Inspired by errinundra's* explanation of his strict rating system, I want to know: what is your rating system? Do you have strict rules or are they more like guidelines? No rules at all? Do you allow yourself to change ranks? Do you try to keep a certain ratio of the different ratings? Do you ever break your rules, or have exceptions? Also, I've seen some people leave some titles unrated. Why? Just to clarify, this isn't about how you judge the quality of a show to rank it.

*which I currently can't locate Crying or Very sad

I don't have many rating rules, but I stick to them religiously. Concerning the amount of titles in each rank, I'm pretty relaxed. My only rule about that is that the ranks of 'Good' and above must have more titles than the rank above it. That is to say the # of titles in Masterpiece<Excellent<Very Good<Good. This has been extremely easy to stick to, as the last time I had to tweak a rating to stay within this rule was back when I only had 100 titles in my Seen All category.

I do however have some strict rules regarding changing a title's rank.
-After I've finished a show, I give my first impression rating. I have a week to think on it and change it.
-Any rating can only go up or down by 1 rank.
-If I'm thinking of changing a rank of a series that I haven't seen recently, I don't allow myself to change it until I rewatch it.
-If I rate something as a Masterpiece, it never gets changed. Conversely, If I don't rate something a Masterpiece from the start, it never can be upgraded to Masterpiece status.

I don't often change rankings. Almost always my first impression rating sticks, though I did do some re-rating a while ago of titles I saw when I first became an anime fan, back when I gave any halfway-decent title a Very Good rank.

Thanks! I couldn't remember what thread it was from (thought it was somewhere in the What Are You Watching Right Now thread, no wonder I couldn't find it).

My rules are more loose than yours, but here they are:

  1. Come up with the rating before seeing how others have rated it. I strive to not allow my rating choice to be influenced by the majority. For example: if I were to see something ranked as X, I'd be subconsciously more inclined to rate it as such over X-1 or X+1, which I may have otherwise chosen.
  2. I don't change ranks of really old things I've watched. If they were long before I joined here and I rated them in retrospect: my opinion now isn't any more valid than then.
  3. I will change ranks on things, but I try to do so on solid reasons and after enough time has passed that I can weigh the negatives/positives more accurately. If the negatives outshine the positives in retrospect: it probably wasn't that great.
  4. I will change ranks as my standards change. This is almost always in a negative direction, but usually by no more than a rank or two.
  5. If I've deemed it a masterpiece, I have a few days to change my mind.
  6. This is probably expected, but I have to consciously keep it in perspective: try to rate it on its entirety, not just the beginning or the good points. No. 6 and Fractale are examples of this: they started very good and then became... less good. I had to average it out and include a heavier weight for how it ended and the result was "Decent" and "Good" respectively.

There's probably some other rules that guide what I do that I don't notice.

I do not rate the work. I rate the experience I've had - how unique, how emotionally satisfying, how interesting and immersive the story was. The so-called plot holes and character inconsistencies often enough don't affect the mark at all if the work has done other things that I consider more important very well. I often reevaluate the work after some time to see if the experience hasn't held up in the long run. The results are of course very arbitrary.

I only rate those shows that I have actually finished (so even though I just love Robotech, I will not be rating it anytime soon); so when I approach the end of a show, I invariably have a temporary rating of 9/11 -- very good -- in mind. Then I bump it up or down; it depends upon how I feel about the show. Good music and/or animation invariably has me bumping it up a notch or two.

I don't have a hard rating system, but it is something I've thought about. I do know that many of my current ratings are higher than they actually should be; I did almost all of them at once and wasn't really thinking hard about each one, so I ended up being very forgiving. I'll probably revisit it at some point.

My rating system is based on two general aspects: objective and subjective.

When it comes to objective rating, I look at stuff like quality of animation, sound, et cetera: things that I think can be examined objectively.

Subjective rating is mainly about: did I like it, and how much did I like it. Sometimes I have specific reasons that I can point to (and which can sometimes be viewed objectively) but usually it's about my personal feelings.

The amount of weight I give each aspect varies for each show, and is mainly a function of how strongly that aspect comes out in a show. Trigun, for example, is not, objectively, among the best anime out there. But, I really like Trigun. I like its characters, it's plot, and its general ambiance. I like how it makes me feel. So, on a subjective level it is very strong, and I've rated it a Masterpiece.

Another aspect which I use is: how well does the anime do what it is trying to do: if it is aiming for humor, is it funny? If it is aiming for action: does it deliver on spectacle? If romance, does it tug on the heart-strings? That sort of thing. I will give a better rating on a show that does what it is trying to do.

I don't rate something unless I feel I've seen enough of it to form an opinion. I can rate it even if I haven't seen all of it because there's a category of "seen some".

Sometimes I will quit a series because either it turned out to be horrible, it stopped interesting me, or it turned into something I didn't expect and don't like. So, even in the "Will not finish" category there are anime that I rated pretty highly, but still quit watching.

So, my rating system is not an exact science. The majority of ratings are based on a combination of how much I enjoyed it and how technically proficient it was. Also, it's ability to actually accomplish the sort of show it is portraying itself as matters, too.

With my ratings. As you can see in MyAnime, the vast majority of my rankings are "Good." I see it this way, I LIKE anime so by that virtue most of it is good and I get pleasure out of it. Everything good and above I feel I can easily recommend to like-minded viewers.

I also I try to go by the descriptions used by ANN.

A Masterpiece is a show that I personally can find no real fault with. I may be able to understand why others wouldn't like it, I can see what others don't like, but they don't affect my personal enjoyment at all. These are anime I can watch multiple times without ever really getting tired of.

