Saw there was a topic like this on the Anime side, but not one for the Manga side.
So, I've decded to MAKE one for the manga area.

Any animes that had terrible endings or didn t end the way you would have liked?

I have to step right up and say Chibi Vampire/Karin.

Oh my god, it was a kinda happy ending, but Jesus Christ if it didn't depress me.

the bad outshines the good. its a VERY bitter-sweet ending.

spoiler[Karin loses her blood producing ability, and thus is now just like a Human, so her family decides to let her live her life with Usui, and therefore, erase her memories of her entire family. she now thinks she never had one, although at certain points, she cries and doesnt know why, (because her heart remembers although her memories of it may be gone)

Eventually she had a daughter with Usui, and we see that Anju is watching over her.]

So yeah. The very ending ending part was happy, but the events that happen between Karin, usui and her family are so damn depresing. I was actually depressed for a short while after. Anime hyper

So yeah. what about you guys?

Flock of Angels immediately comes to my mind. spoiler[For a majority of the 3 volume series, the author built up Aema and Shea's relationship only to have Aema die in the end and have Shea marry his best friend so they could raise his and Aema's child together]. It was really abrupt and out of left field.

Marmalade Boy, ended too abruptly for my tastes also. From what I remember, spoiler[the main characters found out they weren't related in the end and all was well and that was it]. The ending just felt like a total let-down for a series that I was totally invested in :/

Oh, where do I start?

I loved Fruits Basket--when I first started reading it. Then the series took a left turn by focusing on Akito and all of Akito's relationships, in an attempt to humanize the "bad guy"...which just didn't quite work, IMHO. The volumes were stretched out by filler (I didn't like Tohru's mom's back story that much) while some major characters and plot threads, including hinted relationships, are left to dangle. Finally, the "explanation" of the curse was kind of vague and wholly unsatisfying--excuse me for imagining up a "deal with the devil" scenario, or any other explanation that would have explained how on earth the Sohma family, and only the Sohma family, was left both literally cursed and figuratively "blessed" by inexplicable amounts of money and power.

The final chapter was adorable, sweet and romantic, but it didn't make up for all the plot wholes and weird turns in the middle and towards the end of the story.

How's that for a spoiler-free manga ending commentary? Wink

One comes immediately into mind:

Strawberry 100%.

Why?

(Read at your own risk, by the way - MAJOR spoiler.)

spoiler[They set up Aya to be the girl destined to be with Junpei for pretty the whole course of this title, only to have him end up with Tsukasa instead.

Now I must admit two things:

Despite me liking Aya more than Tsukasa, it was NOT an 'all-of-a-sudden' turn of events. This was indeed built up over the span of dozens of chapters, to my memory. (It's been 2-3 years since I've read the title.)

Also, I must say that Tsukasa definitely deserved it. She and Junpei fit pretty well with each other around that turning point.

Even so, I was saddened. VERY saddened. Aya was my favourite from scene one, so I really felt bad for Aya. You always kinda knew that she liked him and Junpei liked her, but their fear of admitting it to each other would ultimately prove to be the downfall of that potential relationship.]

Man, reminiscing about my experiences Strawberry 100% always gives me a kick. I really do need to pick up those earlier volumes soon.

Fruits Basket – It would be better if the story focused more on the older characters: Akito, Shigure, Ayame and Hatori, instead of boring couples like Tohru&Kyo and Machi&Yuki. I wish the author had got rid of Tohru, Kisa and Machi. I wouldn’t mind if there were more about non-romantic relationships among older characters, for example Ayame, Hatori and Shigure. I also don’t like how some relationships feel rushed, forced and artificial.

Tsubasa Chroniclespoiler[I wish all Sakuras and Syaorans were dead. I don’t like that Watanuki is another substitute of Syaoran.] I dislike everything that happens in Clow arc. There is nothing interesting there apart from sparse information on Yuuko and Clow.

Hot Gimmick. D:

spoiler[Hatsumi ends up with Ryoki even though he treats her like dirt through the entire series. And when Hatsumi turns down Shinogu's romantic confession... he runs off and becomes a monk.]

So frustrating and unsatisfying. I hate doormat heroines.

Hot Gimmick had almost no chance of a satisfying ending, spoiler[unless you just loved Ryoki I suppose.] At-least I got panties out of it! Very Happy I hope that doesn't count as a spoiler.

The light Novel, Hot Gimmick S, is an acceptable substitute, but...for so much buildup and a triangle of boy choices, with a ditzy heroine, I can certainly agree that I wished for a better ending.

I have a few in my repertoire that wanted for a better ending, but I'll be brief.

Hana-Kimi. I've mentioned this before, but it bears repeating to me. Twenty Three manga and....spoiler[I get a hug. A HUG. THE END. It was Tenshi Ja Nai all over again, except three times as much build up!] Maybe I'm greedy. Yeah, I totally am.
In general, romances that just kind of...stop, with them just being happy and lalala. I'm not certain what I prefer, but after going through so much and for their world to just end at a freeze frame of smiles? At-least Beauty Pop spoiler[gave me that super silly glimpse of their family life together. It just made me happy to know it didn't end at some point.]
The rest of my complaints are pretty much the same, and other then these moments I'm usually content with whatever ending they give me.

