Thankfully, so far, I have not had a direct experience with being banned at ANN. *knocks wood* However, I am curious about something: if you are banned, does that mean that you just can't post, or does it also mean that you cannot access the My Anime / My Manga lists that are associated with the banned nic? If the banning prevents you from logging in with the banned nic, presumably this means you can't access the associated lists.

I am curious as to why you are curious; it seems a rather morbid topic.
The answer to your question is that it depends on the ban. There appear to be three levels*: temporary (where you can still log in and change your MyAnime list, but you cannot post in the forums; I dunno about Private Messaging) permanent (you can never log in to your account again; you may still read the news and look at the forums though) IP (like a permanent ban, only you are blocked from the entire website unless you use a different IP address than the one you got banned on) * Although, if you were to submit pictures of child pornography here you might attain the mystical fourth "Über" level, that of being banned from the Internet altogether (i.e. ANN calls the Feds who haul your sorry arse off to jail). |

Thanks, dtm42, I appreciate the info. I've actually always been curious and meant to ask the question but never got around to it. I suppose the issue creeped back up into my mind because I was recently warned by an admin to dial it back (in terms of disrespectful/impolite posts) or face a temporary ban. (The warning was entirely merited, by the way.)
Not being able to post would be a drag, but not being able to update my Anime and Manga Lists would actually hurt me worse, if you can believe it. Ergo my curiosity about what a ban actually entailed. My intent is to never find out first-hand. |