If it's Excellent I definitely think it's worth owning and worth rewatching multiple times.

As it says, Very Good means I highly recommend seeing at least once. "Don't Miss it".

Good anime is Good anime. Although this category is the most subjective in my opinion. Shows are good here because they feature characteristics that I personally enjoy and I think like-linded viewers will too. this is the bottom level of enthusiastic recommendations.

Decent is the ranking I use for shows that I personally got some enjoyment from but don 't feel comfortable recommending more widely to others. These are show that I can clearly see faults with and if asked for my opinion I would immediately think of those faults.

Ratings below 'decent' are basically as their ANN descriptions say.

So-So
- is the worst worded of the rating descriptions, but it's true that "didn't catch my attention" is a valid way to describe these anime. The Decent rating assumes there is some aspect that really attracted me and caught my attention, even though there are faults. So-so anime means it has faults but the best aspects were mostly just unobjectionable and hinted at what I genuinely like.

Not Really Good- Not a total waste either. Can't describe it much better than that.

Weak- yeah, as it says, something may have given me hope- but that promise wasn't fulfilled and I really wish I hadn't watched it.

Bad-, "Really not recommended." I don't rate stuff I don't see a significant portion of, so there's not much rated at this level and below. If I rated something at this level consider the advice to be "I suffered so you won't have to."

Awful and Bad seem very close. I guess this is just for stuff I watched for some reason and hated completely but doesn't quite reach "torture" level. (I don't actually have anything currently rated "awful")

Worst Ever= MD Geist, at this point that is the only show I have rated here. It really does offend me on all storytelling, aesthetic, and moral aspects. Absolutely worthless in my humble opinion.

The idea that you have to stick by your initial impression is strange to me. Of course ratings can change. We aren't journalists archiving articles and rating for posterity, we are giving active recommendations to others that see the ratings.
I mainly stick with my ratings though. I have only made two changes with "Masterpiece" ratings, I believe. I once had Excel Saga rated as a masterpiece but upon a rewatch I just could excuse some of it's minor faults as strongly. I still love it though, so it is still rated Excellent. After seeing Cross Game I not only merely rated it Excellent, I rated Tenchi Muyo: "War on Geminar" above it on my list of of my 10 favorite shows of the year. It was about the point when I had watched the entire 50 episode series for the 4th time in two years (and feeling like I could watch it again) that I realized I was completely in love with it and had to bump up its rating.

When I'm rating something new I put my existing list in ratings order order and try to compare my lasting impression of the shows listed with the show I've just watched and rate accordingly. But when I do that I'll sometimes notice a discrepancy. Like seeing something listed as "good" that whose lasting impression features a major problem that should knock it down, or alternately a show that I clearly have more esteem for than the other "good" shows it's listed with and need to be bumped up.

I have no rules at all for the rating. I just arbitrarily pick a rating that represents how much I enjoyed the show.

One rule I do have is that I will not rate anything that I have not finished unless I think that it will never be finished in North America, such as Case Closed and Corrector Yui.
Because of that I do not give bad ratings. If I enjoy a show enough to finish it I will give it at lease a "so-so" rating.
I do not remember ever changing a rating.

My four-level rating system is not very well-thought out, based on which gutteral noise best expresses my feelings: Wooo, Oooh, Meh or Ugh.

My "system" is split into two parts:
1. Personal enjoyment: Did I find the characters interesting? Easy to relate to? Likable? If it's a comedy, was it funny? Romance, was it dramatic? Action, was it exciting? Did the story/plot make sense to me? Was the tone/themes well done?

2. Worth Owning/Purchasing: Would I pay money to see this? If it's an older/OOP title, is it worth searching for? Would I watch/read the material more than once? Do I just want to rent it/ stream online?

The ranking itself changes if I rewatch a show and my opinion differs from the first time I saw the series/film. Shows I didn't rank usually means I'll go back and see it again later on to properly rank it.

Masterpiece is rare; only shows/films I consider to be "one-of-kind", incredibly entertaining, and must own at all cost will receive this.

Excellent, Very Good, and Good= Will re-watch; want to/will purchase; highly to mildly enjoyable.

Decent, So-so, and Not Really Good= Might not re-watch (sometimes I'll give this to TV series that I didn't finish or want to finish later on); mild to not really enjoyable; will not buy/ might rent/ just watch online.

Weak, Bad, and Awful=Won't finish at all (usually given to OVAs or films; sometimes to series that had irritate me in some way); little to no enjoyment; won't buy at all.

Worst Ever (just like Masterpiece) is rare. I only have one Worst Ever and it's an OVA that just made me so mad; zero enjoyment; will never recommend or rewatch or touch it with a ten-foot pole; a horrible experience.

I don't take into account re-watchability because some works I have no intention of ever seeing again even though I highly regard them. Like Grave of the Fireflies, an amazing movie (rated it Masterpiece) but so emotionally draining that I don't think I could watch it a second time. Same with RAINBOW. There's also Colorful; I rated it Excellent but it doesn't have much re-watch value. It tells a nice story, has a twist at the end (that I should have seen coming) and then it ends. No need to watch it again.

Besides, if re-watchability was taken into account then Dragonball Z would be my highest-rated show. I must have watched it eight or nine times, and some scenes I've watched literally hundreds of times.

I do the same, although I forgot to mention it. Conversely, I don't rate something that I won't finish. I think that if you haven't fully watched something, your opinion is less valid than someone who has. Especially since most of the time when I drop something, I'm just not that into it or it's not my style; neither of which means it is actually bad.
