I was perusing pictures of the monolithic shelves of ANN anime fans and I couldn't help but wonder how often people actually get to consume all their media. I don't have half what the average person who posts seems to have and I've still got discs I haven't looked at in years. Recently, I've been trying to part with a lot of my DVDs; there's only a handful of material I think I would want to re-watch many times and I definitely approach purchases a lot more carefully now. It's hard to get RID of this stuff! :p

Just to answer the thread title:
I have different ways to re-watch anime.
Usually, I would wait at least a month, or up to half a year to re-watch series. I don't own any DVDs/boxsets, so I end up watching streamed anime. This is my basic approach to re-watching any series.
I've been re-watching current episodes of the Winter 2011 animes. I watch the last episode and then the current episode.
Sometimes after I finish a series, I re-watch the whole series a week later.

It usually takes me about a year before I'm willing to go back and watch a program. Enough time has to have passed for me not to remember all the details and then I mostly watch two-three episodes at a time. I rarely re-watch something unless it has made a considerable impact on me. Taking that into account, the fact I watched Wandering Son again before the second episode speaks volumes.

I do re-watching differently from re-reading my manga. I find it easier to re-read my manga for some reason and I can only hold about 40 or so of my 560 some volumes at my dorm, so when I come back home, I'll take back anything I'm done with then pick out something I'd been craving earlier or just something I haven't read in a while and take it back with me. When you've only got maybe 3 series max at the dorm, it's much easier to cycle through what's there.
When it comes to rewatching anime on the other hand, there are more rules:
1) Nothing new that needs to be watched should be sitting on the shelf. Since I normally don't have more than 4 unwatched series at a time, it's usually not too bad
2) I should usually wait 6 months to rewatch something, 4 months if it was an instant 10 for me (like with Princess Tutu, which I watched 4 times in a year). I also re-read Banana Fish (my now favorite manga) 4 times within a year too. That's one way I can tell those two series were really special, if I couldn't go 3 months during the first year without craving it again.
3) Whatever floats my boat. Whatever I feel like rewatching is fine. I said the dorm has limitations, but I can bring a lot of anime with me if I've got a DVD binder (which I do). However, I do have a habit of watching like, 2/3rds of the series then fizzling out on my rewatch (I've just done that with Toward the Terra, I think it's because I rewatched it too soon, I saw it via fansubs, then liked it enough to buy, then started to watch my DVDs despite even at the time thinking "too soon")
4) Try to watch something I haven't for a while. Which means I should be rewatching Planetes since I've only seen that show once, but I know it's definitely worth the time to rewatch it.
But yeah, I will admit that when my collection was smaller, I rewatched stuff a lot more. That's why I always willingly sell or trade things that I don't have any desire to rewatch at any time in the future (I can usually tell after seeing a series if I'll ever want to rewatch it again, even if I still haven't *glares at Planetes*). I do kinda wish my collection were still really small so that I treasured the few things that were there more, come to think of it, now there's more stuff I wanna sell or trade given that I don't know why I'm keeping them since I know I have no desire to ever rewatch some of it....I don't want to force myself to sell anything that I might want to rewatch again and end up re-buying it, but I should also be more honest with stuff I won't ever watch.

I usually decide to rewatch something with a friend so I can hear their opinions about the series. I also rewatch a series after say a year and have seen more series in that genre. That way I can get a more accurate view of how I want to keep my rating for the series at.
When I first saw "Asu no Yoichi" I originally gave it an 8 or a 9.
Then i decided to watch it with a friend in college. but of us came to the conclusion that it is slightly better than most ecchis, but is still pretty mediocre. So I dropped my rating down to a 6. Then many ecchi series later, such as watching the worst of the worst like To love Ru, kiss x sis, My Bride is a mermaid, Nogizaka Haruka season 2, I decided Asu no yoichi was better than a 6.
After talking on the forum about Asu no Yoichi recently, I brought the series up to a 7.
still lower than what I originally gave it, but still shows an example of how rewatching a series after a year so and watching other series of the same genre can change your ideals about a show.

