I have to disagree about a personalized lineup. It might be cool, but if you're going to translate all of them than just include them all. Otherwise it's just stripping us of content for no reason. Plus one of the points of stuff like this is to show people stuff that they may not normally look at. Hell, I feel like that's the whole point of putting them in a magazine format in the first place and not exclusively selling volumes: People will come for favorites they already have and then discover new things because they paid for them anyways

Good article. And it looks like Jason's tastes line-up pretty well with mine.
I too am not particularly happy with the fact that you can not buy digital back issues of Jump Alpha or Weekly Jump. I'm glad I started reading when I did (last week), instead of waiting for this week. Because you can't got back and buy last week's issue any more. That strikes me as a bit problematic in picking up new readers in the future. At the very least they should offer the last month's worth of Jump as available to purchase before they expire. As for the mix and match idea... sounds good on paper, but would probably be a logistical nightmare. What they could do however, is present an option to purchase individual chapters. And then also have a complete edition for a lower price then buying all the individuals separately. Like a music album on iTunes. Also I should probably point out, since it appears throughout the article. Shonen Jump Alpha is no longer called Shonen Jump Alpha. Its now Weekly Shonen Jump. The name change signifies them going day and date with Japan, as well as their new subscription plan no longer having purchased issues expire over time (which apparently was a thing with Alpha) |

To me,I'm more a print guy. I tend to like holding what I'm reading in my hands. I guess I'm sort of old fashioned that way.

Your Otaku USA plug doesn't link to that magazine's website, but rather to the website for the chicken farming magazine.

Yen Plus is even worse about back issues: even if you have been subscribing from the beginning you can only read the present issue and the last issue. None of the prior issues before that which is especially frustrating when you get behind. This is especially frustrating for series like Milkyway Hitchhiking which the company hasn't released graphic novels for despite it being in the magazine for over a year.
I'm trying to make an effort to catch-up on the parts of Naruto, Bleach and One Piece that I didn't read in Shonen Jump. While I'm 19 volumes into Bleach and 10 volumes into One Piece I've yet to start Naruto. Personally, I enjoy the newer series better as they're easier to jump into. I'm really enjoying Cross Manage and One-Punch Man. it's a shame Cross Manage doesn't seem to be doing well in Japan as it's really well done. I'd purchase the digital volumes if Viz would make them available. I really want to support the creators of these newer series. Okay, I'm done rambling now. |

I hold my tablet. Argument invalid.
WAIT. They still publish Yen Plus? Where? I know it's not on the Yes Press app. Edit: though it sounds like they utilize the worst sort of subscription service. Which I wouldn't be interested in. |

http://www.yenpress.com/yenplus/ More than half of it is YA novels adaptations now though and only one manga is being serialized in it. |

Oh. Well that's disappointing to hear. Vertical and Kodansha should get in on the digital anthology game IMO. The more the merrier. |

I read Shonen Jump for around 3 or 4 years since the 2nd issue, and I just picked up Shonen Jump again with the new change. The deal was just too good to not get.
So far, I've found lots of the series fairly easy to pick up, with the surprising exception of One Piece. One Piece has generally been a series that's fairly easy to jump on, and I've been on and off for a while. Naruto was fairly easy to pick up though. The new series have been fairly fun too. Nisekoi was pretty easy to get into with the preview chapter, even though I'm unclear if the central fake relationship has been exposed yet or not. Cross Manage has also been interesting, if not a little slow. And One Punch Man is pretty fun too. One of the biggest downsides I can see isn't really the fault of Viz's Shonen Jump, but rather the Japanese one, and that is the length of the chapters. Just when I'm getting into the groove of a series, it cuts off right away, especially in Naruto, Toriko, and One Punch Man. I suppose that's a side effect of reading american comics though, since they're significantly more dense. |

I think so too! I'd love to see an anthology from Vertical and Kodnasha! With titles like Chi's Sweet Home, Vinalnd Saga, No.6, and Utsubora they could put together some really neat magazines! |

That's the downside of manga in general. I don't read series on a week-by-week basis but on a volume-by-volume basis for that reason. Bleach is especially hard to read on a weekly basis; it comes off much better in huge multi-volume bursts. I am tempted to check this out, however, if only for the colored DBZ chapters. I'm curious if we'll finally get an uncut version... |

Speaking of DBZ, I checked Nicktoons' schedule for next week, and they'll be showing DBZ: The History of Trunks Friday, Feb. 8 at 9pm, followed by DBZ Kai ep. 98 at 10pm |

I like being able to hold physical books in my hands. I'd never get a tablet.
