In every show there are questions that rise, where you have to tune in to find out what answer is revealed to the question in pose for a particular series. But, some shows leave things unexplained. Without an answer. For that, they're terrible. It is understandable that every question won't be or have an answer. You can come up with your own theory about a particular question in an anime that is left hanging. As the makers for whatever series it is might want to make it fun in doing that. Some cases though, can't be helped to wonder why an anime left something without an explaination. A series has its course to go to. Things to explore. Ideas being met. How much an anime explains every stuff it has is demonstrated with the amount it gives.
There are those which do it to an excessive level. Possibly having a viewer raise questions of their own. Then there are those which might do it except aren't quite as bad or have an excuse. First, I'll talk about when an anime does it but doesn't go too far. On Code Geass I thought of at times about the origins of the geass. Where it came from. Where did all of the geass stuff come from? That's one thing in that anime I didn't find clear. Maybe I missed something but I don't think it got explained that much. Toradora, one thing I wondered about in it. About the girl with red hair. Minorin or Minori. Or however you say her name. She claims in the series to have seen ghosts. Does she really see ghosts? Anything pertaining that doesn't give any more information than what the series showed to support Minori being able to see ghosts. Is she just saying that she can see ghosts? After all she is a weird character. The shows I just spoke of had me thinking what I said about them in which I found some lack of background. Aside, they had enough going for them to where there isn't too much holes that need unravel. These are instances that fall into the area where an anime kind of does it but doesn't go too far. Feel free to say what anime you believe would fall on that level. There are those which do it much more which I'm gonna get at next. To an overwhelmingly mystifying level. Anime that have an unexplained or unanswered question. Every show is capable of having one. Now, which series went too far? Took it too far, to an extent making things seem inconclusive. They did it in a capacity where there doesn't appear to be any rhyme or reason to leave a question out in the open. Where a show seems to just stick something in there without digging too deep on it. What anime can you say that about? I'm about to talk about the animes I've experienced it with. Others may follow suit. Few come to mind. Saikano/She The Ultimate Weapon Many questions in this anime unanswered. A lot of them had to do with the war that went on in Saikano. Chise, one of the two lead characters along with Shuji, got turned in a living weapon of destruction. Problem became of that with the show as they did not explain why the things pertaining Chise being a weapon come about. Her being the Japanese Military's secret weapon. Who were the people that turned Chise into a weapon? When I say that, I mean the specific people. On the first episode you see Chise being abucted spoiler[(what appears most likely) by a group of people after she and Shuji part ways when the couple walked through the streets at night]. But they don't ever show the face of the kidnappers. What was the logic, motive, or reason behind making Chise a weapon for the military/governmant? Why did she become a weapon? Then we have other unexplained questions. There is a war going on in the world. Except the show doesn't tell why the war is happening. Why is there a war? No explaination given to why the war is made. Also with no explaination, why there is no solution being tried and why each of the parties have to do what they do to their opposing side. Who is fighting who? Japan is getting attacked by American fighters. They don't just come out and say it, but they are definately Americans who are killing the Japanese from how one can make of it. What is the cause for all the havoc? Reasons unknown. There are some more of other unexplained questions in Saikano. But that will be plenty enough. What I covered are the big ones. Another thing I'll mention that I wondered about in the series. What do Chise and Shuji see in each other? Their relationship seemed to just go on a merry-go-round. To cap it all off in regards to this series, I'll say that Saikano/She The Ultimate Weapon focused more on its romance and drama aspect involving the two lead characters than it did about the war going on in the world of the anime. Spiral I talked about it before on another thread. A mysetery anime. Building every suspense it made on an episode by episode basis. All the mystery. All the puzzle. Compelling in a fashion that my intrigue to see how everything plays out go through to the end. Despite the attributes it had to offer Spiral couldn't answer every vital question. As the series went on, the unexplained questions become more glaring. Any sort of detail to the very vital questions are vague or not specific enough. Making everything the show muster up for its plot go to naught. They would tell about issues coming about but don't give any further information than they do while pushing things along. Ayumi Narumi, the main character of the series, had an older brother by the name of Kiyotaka. Spending the effort to find his brother Kiyotaka's whereabouts is the goal being sought. Only, the problem is, you don't get any answers or explaination about where Ayumi's brother is. Where did Kiyotaka Narumi go? Why did he disappear? None of which the information about that gets expanded on. Kiyotaka had a connection with a group called the Blade Children. What is his relationship with them? Blade Children. What are the Blade Children? We get to see the characters who are members of the group except it is never explained specifically what the Blade Children is. The Blade Children have to be killed. Why must they be killed? The Blade Children are made out to be this group of abomination. What makes them these bad people that they are being portrayed as such? They appear to be a group of criminals who have killed but any more information regarding that is lacking. They have a curse. Why are they cursed? The Blade Children are being hunted by the hunters. Who are the hunters and why are they hunting the Blade Children? Then there are other things that follow those mystery. The Protagonist of Spiral Ayumi is stated to be the hope, key, saviour, answer; name the help, to the Blade Children. Yet that isn't expanded on. What factor is he in helping the Blade Children? At a point towards the end of the show an ironic thing happened in the story of the anime. Kanone Hilbert the leader of the Blade Children betrayed the Blade Children by spoiler[cooperating with the hunters]. Whats the deal with that? Many things in Spiral went unsolved. It makes me think about the precursor to everything that transpired at hand. Spiral had so much questions unanswered that it will make the audience still wonder about the stuff that didn't get explained. Reason being is the show fails to be more specific about the vital information. Claymore Giving duties to the claymores that are part human part demon is an organization who are simply called the organization due to reasons inexplicable. Knowledge about their operation reveals through the course of the anime. Issue going forth would be what exactly the organization is. A lot of times it would be said. Characters keep saying the Organization. What is the "organization"? I don't have an idea with things being like that. Having me wonder about it are stuff like who leads the charge, what the motive or plans are, where are they hiding at. They don't go into any further specific about the question in vague than they do. Relationship with the characters also don't go deep. One, between Claire and Raki. Ever since Claire saved Raki after spoiler[Raki's family got slaughtered by a demon], Raki follows Claire to where she goes. He wants to be by her side, traveling with her, from then on. Why does he want to be with her following Claire to wherever she goes? What does it mean to Raki? What does he see in Claire to keep him going on? Is he wishing to repay Claire for saving him? None of which gets that specific about. Origins about the monsters roaming around the Claymore world unknown. How do they come about? Explaination about everything I brought up could be found in the manga. It just won't be in the anime tv series. I finish this opener up digging at occurrences in anime that become mystifying. Is it inexcusable to leave a question unexplained or unanswered? Why does it happen? Are there limitations in how much a series can do? |