@Aoi_Sakaraba: Interesting, do you watch your anime on a computer? Western Digital has a portable USB HDD at 1 Terabyte, although it would probably be better to just get a hard drive dock or enclosure and grab an insanely cheap 2TB HDD. Otherwise, if you aren't too picky about your configuration something like the Popcorn Hour media tank would also take a HDD amongst other things.
I digress. Curious that everyone would mention they might need a year or so between viewings before giving it another go. I feel the same; oddly enough, some of my very favourite things are the ones I go back to the least. I guess I kind of go to the snack food a little easier. It's less demanding.

I usually only have 1 unwatched series at a time. Actually it would be more accurate to say that most of the time I have nothing new to watch, so much off my viewing is, in fact, re-watching. My favorite part of amine HANDS DOWN is re-watching a series I loved with someone who has never seen it. Seeing someone react the exact same way I did to seeing a particular scene is endlessly entertaining. But if I am just re-watching for my own sake I usually wait a year unless it is particularly heady in which case I might re-watch immediately to really wrap my head around it. But honestly I don't have a specific approach and I have never and probably will never re-watch most of my collection.

I mostly rewatch comedies when I'm feeling that I can't start anything new or when I don't want to concentrate too much. I've watched Detroit Metal City at least 5 times. I've put aside plenty of shows that I plan to rewatch someday, but that'll have to wait as a still have some quality stuff and classics on queue.

Since I usually have some sort of backlog, I don't rewatch as often as I could. Still, I would say that 6 months to a year is about the average time between first and second viewings. After that it depends on the show if and when I will watch it again. Also I will watch the show first with subtitles and then dubbed when I rewatch it. That way it's a little different upon second viewing.

I try to avoid it. There's about 10 anime in my list that I always want to re-watch, but I usually restrain myself, because I know I've seen them over 3 times and there's not much I can get out of it besides to ruin my good memories. Also, I'm well aware that I tend to start them just to drop it a few episodes later.
If anything, I'd like to start a yearly regime, but I'm so bad with dates and names.
Too much good stuff out there. No time to waste.

I generally put the DVD in the DVD player. That seems to work.
More seriously, if I feel like watching something I've already watched, I just will, no matter how much or how little backlog I've got. I tend to rewatch anime if there's a new work related to the anime I already own - a new series in the franchise, another movie, or a remake.
I also plan to re-watch some of the first anime I watched, so I can do a proper review of the anime for my profile, and see if my opinion of the show has changed seeing that I now "get" anime much more than what I did at the start. For example, one of the first anime shows I watched was FLCL, and I don't think I quite appreciated what the show was trying to do. If I watch it again, I will still probably not appreciate it, but on a different level entirely.

When I first started collecting anime DVDs and stuff last year, I used to rewatch stuff religious. In the 1st week I had my Princess Mononoke DVD, I made it a point to watch it 10 times. I then watched it at least once every month for few months after that. Watched my NT,HT in one sitting the same day I got it, and so forth.
Since then, though, I learned to rewatch them so frequently. I was afraid I was gonna burn myself out on the shows that I love. Sure, there are some series that I feel like I could rewatch every month(at least once) and never get tired of it(Baccano!, to name name's), but I've even controlled myself on rewatching that one. I find myself enjoying my anime more when I haven't watched them in a while anyway, so it's all good. I think I've got the perfect plan for rewatching to fit my style these days.

Mood is definitely a factor. If I feel like re-watching some series I have I go for it. I will note though when I watch anime in general I tend to sort of have a ratio.
I divide them up by current anime season, older anime, and re- watches. Pretty much watch as many new anime I want, 3-4 older shows, and generally 1-2 re-watches. The difference is though I only have to watch current anime once a week per episode. Older anime since I own the whole thing I can watch several episodes a day or at least once a day. Re-watching anime I do not have the sense of having to watch an episode each day, it is much more casual. I may even take a break in the middle of re-watching a series depending on my mood.

Hmm, I only rewatch stuff I really REALLY enjoyed. Or if Iwatched in fansubbed and then bought the DVD/BD's.
Still, I think my most watched series are Code Geass and Clannad, both of which I've only watched three times, twice in Japanese and once in English after I bought the DVD's.
Movies I rewatch a lot more, I've seen all the Ghibli movies at least 6 or 7 times, Laputa and Totoro probably more around 10 times or so.
and sometimes I just watch random episodes as with Pokemon. I never owned the complete series, only random VHS volumes, so sometimes I'd just pop in a VHS and watch it.
I've cut back on rewatching due to my backlog though.
