Good, good. I hope they don't do much more Macross, except for that next movie, for a while. Having too much of one thing at a time leads to severe burn out, something Gundam has had like 3 times already. A good example of not burning out is VOTOMS. Main show in the 80s, a few sparse OVAs throughout the rest of the 80s and 90s, and regaining popularity gives it a bunch of recent OVAs, but nothing overwhelming like TV series after TV series after movie.

So... it wasn't a compilation movie?

I'll have to check this out eventually then.

Even though... I really hate Alto.

It did compile the series, but it used a lot of new animation. So no, it's not a sequel.

um, I think I just broke something laughing so hard...

like a lot of other series with large casts, the protagonists were kinda secondary to me... Klan was my favorite.

LOL, I guess I was off when I said it I thought it would sell anywhere from 40,000-60,000 BDs in the DVD sales thread. About a third of the animation and far less of the dialogue is re-used, but it's not a compilation movie. It's actually very different from the TV series; it's the first half of a retelling. More like what DYRL was to the original Macross.

So, will this be released in the USA, or has Harmony Gold's fudge-ups pretty much nixed any thought of this coming to the states?

It surprises me that that question is still even asked. Yes, it will come out in the US as soon as I get my LoGH complete non-upscaled blu-ray box set with English subs for $50.

I don't think that there'll be a Macross burnout. They've been pretty good at spacing the various Macross works so far. Macross releases tend to come out in twos, it seems. For as long as I can remember, they've been releasing on OVA series followed not too far behind by a TV series. Then, they tend to go quite a number of years before releasing something new.

The TV series wasn't any good, heard they made changes in the movie so is it any better or just a waste of time just like the TV series was.

Even untranslated I enjoyed the movie a lot. It's definitely not a compilation movie, as others have already mentioned.

If you think Macross Frontier was "a waste of time" then you're not going to like the movie either.

The series was ok at that. Not nearly as good of a story as the original but It did have some potential as the story was similar but the ending was rushed way to fast. Though it did look beautiful. I may check the movie out since it probably condense a lot of the filler in the series but for the most part the plot when no where at all and the ending was very predictable.

Macross burnout? Not happening anytime soon. Theres a Macross boom of sorts at the moment. With the money from the tv series, the events, the movies and the soundtracks (3 times in the oricon top 10 gets you a LOT of CD sales), the franchise is making more money than it had since DYRL came out and you can bet that Satellite wants to keep that going as long as possible. The fandom is this interesting group - not quite ultra niche like most anime but not mainstream either. I mean theres even a Macross F 'dance' (not Sherryls) that theyve come up with - I've seen it at a couple of Macross club nights. The fandom is expanding and I daresay that after the second movie we will see a Frontier OVA at least.
But look at it this way - even if you dont like Frontier, the money goes back into more Macross projects. Without the success of Frontier we wouldnt have gotten the Macross Crossover Live last year or Macross Ace (including the EXCELLENT Macross The First) or the PSP Macross games. I wouldnt be surprised if some of this money goes into another new project for the upcoming 30th anniversary in 2-3 years time.
Popularity is a good thing! And now is the best time to be a Macross fan since the 80's. So much merch and so little money!

What my point is: I don't want a million Macross projects. Too much as once means over-saturation, and even boredom. I'd rather see another TV series in a decade, like normal. I don't want it to be like Gundam with a new series every single year, you run out of ideas and originality. And Macross being a linear timeline doesn't really allow for a million AUs.
