When buying an anime do you tend to go for the cheap, wack cover, no extra sets (S.A.V.E., Anime Legends) or go for the fancy artboxes, extras, etc?
I tend to go for the series with artboxes and such over the really wonky cheaper editions. I finally got Gankutsuou in the mail and I paid five dollars extra for the fancier edition that comes with small posters, awesome artbox, and interview with the director. There's something about those S.A.V.E editions that piss me off. Why does it have to say SAVE all over it? Is FUNImation trying to remind us we're cheap bastards?

For me, one of the big draws of owning DVDs (besides supporting the industry) is the inclusion of extras, especially commentaries. I honestly don't understand why there aren't more commentaries on anime DVDs, they're good fun to listen to if not always particularly informative.
I don't care what the packaging looks like, as long as I gets me my extra content. And I am a cheap bastard, and proud of it!

Artbox. Because I'm worth it. And because I like my Anime to be in safe and pleasing boxes when sitting on my shelf. When Gundam SEED came out I bought the individual volumes without a box. Then a year or so later I paid NZ$40 just to buy the box plus volume 1 (which of course I already had), just so that I'd have a box to put my DVDs in for that series.
In New Zealand we are rarely offered "thinpacks" and what have you, so there is usually only the nice box or nothing. If you have the money then it's really a no-brainer; get the artbox.

I don't think I've made it any secret that I'm obsessed with singles and art boxes. To me, anime is about more than the show; it's about the show, the bargain hunting, and the look. The look is probably the most important. And thanks to my bargain hunting skills, I can usually get single + box for less than their cheaper box set counterparts since they typically go down in price. For example, I just got all 13 volumes including the two boxes of Kodocha for $5 less than the S.A.V.E. editions.
However, I'm not afraid to spend money on quality. The $250 I dropped for the Sakura Book is proof of that (even though that's technically still a great deal). Sure, I could've gotten the whole show for about that much via singles, but I like the books better and am more than willing to get them. I also have 4 art box imports planned for shows where we didn't get one or ones I didn't like in the case of Scrapped Princess.
I'm actually a little sad that a lot new fans are cheap bastards. They're the reasons I can't the awesome singles and boxes anymore . CHEAP FAST CHEAP FAST CHEAP FAST blah blah blah and then they have the balls to complain when a release is of poor quality. I literally facepalm when someone complains over DVD or packaging quality.

I tend to go with the cheaper brick sets rather than the art boxes. It's simply because I don't have to much money so I usually dont have an option. But that's not to say that I never get the nicer art boxes. I'd say about 30-40% of my anime dvds are art boxes or limited edition sets. The rest tend to be the cheaper box sets like anime legends (which I love). Though I do have to say that I haven't bought a single S.A.V.E edition dvd yet. Which is odd, I thought I would have by now but looking at my collection I don't see a single one of them.
Also I have to say that I'm not a fan of singles. The only time I'll bother with them is when I'm getting the art box, otherwise I find them to be really pointless. And if I do ever buy them I wait until the cheaper box sets come out so the prices drop like a rock.
P.S. I also recently bought the old Geneon art box for Gankutsuou and I love it. This is easily one of the best art boxes I've seen. It looks really good and the extras are really cool. Plus when I bought it at a convention they were selling it for the same price as the Funimation release of it.

I just ordered Gankutsuo and you guys are making me really excited to see it up close. I've seen it on people's shelves and it looks gorgeous. I might have my expectations really high, but it looks like it could give Air TV a run for it's money as best art box.

No difference to me. As long as there's something to hold the singles together I couldn't care less. But I think it's really annoying to have a complete series without a box, like Chevalier D'Eon which apparently never had a boxed release over here. So, I'm currently not sure whether I should import R1's art box, or just throw the cases away and keep the discs like I used to do.
After all I prefer releases like Anime Legends (7 discs packed in a single case), followed by art boxes, followed by whatever metal case they're going for (definitely the most annoying).

Well, by "just" I meant the other day.
However, there have been times where a cool box has solidified a purchase. 009-1's tin box, My-Hime, Ai Yori Aoshi, Desert Punk, and Tenjho Tenge can thank their cool boxes for their purchases.

Either thin DVDs in Cardboard cases, or in those cases that can hold multiple discs. All of this "green" environmentally friendly bio disposable cheap paper FUNi does their sets in can just bug off.
As most of the anime I buy are movies or OVAs, a single normal DVD case is fine.

Either one, whichever is cheaper. Except if the Funi SAVE set says "SAVE" all over the green thing on the spine. SAVE is in bigger letter than the titles of the show. Greaaaat. I don't mind the stickers on the outside though. If I do decide to try out Big Windup and decide to keep it, I'd probably find an alternate cover somewhere and put it over the SAVE one so it looks less ugly.
I used to be all about cheap until I discovered TRSI, which let me get some artbox+singles for dirt cheap. I was all over that until I ran out of room. Now it's whatever's cheaper once more and if it's the artbox+singles then I'll MAKE room! I actually saved some room recently by replacing loose singles with 6 disc DVD cases that took up far less room.

Lately my anime purchases have focused on artbox sets. I'm kind of a nerd about art anyway and I usually like the art and designs of the various boxes, even if I sometimes have to pay a bit more for them. They also appear to be a rapidly dying breed, which has motivated me to get them while I can.
My latest focus has been on the Mushi-Shi artbox: I just like the design, for some reason. Not especially easy to find at the moment, but I will perservere.
Two current favorites in my collection are xxxHolic and Hell Girl season 1. I like the clean design and art on the xxxHolic box and the Hell Girl art is awsome.

I'm the rare fan that loves all the LE editions that come with tons and tons of extra stuff and I love regular artboxes as well. Plus, by now the shows I want artboxes for have had thinpacks come out so I can snag the singles dirt cheap at TRSI (and a lot of times it comes out pretty close to the complete box set price too). Sure I will buy thinpacks and such (ugh, my Moribito Walmart pack but it was such a good price) but I really prefer not to (and I am getting that artbox for Moribito since I had the Walmart packaging so much).

Artbox.
I've made myself a rule: Whenever I buy anime, I always buy the most premium and expensive edition available. Because I might think, "Man, I wish I'd gotten the better version..." and end up double dipping. However, I'm never going to say, "Man, I wish I'd gotten the worse version..." and *double dip* for it.
Also, I only buy shows I like, and if I like a show, I want to get a nice release for it. It's sort of like that saying "Anything worth doing is worth doing well."

Unlike some people (I'm looking at you, KoH ), I wouldn't buy a series I wasn't already committed to buying solely due to interesting packaging. I will admit though, if I like a series I'm willing to pay a bit more for an artbox as opposed to those "let's-cram-3-or-more-DVDs-in-a-clamshell" sets (S.A.V.E., liteboxes, whatever they're called in their various incarnations). I was actually slightly disappointed when I ordered the Gakuen Heaven litebox and it was just a single case with 3 DVDs-- I know I should've researched it but I was expecting, well, a literal box of some sort. While I don't really plan on buying it again in a box version, I probably would if I found the right deal. And I'm now aware of the different types of "box" sets available as I shop around online for Loveless, for example. I really do think the artboxes, whether they hold singles or slimline cases, have a nice, sharp, "full" look that the clamshells lack. But I can totally understand why people go for the cheaper, more compact versions, especially if money or (more likely) shelf space is an issue.