For me it would be Welcome to the NHK. Not to say, it was bad but I lost plot after several chapters.

The anime ending was more emotional for me.

Bitter Virgin: I was fine with how it was going until the ending.spoiler[The psycho bitch says they wont last and the other girl agrees with her. After all the crap Aikawa and Suwa went through I think they deserved a happy and romantic ending. Basically if trouble comes along they wont fight for their love. ]

Peach Girl: It was your typical melodramatic shoujo with a love triangle and bullies. I was fine with this. At the time anyway. From volume 15 on it turns into a huge stinky pile of soap opera dramatic crap and Kairi torture. As if it couldnt get worse! It does! The only character I like in this story is Kairi. This is the comic that caused me to avoid love triangle harem mangas. This and Hana Yori Dango.

Crazy For You: The main character pissed me off. She should have moved on. spoiler[She stuck by Yuki's side. It felt like she was number 2. The back up girl. She chased him all the way to the end until she got him after the other girl dumped him. ]

Absolute Boyfriend:
spoiler[Pointless tragedy so the pussy who was afraid to make a move can get the girl. Oh well. At least mr. robot got to bang her first. ]

Series that are not finished yet that I'm likely to hate the ending to:
Bokura Ga Ita, GE-Good Ending, Vampire Knight

@Aylinn: Machi should never have been thrown inyo the fray. That character did nothing for the story except allow Yuki a "safe" character to hook up with, so that fangirls wouldn't mourn the aborted possibility of Yuki/Tohru since Tohru was *obviously* destined for Kyo. And Heaven Forbid Yuki end up alone! Oh, no, every character simply must end up with a proper heterosexual partner!

Except Momiji, who's life is destined to be sad as he teaches everyone how to suffer trauma like familial abandonment with a smile! I mean, it's not like people can be scarred for life by WATCHING THEIR PARENTS *CHOOSE* to REJECT THEM as a young child! No way! Just smile and go on with life!

Oh, and talking about hooking up, weren't we hinted at the possibility of a mature, fully developed relationship between adult characters Hatori and a high school teacher? What happened there exactly? Guess we'll never know. Maybe Machi's "development" was more important than a real, mature relationship between two adult characters...

What was your beef with Kisa, though?

@PinkWings: spoiler[ The girl has sex with the robot?! What?! Damn!]
I couldn't hate Absolute Boyfriend more! What a great message it has:

"Hey, teenage girls! Remember that the only way to make your boyfriend love you and keep him with you is to have sex with him! *Especially* if he's pressuring you and you don't feel ready yet! Your boyfriend's wants and needs always come before yours, otherwise he'll hook up with another chick that's willing to satisfy his normal carnal male needs! Wink!"

I dropped the series early on, but I did catch the last couple of chapters in Shojo Beat, and, yeah, the ending sucked. I'm glad Watase's doing Shonen now. Good luck trying to portray irresponsible teenage sex in the pages of Shonen Sunday! I don't think Kagome and Inuyasha kissed spoiler[even after they got married!]

I sure hope teen girls are reading Sand Chronicals and Nana in which the emotional and pratical consequences of teen and unprotected sex are fully explored...

No, wait...according to the NYT's best selling manga list, all the girls are reading "Vampire Knight." Squicky incestual vampire romance! "Remember girls, if you *really* love him, you'll let him suck your blood! This important message has been brought to you by the authors of "Twilight", "Vampire Knight" and "Black Bird"! Keep Reading for more great boyfriend advice Wink!"

My thoughts exactly.

Yeah it is hinted that Hatori dates this high school teacher that is a friend of Kana, but there isn’t a lot of them, which is a pity. I would rather read about them than Yuki&Machi and the whole student council.

She is cute, but in a way that is somehow annoying to me. I feel her cuteness is overdone. I guess the way her curtness is presented doesn’t work for me.

Did anyone believe that it could end in another way?

For me the most disappointing ending was Inuyasha.

spoiler[Why did she have to leave everything? What did he have to leave in the past? But on the other hand Rin and Ses part was finished sensibly: I was scared that they could end up together. Say what you want, but I hate when he is much older and raises her to become his wife. it's better for Rin that she come back to human's world ]

I agree with most of the responses to Hot Gimmick. I just finished it today and my expression was, literally, the following:

Oh wow I have to argee with you so much! With Hana Kimi, I reached the end and felt completely disappointed. After all that time there should have been a better ending. I felt the same with Happy Hustle High. spoiler[The series started out so great with a strong-willed heroine then it ended with her have *gasp* sex for the first time. This also signified her "serious" relationship and girly-girly side.] Thank god the series was only 5 vol long because I would have mad been if I spent more on it.

To throw out another one, Mugen Spiral. spoiler[The real problem here was it was only two volumes long hardly any room for a decent ending. Especially since the premise was set up to feel like a longer work. It ended far too suddenly.]

Lastly, Demon Ororon because spoiler[I was left wondering about Chikai's godhood and who was in charge in of hell. Okay so Ororon died THE END! Seriously that was messed up.]
