I was watching some episode of something today, (what a great starting sentence), and in it a guy drank down an entire glass of an almost certainly non-alcoholic beverage, and upon finishing slammed the glass down and made some loud but nondescript "Ah" refreshed sound. Is this a regular thing in Japan? I'd be quite surprised if it was, and it certainly isn't a regular thing here. If it isn't a common thing that people do in Japan, how is it so popular in anime? I have seen it in more than one series where more than one non-alcoholic beverage has been swallowed whole. It got me thinking about a number of possible things like this that happen regularly in anime that would be weird to see in real life, whether in Japan or not.

I know some things are "just that way" in Japan; for example, the shoe thing apparently takes some adjustment from westerners visiting over there. But it had me thinking that we could have something like a mythbuster thread, where if we see something in a series that doesn't seem quite right but regularly shows up in anime, we can check out if it's just a cultural thing that the Japanese traditionally do, or if it's just something that has developed over time in anime and become something of an anime culture reference in itself, not based on any pre-existing traditions.

Another one I can think of is when a girl grabs a guy's hands and brings them up in between them while talking energetically about something, but in a non-romantic context. I've seen this a lot with girls to other girls too - grabbing both hands and bringing them together while looking right into each other's eyes, but for no real reason.. Doing it in real life would be really weird, but it happens in anime all the time. Is it a characteristic of Japanese conversation or something that's just developed with time through anime? Any ideas as to why it might have developed? I don't have a clue.

These days I have a tendency to kind of blank these little things out as just "one of those things that happens in anime" but really it is kind of weird. Just little things that feel kind of awkward but you don't think about it. So this thread is like the regularly appearing nosebleed question but on a broader scope.

Hey Skylark this is an Awesome topic. I wish I had answers to your questions but I am as curious as you are to find out.

I have one of my own though. The peeling of an Apple for a patient. In most if not all Anime I have seen, when a character is hospitalised they are usually given fruit as a gift. Some get their apples peeled before indulging. I was just wondering where this originated from?

Well I always thought that the non-alcoholic beverage Skylark is referring to was milk. Well I do a similar act after work when I nip to the pub, a nice cold cider is just that refreshing.

I have a question also. What is the whole "indirect kiss" thing about? In the UK, people share drinks and nothing is thought about it. I can imagine it being popular with children up till middle school but sometimes even adults in anime kick up a fuss about sharing drinks as an "indirect kiss". I know the issues for bodily contact are different in Japan but surely that is way too childish.

The "Ah!" after drinking isn't really an anime thing, its just an animation trope, as you can often find it in western animation too.

Wouldn't the most important question be: Who's going to "mythbust" these requests?

How many people do we know who frequent this forum lives in Japan? We'll need many to "bust" cultural references seen in anime that not all of Japan accepts.

I like the idea, though. One freakin' myth I want to see busted is the "being outside for 5 seconds in inclement weather leads to the common cold/flu/excuse to be off for days at a time".

Oh, goodness, do I want this one busted.

I always wondered is the Japenese obsessed with nudity? In some anime that I've watched someone is naked, half naked or going to be naked(strategically placed soda can lol).

I have never been to Japan but I can say that the likelihood of anyone there actually walking around in some of the getup I have seen Anime characters wearing is highly unlikeley. Mores the pity.

As far as being obsessed by nudity I think that's pretty much universal among males. There where a few show with extremely sexualised women in early on when Anime was niche and I Imagine it kinda stuck as a tradition.

Is that a Myth busted now? Is there a Prize? ... or a Badge?

I've seen some of the issues raised here discussed elsewhere by people who could be considered authorities.

As I understand it, this is the Japanese equivalent of an Old Wives Tale (i.e. urban legend for you younger set), so it's not anything peculiar to just anime.

Doing this with non-alcoholic beverages likely is just a parody of anime's long-standing practice of doing this with alcoholic beverages, which is itself a parody of drinking practices that have been around (especially in the West) for probably hundreds of years.

It's not at all uncommon for people to take a drink and say something like 'AH!', especially after hard work or on a hot day. It happens in bars all the time, I even do it myself sometimes. It's an expression of relief from thirst.

Agreed. However, it seems to me anime is the only medium still using it, as though the memo sent by the rest of the planet never made it to Japan.

It's not just the Japanese that do the shoe thing, the Chinese do it also.(note, I'm Chinese)

For a perspective on this topic, I invite you to read this old thread.

Really? I do that all the time with milk; down a half pint or so and let out a short sigh.

I guess myths are things like getting a cold after being in a shower of rain (impossible; it's caused by a virus, not the weather) or getting a nosebleed because you've seen someone naked (also highly unlikely). I suppose they come from old wives tales and stuff.

Media in general has a lot of differences to real life. I mean, for one thing, think how articulate people are in anime, films, books... you almost never get someone mumbling er, um, ah for ages, or talking at the same time as someone else, asking someone to repeat a line they didn't quite catch, not being able to think of the word they want and so on, which all happen pretty frequently in real life.

Same, but not all the time. I don't even know or remember why I started doing it.

Also Was my question about the friut dumb, hard to answer or just ignored? Because I really am curious.

According to anime, every guy in Japan who has a little sister also has a little sister complex. Seriously, no matter how much of a badass a guy is, who'll do his own thing and not give a shit about anyone else, will turn into a sobbing mess if anything ever happens to his precious little sister (or, he'll threaten to kill anyone who would dare to lay a finger on her). It's like, oh, my parents are dead, whatever....but my little sister, too?!?! *angst* (see Shinn from Gundam Seed Destiny for one example).
