasco and only came in after the bloggers started lamenting all the series that were going OOP. Turns out that CMX published a lot of series that I did like, and I wish I had actually been aware of their existence before they died out.
If companies' business practices had kept me from buying the manga I wanted, I would have practically no Tokyopop books on my shelves. I can like the series without liking the publisher. And hey, if your point was you didn't want to give CMX any of your money, now's a perfect time to collect some of them! since CMX obviously won't see a dime.

Divided up by demographic would be cool too, I guess, though I can already predict which order I'd be (shojo, shonen, seinen, josei)... I guess it would be interesting to see by just how much shojo does dominate the rest, since I do mostly buy that.

I'll check out demographics tomorrow maybe, not sure which way my collection would swing.
CMX just rubbed me the wrong way for some reason, they seemed to have a boner for grabbing anything and thinking about it later effectively locking up titles for ages and souring the market so to speak but yeah if I were up for it id add CMX titles to my "list of desperation buys" but I've learned that these titles sometimes come around again and i wouldn't put it past yen press to re-release emma and do a nice job of it to boot.

My first experience with CMX was picking up all four volumes of Testarotho back in 2006. It turned out the series had been cancelled in Japan in 2002, so the "ending" was an apology from the mangaka. I was really pissed off at them for releasing an already axed series and vowed not to buy anything from them again.
The next I heard of CMX was that they'd gone out of business - I wasn't even aware that they were still publishing. I picked up Astral Project and Dorothea before they went OOP and last year I bought all four volumes of Variante on eBay.
Now we know that CMX licensed series without first reading them, which would explain Testarotho. Because of that gaffe they missed out on my business and I missed out on some interesting titles - Madara was the one I regret missing the most.

Well, this got me to sit down and check things out. The results are largely predictable, but I did have more of some defunct publishers like ADV Manga that I originally thought. It breaks down as such
1121 Viz
370 Tokyopop
261 Kodansha/Del Rey
152 Yen Press
71 Seven Seas
41 Dark Horse
30 ADV Manga
19 Bandai
9 DrMaster
9 Vertical
7 CMX
7 Go Comi
4 Infinity Studio
3 Broccoli
3 Fantagraphics
for a total of 2107. I'm not really surprised that Viz is the most populous title in my collection, although I guess I am a little surprised that it makes up over half my collection. Kind of surprising that Tokyopop has been defunct for almost 2 years, yet it still has more than 100 volumes more than the next closest company. I guess I don't branch out all that much. I should try and remedy that.

A lot of my manga is sadly packed in boxes at the moment but I shall try to give the best estimate that I can.
By my count, I own 301 volumes of manga.
Viz: 131
Tokyopop: 74
Del Rey: 63
Kodansha: 11
ADV: 10
Yen Press: 6
Seven Seas: 4*
DMP: 1
Dark Horse: 1
*Note: I am counting the Gunslinger Girl omnibus as 2 volumes, not one, since the cover says 7-8, 9-10, etc... plus it keeps it consistent with the earlier ADV release, which is part of their numbers.
I am not at all surprised that Viz dominated my shelf as well. It is mostly the Shojo Beat line and the fact that they publish NANA, my favourite series, and Yu Watase, my favourite manga-ka (I have all of her series except for Absolute Boyfriend and Arata, which I am working on), both of which add a lot of volumes to the count.
I was a bit surprised to see the gap between Tokyopop and Del Rey, both who aren't really around anymore, and all the others. I guess the newer companies haven't picked up anything that really grabbed me yet, though most of the numbers do come from on-going series that I plan to pick up (Dark Horse being the exception, as their lone appearance is from Clover).

Ok, I've got mine
Total vols
1010
How I counted omnibuses: if it was originally published in individual vols and the omnibus is a direct collection of the vols, then it's the number of original vols. If it says #-#-# on the spine, then that's 3 too. If it's unspecific, then it's one vol.
Things not counted: things removed for sale (whether or not they've been sold yet)
Viz 407 (40.2%)
Tokyopop 244 (24.2%)
Vertical 75 (7.42%)
CMX 64
Yen Press 53
Dark Horse 44
Del Rey 28
DMP/801/June 21
ADV Manga 12
Go Comi 11
Comics One 9
Kodansha 8
Seven Seas 7
Fantagraphics 5
Last Gap 3
GEN 2
BoyBoy 2
Fanfare 1
Carlsen Comics 1
Eclipse 1
Doki Doki 1
Yeah, not surprised at all to see Viz dominate mine either. Since they have published a lot of long and awesome shojo, that clearly bumped the numbers.
Tokyopop was another go to for years too, so that's no surprising.
CMX is a bit surprising because I didn't find out about them until a few months before they went out. Yet I clearly have a good amount, more than publishers currently in, like Kodansha and Yen.
Most of my DMP stuff is Fumi Yoshinaga
All the ADV is Cromartie High School. I used to have other series, but this is the only one that needs to stay in my collection
I bet once I get more Higurashi, the Yen number will rise
I think Vertical's number is artificially low, because they published a lot of omnibus Tezuka things. For example, I did the breakdown for just the Tezuka goodness, and here's what I got
Total vols: 82
Vertical 37 (45.1%)
Dark Horse 27 (32.9%)
Viz 15 (18.3%)
DMP 2 (2.43%)
Carlsen 1 (1.21%)
So among my Tezuka manga, it's the Viz, lol! Dark Horse's number mostly come from here too, and another concentration of What's Michael? (those books are 80 pages each btw)
