I had no idea there was a manga that pre-dated the anime (face it, an increasing number of popular anime these days are original stories).
How is this one in comparison to the anime? Does it include stuff not in the anime or continue the story after Second Barrage's end?

Ironically, I still have yet to find time to watch the anime myself.
But from what I hear, essentially they are the same, with the manga obviously being a bit more gory and approaching certain scenes harder such as Revy killing all the unarmed hired help cowering on the Nazi ship, From the episode listings I have seen the story arcs are in slightly different order and I am guessing they probably don't show Revy topless as much as they do in the manga.
As for whether it goes past, the ending of the second season, it does, but it is a pretty big story arc (and I think unfinished), which I think they are probably going to use in the previously announced third season. Either way, I'd say give it a shot, its a great read.

I've watched and read all of what's available here in the US regarding Black Lagoon. The anime's timeline is slightly different from that of the manga (for example, Greenback Jane occurs after the Tokyo arc in the manga) but largely they are quite similar. There are some minor differences here and there, enough to make the two feel *slightly* different.
I do prefer the english dub of the anime to the text of the manga, though.
And the manga does indeed go beyond the second barrage. Just one story arc, but it is the longest by far in Black Lagoon.

With a third season of BL being made though it will more than likely catch up with the manga and cover the Roberta going nuts arc as I like to call it. All in all I think they're on equal footing. The anime is one of the rare cases where the series follows the manga rather closely. As stated there are some minor differences, and one or two switch ups in terms of which arc follows which, but all in all the anime is a very good adaptation. Add in the fact that the anime has one of the best English dubs in the past several years really makes it harder to put one over the other. My opinion is if you like one version you'll like the other more than likely and should check it out. To me the anime actually enhances the characters from the manga and adds more depth to them. Not too often does this happen IMO.
