Wow, if it launched that cheap, no wonder it's so successful.
They REALLY underestimated the demand for this game, I feel. |

I think Japanese companies underestimate the demand for great RPG's in general in the States.

I guess it helps that they didn't have any spend any money working on a localization.

It launched at 50 bucks as a collector's edition, they just this week lowered the price to 30 for the standard edition. But like all 3 rainfall games this was an excellent game. I honestly think their is an unjustified, maybe subconscious backlash directed at Hironobu Sakaguchi. After leaving his creation aka FF, he made Mystwalker. FIrst game was blue dragon and extremely fun game to play coupled with art style of Akira Toriyama aka Dragon Quest and Dragon Ball. It was deemed average at best. Then he made Lost Odyssey, which I think on story, character, and soundtrack alone is a masterpiece. It was considered good but subpar to pretty much ever FPS ever made because of standard gameplay, because clearly rpgs cant have turn based and be good, but fps well they get passes for still having the same gameplays since the 80s. And then last story went to the wii and kind of died a quite death.
Honestly, I dont know why but the ps3 was the only console he never supported and thats the most jrpg friendly system. |

I honestly think a WHOLE lot of the problem there is with the fact that, well, both of those titles were 360-exclusive - and neither Japan nor the Western JRPG fans really care for that console, like, at all - so a lot of the "response" to those games were for either the people who were bitter about having to buy a 360 for those games, or from the people who already owned a 360 - e.g., mostly shootan gaem kydz - an audience that the games were ABSOLUTELY NOT meant for. So yeah, I do feel that a lot of it is unjustified. But I also feel that they don't even come close to living up to the legacy of Final Fantasy. Honestly, I don't even think that The Last Story really does. But he's dealing with an extremely small development team and an extremely small pool of resources, and yeah, he has all the creative flexibility in the world, but it's hard to do much in today's market without the financial backing of a powerhouse like Square Enix to begin with.
I was really hoping that they would start focusing more on portable titles, and when ASH came out I thought that was going to be the case, but then they turned around and made TLS, and I hope they haven't burned themselves out of funds again with it... And the main reason that he didn't give much thought to the PS3 was because Microsoft actually funded them to create exclusive titles to help them penetrate the Japanese market (which they were - and still are - having EXTREME difficulties getting into), but I'd say it also had a lot to do with their lack of resources - they simply couldn't have afforded to develop for the PS3 with them. |

Now I hope they learned their lesson and start bring over more underexposed Wii JRPGs

Probably a big part of it. I know I just watched the Blue Dragon anime rather than play the game since I have no interest in a 360. Though I guess the anime wasn't too much like the game I hear. |

As usual, the game is better. |

Bouquet was the best character in the anime, and she was anime-only. Not sure how a Bouquet-less game could be better..

I was one of those people that bought a 360 because of Mistwalker. I really wished there was a proper sequel to Blue Dragon because the gameplay and writing was definitely something that could be expanded/improved upon. Same with Lost Odyssey. The DS sequel didn't really jive well with me. Not a fan of the RTS style of gameplay and the downgrade in graphics was a tad disappointing even if it was running on a DS. I didn't get a chance to play the other sequel, but at that point, I didn't really care much for the titles.
The Last Story was, well, the Wii's swansong and Mistwalker's best developed game at that point. Because the resources weren't focused too much of the graphics, the gameplay really shined and brought in some new ideas. I'm hoping Nintendo works with Mistwalker in the future to bring in more titles, but with Nintendo's financial backing from the start. From what I recall, The Last Story had gone through two outsourced development teams, AQ Interactive and Nintendo's EAD team. |

One thing I don't understand though, how come the Blue Dragon sequel appear on DS when Microsoft has that series trademarked. You can see Blue Dragon name on the trademark, that mean it belongs to Microsoft and will not see on other consoles other then Microsoft console. I find that weird the first Blue Dragon (which is trademark by MS) on Xbox 360, and the sequel is on the DS which is a Nintendo console. That's why I find it weird, it would be like Microsoft making a Halo spin-off/sidestory and put it on PSVita instead of 360, or Sony making Uncharted game for 360. Oh and before somebody come in and say "well Mass Effect 1 was published by MS, and now it's on PS3", yeah Microsoft never owned Mass Effect (nor they trademark it, if you look at their trademark on their website), I could say the same for Gears of War, despite it being published by MS, they don't own it, Epic Games own the Gears IP. Because of that, there has been talk about Gears could end up appearing on PS3 (and hopefully the Wii U) in the future. |

I got the game on launch day, with the artbook and sound track. However, because my Wii was unable to read duel-layered games I was unable to play this game (and it would of cost $75 to fix it). Now that I got my Wii U, I've been playing this game and it's incredible. I still have Xenoblade to play too after I finish The Last Story.
