Right now I'm a bit ticked...
I went and bought a Get Backers book, then I caught Initial D (my favorite game) on the shelf...
I read it and got seriously pissed at what some of Tokyopop did to it...
It's hideous...
After watching First Stage in Japanese subbed, It almost burns my eye to see than instead of having the real characters personalities, they made them all "from the 'hood"
It just pisses me off...
I only have hard about what they did on GFaqs Intial D boards, but seeing and reading the actual thing makes me almost what to quit Initial D altogether...
What do you think?

The thing was that when Tokyopop did this, they were looking to air it on TV, so they did the "Tricked Out" English dub on it, changing names and the car names. The Network Execs that were shown this were aware of what it was and the original culture references in the Japanese version, so declined to have it shown on TV (correct me if I am wrong, I know I am on the right track though)
As for the manga, one would assume they did what they did because they thought it would sell, or that they though people who are into cars are like this. I have no clue since I never read the manga.
So, what we have is a true to the original Japanese audio and subtitles and a perverted English dub that was intended to be aired on TV.
If you liked the Japanese audio/subtitle version keep buying, just don't listen the the English dub. (I didn't like it because of the fact that the CG and regular animation contrast too much)

Okay, here's the real deal from a Car Enthusiast....
Due to a certain movie with an Orange Toyota Supra firing flames from its exhausts, Tokyopop tried to cash in on the Import Tuner Craze by snagging Initial D. To make it more "palatable" for US Audiances, Tokyopop renamed most of the Characters (Bunta is the only character not to be renamed in the first round) and tried to inject some "Street Slang" into the Anime and Manga.
Their efforts to push the Anime onto TV failed (Reasons unknown), and to cut their losses, Tokyopop took whatever of their "tricked-out" version episodes they had and stuffed it onto a DVD along with the Original Version.
On the Manga front, they did the same thing to they did with the Anime, only they also fudged abit with some of the car stats (Noticeable is the AE86 Trueno and the AE86 Levin share some of the same stats in a couple issues of the Manga).
What Tokyopop really didn't realize is that the difference between Initial D and "Ricers" is that most Ricers are in it for show. While the cars in Initial D look mostly stock (save for the Stickers of the teams), the intended audiance and the movie followed on tricked-out bodykits, Altezza Headlights, Blinged Rims, Fog Lights, Gaudy Spoilers, Massive Deafening Sound Systems, Neon, and NAWSSSSSSSSSSSS. Most of which would send you off a cliff and to immediate death if you went Touge Racing. Of course, the debate about weight shall be a different post entirely......
Also what Tokyopop never realized is that some Car Enthusiasts kinda hated "That Street Racing Movie" for a variety of reasons.
It shot up the prices of Toyota Supras. It's encouraging Insurance Companies to stop issuing and redeeming policies for even minor modifications (such as for Autocrossing and Gymkhana mods, which are not illegal and "rice" ). It's encouraging Illegal Street Racing (And resulting in Property Damage and Deaths). It's also drying up the supply of some other desireable cars as idiots "Rice-Out" the rides.
And many of them got the series via bootlegs from Hong Kong. Some Long Before Tokyopop snagged the license. Even some of the more well-known Tuner Magazines (Super Street is the most recent example) have posted links to sites on the net that sell Bootleg Initial D DVD's (in many cases, unintentionally).
But begining in Vol 12 or 13 of the Manga, Tokyopop made an effort to keep any following characters names strictly Japanese. Kasumi stayed Kasumi, and Wataru didn't get changed to Aki like in the Arcade Game.

I really don't care about cars or Initial D for that matter, so I really had no idea about these changes, but it's never suprising to hear about the "liberties" Tokyopop has taken when adapting manga. At this point in time, they've learned from their mistakes and would never dream of censoring anything (just recently one of their editiors dissed CMX and Viz on the matter) and seem to be getting much better with their translations. It's not uncommon for them to reprint an old series with new furnishings (where's an uncut Jiraishin though ), so I suppose an un-altered Initial D is a possibility in the future, but considering the length of the series and the fact that it's already selling well, I wouldn't count on it.

And to further add:
One of the most visable "mods" to a Toyota Corolla SR5/GT-S Hatch is the "Tofu Sticker."

You know the sad part? My exposure was to the anime first. They were pretty ugly. Then I looked at the manga, and they were still ugly. Even so, it kinda grew on me. Not that the artwork is gorgeous or anything, but I got used to it.

Hmm the art isn't ugly, Jackalope. The only ugly looking character are the females one (becaues Shuichi Shigeno can't draw female) and probably "Iggy" because of his fat lips. But he's the comic relief character and it makes him stand out Other then that, the cars and the speed line are drawn nicely. Shigeno's art defnitely improve on each volume and it's still one of my favorite manga right now. Since it was one of my first few manga, the name change actually helpt me seperate the character, so I don't really mind.
Other then that, the story is still pretty good if you like street racing manga. The slang doesn't really get in the way...actually I don't remember a lot of hip hop lingo, just a few now and then.

Admittedly, Shuichi Shigeno doesn't have a particularly pretty art style. But then, neither does Akira Toriyama.
What people tend to forget is that Initial D is a shonen series from back when shonen series didn't need to be strangled with girlie girl bishonen trappings. The characters are drawn to look more like everyday guys.
Sheesh folks, let's call a fish a fish here.
