S.A. is definitely one of those series which lacks in the originality department and isn't necessarily all that good but is a lot of fun anyway. I thoroughly enjoyed it and am quite glad to have bought it. However, this is no question that it's far from the best or most original anime out there. I think that the review was pretty much spot on.

For anyone who is wondering, yes the story does actually end here.

Lest anyone be confused, the anime's story ends there. The manga story continues and has interesting developments and characters that are barely hinted at in the anime. With that caveat in mind, I think the review pretty much sums the series quite nicely.

So following that caveat, would you say the manga is better than the anime? I've seen a few episodes of the anime, but found it a bit too generic comedy for my tastes (although still interesting enough to rent one of these days.) I've considered picking up the manga a few times, but didn't want to risk it if it felt like more of the same.

I would say that the manga is better than the anime & not just because it goes farther than the anime. Overall, the manga is better even in the parts the anime covered. For example, Hikari isn't as dense in the manga as she is in the anime for instance. Admittedly, she still has a blind spot for understanding that Kei likes her. But when it comes to personal relationships other than her own, she's quite insightful. All of the other characters have more depth in the manga as well. I will warn you that the first volume (nicknamed the challenges arc) can be a bit of a slog, but once past those initial chapters, the story and characters become more engaging.

Thanks very much for the insight, LKK. Once I get caught up on my current Viz manga releases, I'll start going after S.A. as well. I think I'll read it before I dive into the anime.

Well, sadly, if you're unwilling to buy anime without a dub, you're going to miss out on stuff. Personally, I much prefer dubbed anime, but there's plenty of stuff out there which doesn't get dubbed which I don't want to miss out on. And this anime is one of them.

I enjoyed this a lot more than I expected. I actually blind bought the first half, and enjoyed enough to pick up the second half at the reasonable price offered.

Kind of a weird mix of Ouran Host Club and School Rumble.

Good and accurate review, but I would add one thing.

One other spark of originality that showed up was when Kei was helping Hikari say his first name. It highlights a bit of what Hikari actually is as opposed to how she is portrayed most of the time. In spite being seen mostly as a frustrated "Ms. Second Place" that is alternately ditzy and dense, she is in fact a very strong #2 in a very elite field. Those questions he threw at her couldn't have been answered by just anyone.

She also is bright enough to figure out why she had such a hard time saying "Kei" in the first place. That was a good touch.

The whole story would have been much better if they had focused on more meaningful competitions between Kei and Hikari. They always took the obvious choices of who wins and Kei never even breaks a sweat. The end result is that the secondary character's stories end up looking more interesting, such as Megumi or Akira. Oh, well, on to the next anime.
