I was going to ask that same question. 
It was! But that was ages ago. DH released it in both comic and TPB format. I guess the license has expired and now someone wants to release it in a more manga type format. I guess with the new movie and all, plus the possibility that the import ones might have been reprinted as well. It's one way to reintroduce a popular title. I don't really like Shirow, but I really hope they don't edit out the nudity and/or lesbian innuendo, or I'll just buy the used TPBs floating around. But I find it hard to believe the company lost the rights, as they published one of the side-stories/sequels in Super Manga Blast only a few years ago.

Oh, I forgot to add one little small detail.
Actually, 'Appleseed' was published by 'Dark Horse', but under an alternate label called 'Studio Proteus'. Thus the reason for the logo that is found on any of the manga titles they have published here in comic book form. In fact 'Appleseed' was the first title that spawned the creation of separate label.
