I can't use the search function right now but I've always wondered if getting that Tekkaman Blade collection is a good choice if I watched Teknoman on UPN. I haven't seen it sense though. Does it even hold up?

As of this writing there's a deal for it at Crunchyroll with 15 hours on the clock.

I started with "Teknoman" on TV way back when just like you and eventually found Tekkaman Blade a few years later via Chinese bootleg (before I actually knew what they were and before it ever got an official subbed release in the States). The bootlegs were god-awful quality in terms of video and subs, but I managed to fill in my own translation based on their very rough ones and still found the series absolutely epic (was so engrossed, that I finished the series in about 5 days).

The series itself has the usual Tatsunoko vibe to it (a sort of dark, dramatic, sci-fi actioner mix), but I was very surprised at how much more I liked this compared to Teknoman, simply because the footage wasn't sped up at certain points, episodes weren't cut, it retained the original score (Kaoru Wada, baby!), it had a great seiyuu cast (Toshiyuki Morikawa, Megumi Hayashibara, and Takehito Koyasu? yes, please) and content wasn't edited out, making for much more cohesive storytelling.

And not only are you getting the entire series uncut, but I believe they also remastered the video for TB, meaning it'll look way better than the masters they used for Teknoman (which I think were straight from the TV archives). So yes, I would definitely recommend you pick it up.

EDIT: Fixed some grammar.

I loved MB's release, it even had some bonus mini OVAs! One of which was animated so gorgeously as to make me almost feel a little ill.

I saw a bit of Teknoman before TB, but wasn't a big fan of the puns during combat. I was also unaware that the changed the soundtrack, and TB's soundtrack was epic, there's no way I would've forgotten a soundtrack that awesome, so it must've been replaced. After the first slow 12 or so eps though, it gets into epic territory.

Teknoman was also somehow 6 episodes shorter than TB. Now, TB did have 4 freakin' recaps, but even if those were cut, doesn't explain the other two.

If you haven't seen Teknoman in ages and mostly just remember it with fondness but nothing too specific, I'd get TB for sure. Though, as a Robotech fan, Macross was even better, made me fall in love all over again. Depending on how much they changed, maybe it'll be like this.

I've only seen Teknoman myself, but supposedly Tekkaman Blade is the same show uncut, with added episodes. Can't really go wrong there unless you hate sub only releases.

The hitch will be finding Tekkaman Blade 2 if you want it.

Or not because Discotek laid claims to it a few months back. Sure, it's not out yet, but probably by the end of the year it should be cheap and plentiful to obtain.
