what's the obsession with american movies? not even good ones at that.
is it kind of like how we see japanese movies? but then how come japanese movies never top the box office here?

It's because Hollywood-produced movies generally have the highest production values, are generally the best advertised, and are generally the most crowd-pleasing. American films are what the world generally wants to see above all else. Films from other countries outside the United States will generally be a lot more niche outside their home market (and in some cases, like even Canada excluding Quebec, inside their home market) than American films.
There will always be exceptions, but, if you look at the sum total of film history, American-produced films are the most universally enjoyed.

Agreed. It's worthy of being number one over there. It looks to be having a much better run in Japan than it did here.
Edit: My mistake. Forty-eight million is actually pretty good for this film.

Even if it is a franchise film, I'm looking forward to the new Mamoru Hosoda movie waaaaaaaaay more than Howl's. Nice to see it doing so well.
