I wonder if this means that Tiffany Grant is a lock to return to the role of Asuka in the Rebuild 2.0 English dub.

Personally, I could go either way on Grant's Asuka. The English dub for the TV series doesn't hold up well at all.

It's the Dendy Newtown cinema, not Newton.

I respectfully disagree...for the most part. The early episodes don't hold up well, but that dub is very notable in my mind for being one of the fastest-to-improve dubs I've ever seen. The dub of the first few episodes was one of the worst dubs I've ever seen, but by the time they got to the last episode they were awesome, even more so for "The End of Evangelion," and even more so for the first Rebuild movie.

I attribute most of this to the fact that ADV only got two episodes at a time and therefore only knew so much about the characters they were playing. Once they got a hold of who their characters really were, it was a great dub. That's my opinion, anyway.

This does not necessarily mean that Grant is a lock to play Asuka, though. If FUNimation should pick up the rights, I'm certain she will be considered since she still lives in the area, is still acting, and still considers that role to be her favorite. Then again, that didn't stop FUNimation from casting Jerry Jewell as Kaworu in Eva 1.0 instead of Greg Ayers, who is still voice acting (and oddly enough still in that dub in another role, for some reason).

Then there's the matter of the Japanese having to approve her voice. Rumor has it some of the original cast members auditioned but didn't get their parts back because Anno's studio didn't approve of their auditions.

Putting all THAT aside, there's also the matter of the fact that Eva 2.0 hasn't even been licensed yet. Which sucks, because in my mind that movie doesn't exist until it has been dubbed, and FUNimation gave the first Rebuild movie a top-notch dub.

Still...this will be fun for Grant. She's said several times she considered Asuka her favorite role and that she loves Miyamura's performance. If I were in the area I'd go!

On the other hand...it'll be reeeeeaaaaaallllly awkward if FUNi announces Eva 2.0 soon and she's not in the cast. Especially when she meets Miyamura. "Hi! I played your character in all of her incarnations....I mean, not in the new movie but, ya know it's...yeah..."

I hope she does come back, I really think she did the role justice, especially in the end.

What, are you STUPID???

But seriously, I thought Grant did a great job as Asuka. I still think of the awsome job she did in EoE when Asuka fought the the MP Evas with Bach's Air for Strings in G playing in the background. I'll always associate her voice with Asuka. I really hope she gets to reprise the part because whoever else they got to do it would be a bit of a let down in my book (I feel the same way about Gendo, too).

Yeah, I was a bit disappointed there, too. John Swasey does a reasonably good job, his acting fits the part...but I put Tristan McAvery a notch above him because his acting fit the part *and* his voice fit the part. He reportedly doesn't get along with ADV at all anymore (the only reason he did EoE was because Manga Entertainment got the rights instead of ADV). so I was hoping when FUNimation licensed Eva 1.0, he could be convinced to return.

No. This is more of a "reminder" announcement, these two have been scheduled to appear together for a very long time now. It has no reflection on whether or not Eva 2.0 has been licensed.

QFT; Evangelion is the series that made me a dub-boy, and it very well might not have been if I hadn't switched over from the subbed version several episodes in. I kind-of disagree that Rebuild was better than EoE, though - while the EoE dub was brought down by a couple questionable scripting decisions and some truly terrible supporting roles *ahem-keithburgess-hem*, the lead performances (Spike Spencer, Allison Keith, Amanda Winn Lee, Tristan MacAvery, etc.) and some OTHER scripting decisions (e.g. Shinji's precision F-strike) were just mind-blowingly good. Rebuild was more well-rounded overall, but lacked the high points of the previous dubs as well as the low.

Source? Not that I can't imagine it, but it would certainly be weird for Anno and co. to veto the same voices they approved 15 years ago.
If this is the case, I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that John Swasey's performance as Gendo in Rebuild sounds closer to Fumihiko Tachiki's than Tristan MacAvery's did; the thing is, though, I like MacAvery's performance BETTER than Tachiki's. He lends the character a commanding aura and shade of menace that rocket him into the realm of truly unforgettable anti-villains. spoiler[He handles the character's downfall astonishingly well, too.]

