I consider the three anime adaptions of the visual novels Kanon,
Air, and Clannad to be the greatest anime films in existence.
The beauty of the art combined with near overwhelming tragedy
which is perfectly counterbalanced by warmth and comedy is
sheer genius.
However, what do you think about these series? Do you
hold them in as high a place as I do or do you dislike them? Which
is your favorite? Your least favorite?
P.S. I still have yet to see much of Kanon so please don't spoil the
heck out of it for me. Pretty please?

Maybe with a different character design and girls that don't act so dumb they would be huge titles like Death Note, etc., but unfortunately those factors really detracted from my experience. To this day I still can't get beyond 1 minute of Kanon and Air.

I have only seen Air & Kanon, but both were pretty good.
Not sure if I would really want to buy them though.

Unfortunately anime adaptations of visual novels have not had a great track record with me. The immersion is removed from visual novels when it's adapted, something that's really key to most visual novels. So I've always come into most adaptations with a bit of skepticism.
I've only seen a couple of episodes (specifically 8 and 9) of Air and thought it was pretty terrible. It apparently gets better towards the end, but if that flashback is any indication of the melodrama of the end, I'll be fine with not watching this series.
Clannad is on my list though of series I want to check out. I'm not sure how much better it will fair than Air but I am hopeful.

I loved Kanon (2006) and also like Clannad and it's sequel. Air, on the other hand, I found exceeded my depression and contrivance quotas for a movie and I didn't like it all that much. I definitely would not want to see a whole show about it.

While I really loved Air and Clannad, and while I absolutely adore Kanon, I don't hold them in as high a regard as you seem to. I sort of have two opinions of these shows, a personal opinion and a more objective or critical opinion. The latter is actually quite in line with what Theron Martin wrote in his reviews of these shows, that they strain credibility, resorting to quick and easy emotional manipulation through melodrama, and utilizing character types which pander to a specific otaku audience. However, there is a definite sense of care and heart behind hem that allows them to pull this of quite well. Basically, they're pandering done right. To me, while I acknowledge their shortcomings, I still love them. The art is gorgeous, the writing often surprisingly good and clever, and there is always a strong sense of nostalgia which I really enjoy. I would never call them the best anime films of all time (for one thing, they aren't films, and for another, their structure is quite disjointed, jumping between character arcs which never fit together but must be made into a single story, just to name a few flaws), but I still do enjoy them immensely.
As for my favorite and least favorite, the former goes to Kanon, which I always felt combines the best elements of Key's storytelling style while smoothing out the flaws, and from which I get the strongest nostalgia rush. Plus winter is my favorite season, and Kanon captures it perfectly, and the dub removes some of the more irritating aspects of moe found in the Japanese track. My least favorite is Air, as it is by far the most disjointed and rushed of the three. Clannad could have been my favorite, if only you didn't have to wade through about 36 episodes to get to the best part.

I've only seen Air TV from those three, and I can honestly say it was one of the saddest things I've ever watched. That one scene on the beach brought me as close to tears as I've ever come in many, many years.
However, sadness is an emotion I try and avoid at all cost, which is why at this point I refuse to watch Clannad and Kanon. I don't know the specifics, but listening to other people's conversations about the shows, and knowing that they were made by the same people who did Air means that I have no desire to watch. It's the same reason I don't intend on watching Grave of the Fireflies: I just don't like that sort of thing.
So then, Air. It had some great music and art, but it really wasn't my cup of tea.

Don't worry, after the beautiful and powerful ending to Air, Maeda (the main writer for all 3 VNs/shows) lost his balls and made lotsa Deus Ex Machina things happen so that things end up happy... cause ya know, that's what always happens in real life
(Should be obvious which one is my favorite)

Watched all three, I remember not being able to finish Air, so I guess I didn't enjoy it.
I effing LOVE Clannad and After Story. Honestly, it was amazing !
With Kanon, I liked it, but I dont remember much of it, so to me, Clannad was better since I still remember all of it.

I liked Air precisely because it was serious, as many posters have mentioned. The other two shoehorn too deeply into Romantic and High School comedy. I think the Air movie is even better, especially because it tells the story without any of the "gal game" embellishments of the original.

I love me some melodrama but after watching my third Key visual novel adaptation (Air; I watched them in reverse production order) I think I was worn out. I try rewatching CLANNAD (my favourite) but I never really finish it as I get distracted and forget. While I like the shows, their rank in my head keeps slipping as new and shinier stuff come out or I get around to watching classics.
I'm talking about the TV series btw.

Those 2 are the biggest pieces of crap i've ever seen.
I know i saw a lot of episodes of both Clannad and Kanon 2006. It just didn't appeal to me, i mean, these shows are obviously meant to feed the minds of lonely otakus. The char art doesn't exactly stand out either, that moe crap is so generic, take their hair out and u'll see clones.
I do agree that it has some good background art, but then again other shows do better in that sense(Mushi-shi, NGE and Akira come to mind).
I'd stick to more "real" shows about romance, like .REC or Sola.
Far more interesting, less melodrama.
Some guy turns into paper, now isnt that just cool? xD
As for Air, dunno, never seen it.

What's the point of wanting realism in fiction? Fiction is not supposed to follow all the rules of reality, that's what defines it and makes it entertaining. If I want real life I can turn off the TV and they'd be no need for fictional entertainment, but I don't because it's boring without some escapism. I prefer fiction where the rules are more unpredictable and not set in stone.

Realism isn't quite so jarring. As in, there isn't hackneyed writing that can make all the experience that a character went through and the growth they made suddenly pointless because Phoenix Down dragonballs/lights. Really though, botched ending. It may have worked in the VN after having to replay the same dern game 15 times or whatever, but it doesn't work that way in the anime.
And I would have been fine with the ending if only Ushio would have been brought back. After all, that was what was foreshadowed with the flashback of Akio/Frozen-Nagisa. But hey, who needs foreshadowing when you can just Deus Ex Machina everything back to how it was before and live happily ever after.

Air started out cute and sweet, then quickly took a nosedive. I kept wondering what was going on, and felt very frustrated by the end. Suffice to say, I didn't enjoy it, nor would I watch it again.
Clannad was much, much better. I think I mainly enjoyed this show is because it barely had any melodrama in it. It mostly focused on the characters and developing them in relationship to each other. Nobody was part of a doomed prophecy or victim of some random illness. To sum up, the story just felt more believable to me. The character designs were also very attractive. Oh, one more thing, the story has more comedy in it, which I always like.
Kanon I've never seen, probably won't.
