It's a remake of a Japanese SNES title and considered one of the grandfathers of the wandering dungeon series of games.

True that might be, but surely Rogue et all would be more deserving of such a title. Not that I've played any of them myself. This one in question looks a little fiendish for me.

You're quite correct on that one - Rogue (and its decent Nethack, and spinoffs like ADOM) are pretty much the old decrypt dinosaurs of the randomly generated dungeon, back before any sort of graphical interface.

Although if you've ever wondered where the term 'Wandering Dungeon' came from (I'm sure there's a fair few people who would be familiar with the Pokemon variants, or the Chocobo ones) this is pretty much the first place to start - Chunsoft cut its teeth with this, as well as a Dragon Quest 4 spinoff.

They're different variants of the same genre, due to different cultural influences.

Nethack has the million and one ways to die using a Cockatrice corpse as a weapon.

Shiren has a dungeon where it tries to make you use trap mechanisms to make it all the way down, or throw you up against an entire room full of monsters who could make you tempted to throw your DS if you make the wrong first move.

It's not as complex as Nethack et al, but it can prove surprisingly harder - I haven't found a way in Shiren to make yourself completely invulnerable to everything (or at least invunerable enough not to be able to intervene a turn later and at least TRY to salvage the situation) which is possible in Nethack.

They're very different takes on the random dungeon, and there's a bit of comedic value in turning monsters into riceballs, then gobbling them up.

If you have any suggestions or comments, let us know here.

- Just a thought.