Anyway, on the subject of Tiffany Grant: For better or worse, I'd be truly astonished if she didn't reprise her role. She's worked with Funimation many times, she's available and incredibly willing, and hell, even if Gainax considers nixing it, I'd bet that Miyamura will stick up for her - the two have apparently become friendly.
spoiler[Don't tell anyone though, but if they decide to replace her with, say, Luci Christian, I won't complain.
]

By the way, any opinions on who should voice Mari? My vote is for... Luci Christian. (Yes, I believe Luci Christian to be an actress who cannot be miscast.)

Spike Spencer is horrifically bad and unlikable as Shinji Ikari, and I blame him for a lot of hatred the character gets. He makes Shinji into this exaggerated doofus coward, whereas Megumi Ogata gives him this real humanity that makes him at least understandable and pitiable, not just annoying and whiny. In fact, Japanese Shinji doesn't sound whiny at all, just a weak, awkward, feminine boy.

There is a lot of wooden voice acting, which is the biggest problem in the dub, even from some of the better VAs, who have mostly all improved over time. Like most (if not all) ADV dubs (aside from comedy dubs), it just doesn't hold up to today's standards.

Funimation's dub of Rebuild 1.0 is a lot better, even if I prefer Ritsuko and Kensuke's ADV voices. Even Spencer has improved some over time and has toned Shinji down.

Tiffany Grant, she could be decent at times, but like Spencer, has little if any subtlety in her acting. It's true that Asuka herself is a bit over-the-top, but not all the time, and Grant's was all the time. Perhaps like Spencer she will have improved over time and will be better in the Rebuild 2.0 dub.

I attribute that more so to the fact that Shinji was voiced with a post-pubescent voice in the dub rather than a pre-pubescent voice. Just a theory, of course, but here it is. I think if you hear a child-like voice in Shinji's situation, you're more likely to think of him in terms of a child, so your immediate reaction is, "Aww, poor kid..." Whereas if he has a post-pubescent voice like that of a teenager, you're more likely to think of the character in terms of an adult, and your immediate reaction is more akin to, "Oh, dude, just grow a pair already!" That bothered me at first, too, and in truth I do like Ogata's Shinji a little bit more. I would definitely stop short of saying that Spencer was horrifically bad and unlikeable, though. I'd stop waaaaay short of that. He, like the rest of the cast in my opinion, got a lot better over time at showing the subtleties of the character. Both actors play the character wonderfully, I only give Ogata the edge because it's easier for me to sympathize with a child-like voice than it is with a more teenage voice.

The source is a rumor, and I can't remember where I first read it. It's only meant to be taken with a grain of salt, but it was based on the fact that when ADR Director Mike McFarland announced the dub cast for Eva 1.0, he prefaced his announcement with, "First off, before I announce this, I want to make sure I tell everybody, we didn't forget the original cast. Every single original cast member was contacted, attempted to be contacted, considered...we went all-out."

Again, this. I thought Spencer did an amazing job as Shinji, and I thought he imbued the character with just a hint of rage and resentment, which lent him a lot of credibility and really played into his development over the course of the series. Shinji is really meant to be a paragon of teen angst and depression, and he struggles with questions of masculinity, and issues that are specifically masculine in nature, so to me it only makes sense that he should be played by a man. I think it makes him more believable - for better or worse - as a specifically TEENAGE character. And as has been mentioned numerous times, over the course of the series he migrated significantly from caricaturing Shinji's depression to playing it with startling nuance. You can argue that he was miscast (obviously, I disagree), but not that he didn't do the best he could with what he had. Again, I actually liked his performance in Rebuild a little bit less than in EoE, because it felt like he was toning down some of the unique things he brought to the character.

Somewhere on the Internet Grant's performance as Asuka is described as a "screeching harpy"; I more or less agree, and I think there is an argument to be made both for and against that. Her performance is loud, obnoxious and overbearing, but so is the character, and that is presumably the point. I actually think she did better in Asuka's mellower moments than in those that begged for scenery-chewing. I'd be kind of interested to see how she approaches the role after, what, six years away from it? She certainly hasn't stopped thinking about it.
Honestly, Grant has kind of reached a status similar to that of Vic Mignogna and David Hayter; she is so enthusiastic about, and is identified so intimately with the role that the quality of her actual performance is almost secondary.

As for the dub overall, there is indeed some wooden acting, which causes the product as a whole to show its age, but I recall very, very little of that being from the main cast. In fact, their performances not only hold up, but remain some of the best character acting in the history of anime dubbing. In my opinion.
