I've just bought a Vita, and I liked Atelier Annie (DS) and Mana Khemia (PSP), so I hope this game will get translated too.
What's up with those ridiculous clothes though? You'd expect an alchemist to wear a lab coat or something sturdy for field work, not a bikini or frilly mini-dress.

Its fanservice. Same reason why you're not playing some old man or whoever would normally be an alchemist.

In Atelier Rorona, Astrid managed to convince her apprentice Rorona that such clothing was appropriate for an alchemist, even though Astrid wears much more sensible clothing. Astrid found this amusing. (Astrid toys with Rorona in other ways as well.) In Atelier Totori, Rorona has been passing on her alchemy skills to Totori, including these ideas on clothing.

Yeah .. basically Astrid is a pervert who spends her time sleeping or making inappropriate suggestions to Rorona. Anyway, personally I think they look cool. It's not like you see panty shots or anything.

Well, others already gave explanations for her standard outfit. The Vita version of the game has bikinis and maid outfits as pre-order DLC. Those outfits were not in the original game and Astrid has nothing to do with them, its pure fanservice.
