Looking forward to owning this. Still not entirely impressed with Aniplex's pricing though.

Odd episode count for this release. 9, 8 and 7? Unless set 3 packs a lot of extras it seems like an odd choice unless there is some reason ep 8 & 9 couldn't be broken up.

Still waiting on my dvds to get here sadly its still not here, thou i ordered it months ago.
I like the part where Johnny Yong Bosch fills a good bastard role, im so used to him as the hero type and lelouch that hearing he did a good "douche" parson the expression makes me want to watch the dub more.

I just bought this yesterday at Wai-con from Siren Visual So amazing that Australia doesn't have to wait over a year after the American release date until a R4 version is released. I loved watching this on Crunchyroll and can't wait to rewatch it, this time on my big screen TV =D And although I'm not a dub fan, I'm so glad it's dubbed because now my friend will eagerly watch it

I can't remember exactly, but the series was divided into 3 main arcs, so maybe they split the number of episodes per box set accordingly?

There's two extra "DVD only" episodes, probably one each for the second and third set (due to where the episodes are set in continuity), so it'll most likely be 9-9-8.

I hate hearing the constant comparisons to Baccano!
I'm not denying that they're there, not in the least because a lot of the same talent is behind both shows, but I think Durarara!! is good enough to stand on its own without the comparisons. No, I'm sorry, Durarara!! is not just good to stand on its own, its amazing. There is no strong plot in these opening episodes, but that somehow doesn't make them any less interesting to watch. I hope that someday we'll get to see the rest of the light novels animated (fyi there are 9 light novels and only the first 3 were animated).
I should mention that I hate Baccano! I watched the entire series and cannot remember most of the characters or even what the dang show was about (other than something about immortals).

At least you didn't have to read Siliconera's comparison of DRRR! to Shin Megami Tensei.
Seriously, Ishaan has got be the biggest, and lamest dumbass in otaku/game journalism today.
Anyways...I already asked this question, but of course, nobody answered so I'll ask again... How did they handle the Russian lines in the dub?
That said, I have absolutely no intentions of buying this set for that shit-price. Not until I see it somewhere in the $25-range.

The part where Simon gave directions to the tourists? They spoke in Russian with English subtitles.
About the high price point: I think the reasoning behind it is the quality that went into the release. Elaborate packaging, gorgeous encode (even my girlfriend could notice the how crisp the picture was compared to other DVD's), an English dub, etc. Could be the douchebag elitist in me, but that's how I'd go about justifying the price. This ain't your average R1 animu set, this is 100% QUALITY.

I definitely got wrapped up in them. It absolutely struck me over the course of the first 6-7 episodes just how wordy they felt, but I was never disinterested. Impressive execution.

Great! I only happened on the cast list a couple days ago, and it's certainly an eye-popper. It's been a while since I heard a dub I really enjoyed, so I'll definitely be trying it when I pick up the sets; especially after the claim that Kari Wahlgren improves on Celty...

Why? They're both awesome shows, and it's not like the entire review is comparative. I definitely haven't seen anybody claim Durarara!! can't stand on its--

Oh, no wonder. Really though? I mean they're both so... excellent!

The first third (although this set really should have included episode 10, as that's the end of the first arc more or less) is arguably the best that DRRR!! has to offer. At least, that's my personal opinion. DRRR!! is one of those shows that has highly entertaining side characters. Celty, Shizuo, Izaya, Dotachin and his gang, Simon, etc. are all quite enthralling to watch. And they're quite prominent in this set.
It's unfortunate, for me at least, that unlike Baccano! DRRR!! actually starts to focus extensively on only three characters, and those three characters are easily the lamest in all of Ikebukuro.

I agree, this is the major reason why I didn't like the second half of DRRR that much. I didn't hate it but it was kind of disappointing after such a great start, though I love the first half enough to buy the whole series; I still waiting for part 1, which just got ship about a week ago(it going to take awhile, since I live in Canada).

I disagree; DRRR!! was always going to have an ugly split if it was divided into three parts, since the cliffhangers don't stop coming after episode 9. Still, in terms of the revelation in episode 10, yeah, it would have been a better part 1 ending.

While you can make cases for most of those being side characters, Celty and Izaya at least are co-primary (all of the major plot points are a result of the games Izaya is playing to try and summon the Valkyrie, after all); I didn't feel like they were relegated to the background in the second arc, which I would have noticed since I agree that they are excellent characters.
