Was this the series that was at first very unpopular in Japan but then developed a cult hit here in the West thanks to 4chan?

It's certainly a cult hit here -- the first volume is the 10th bestselling item at CD Japan for this year, and the second is in the top 50 -- and the publisher did mention that on the cover of volume 1, but whether that contributed to its overall popularity is unknown. If you google the series in Japanese, though, you'll turn up a bunch of blog posts asking, "WTF America?" |

It's a proven fact. http://kotaku.com/5880409/4chan-used-to-promote-a-japanese-manga-well-sorta The author even acknowledged that the reference was about 4chan when she was asked about it on twitter, although I am too lazy to search for it now; I followed the discussion on twitter early 2012 and read it there myself; Feel free to research it. |

Yeah, on the first printing of the second volume it had some text on the front about the series becoming very popular overseas. And a lot of users on 4chan were either buying it or talking to the mangaka over twitter. |

I am very happy it's getting an anime.
BTW, shouldn't the correct translation in english be "It's not my fault that i'm not popular!" ? |

That's the better translation in terms of sounding good in English while conveying the meaning, but the literal title is, "No Matter How You Look at It, My Lack of Popularity Is Your Fault." |

Heard about this one, I'll give it a look when the anime comes out, perhaps read some of the manga in advance.

So does Japan, actually. One of the covers had something like 海外の大ヒット! (Big hit overseas!) on it, directly alluding to its immense and sudden popularity in the English-speaking world that mostly stems from /a/. |
