Wow! Another record?! Just goes to show that One Piece truly is the most dominant manga series in present time.

It's always funny on gaiaonline when someone tries to argue with me that Naruto is better.
I've been reading it in Shonen Jump and it doesn't really surprise me considering what's going on right now.

only 3.2 million sold?
c'mon, this is one piece..i expected much better.
maybe shueisha didn't print enough copies for every single person in japan to buy one or something.

If they printed 3.1 million and it only sold ~2.2 million. Isn't it a bit much to print even more with the next volume? Is it cheaper to just print more in a single run then to have a second printing?

Yes, it would actually be a bit cheaper to print more in one run than the same amount over two runs due to some of the stuff required. Think of it like printing two runs of the same newspaper at different times, they would have to take the time to set up everything again. That said, it's only 100k more than for vol 58.
@ Kei, not everyone in Japan reads manga, and note they sold around ~2.2mil of the last volume as of July 11th. They'll want to keep shelves stocked with the books but not overstocked or they lose money. Not everyone is able to buy manga as soon as it comes out after all

No kidding.
But the problem is that the US release might not do well no thanks those free scanlation webistes.
Even the anime version is the most ripped and illegaly streamed series (the english dub ) version on the net. theres even still fansubs out there despite an official sub on funi's site. and it's rep is unfortunately sill feeling the afterfects of being massacered by 4kids.
Either way I hope the success over there would mean the same here. but only if both govt start cracking down on these illegal streaming sites and scanlation sites.

exactly, you need extra books stay on shelf but at same time not over-estimate it that you have too many books left.
2.2 out of 3.1 million sold in three weeks is actually pretty good sell-through rate, it is a successful print if you can sell through HALF of the first print run in first week sale. Other top manga series in Japan [750,000 copies sold per volume within first couple of week of its release] ususally got an extra million copies as buffer in between prints and those copies usually WILL SOLD OUT during the fiscal year. OP's first print run has never been lower than 2 million copies since volume 5 and most of the volumes have already had it's 2nd, or even 3rd print.