That's what makes SaiKano so endearing: The specifics of the conflict are given very little attention, because they simply don't matter. We could have seen Chise battling enemies each episode in a manner akin to an episodic Sentai show, but the love story is wisely given full attention, save sections focussing on the supporting cast. I would thus state that it is perfectly acceptable, and in many cases somewhat beneficial, to leave certain details unexplained. Plot holes need to be covered of course, but ambiguous endings can be listed amongst the strengths of several titles. Area 88 and Elfen Lied come to mind, along with the aforementioned. Whilst the details can be a source of debate, the immediacy of the mood with which they leave the viewer often moots such consideration of specifics. |

On SaiKano: many of the questions you ask have been explored (and, to a large extent, given reasonable answers) in previous threads. We have a thread called ANN Series Discussion Index, and if you'd looked there, you would have found this:
Those three threads will give you plenty of food for thought. I'm less familiar interested in the other series, but there are discussion threads dealing with them, too. - abunai |

Regarding Claymore, the manga continues quite a ways beyond where the anime ended now, and the questions about the Organization and where the monsters come from are answered. This isn't the place for manga spoilers, so I won't go into the reasons here, but would suggest you try the manga if you enjoyed the anime. There's a thread in the manga forum for Claymore you could check for more info.
As for Raki's motives for following Clare, I thought it was understandable enough from the series that he was grateful to Clare and wanted to repay her somehow. Besides which, he had nowhere else to go. Also, I don't think it's so much what he sees in her that keeps him going, but what he sees that he can do for her (help maintain her humanity). That they didn't come straight out and say this is because one of the basic ideas in writing is "show don't tell" whenever possible. |

They explain the blade children and pretty much everything else in the Spiral manga. I never watched the anime adaptation but I found the manga utterly enjoyable. All the answers you're looking for are there so go read it.

Xam'd had some strong unanswered questions: spoiler[Why did Nakiami have to stay in that chamber for a millenia? Why didn't they show Haru and Akiyuki kiss? Please better explain the petrified Akiyuki thing.]

Neon Genesis Evangelion has been a big source of debate and speculation regarding some unanswered questions that occurred towards the end of the series and the End of Eva movie. Such examples would include spoiler[what Gendo said to Ritsuko before killing her, whose soul was in Eva-00 and whether or not it was really Asuka that Shinji seen after he rejected Instrumentality.]
Titles such as Gunslinger Girl and Hellsing that feature human protagonists made into something that's more than human never go into great detail on the technology and procedures that are done to make this happen. And as for Elfen Lied, I recall the manga going into greater detail on plot elements that were unexplored in the anime such as spoiler[the Director's intentions for the diclonius and Lucy's fate isn't left as ambiguous as the anime leaves it.] |

Though I enjoyed it thoroughly, Last Exile left a lot of questions unanswered. Just what the heck was/is Exile, and where did it come from? spoiler[It probably wasn't created by the Guild...otherwise they wouldn't have needed the four riddle-thingies to control it, just as anyone from any of the Prester civilizations would have. For that matter, where did the Guild come from? Were they originally from Prester? (I'm guessing not, but that's just MHO) And how/why did they come to the decision to bestow upon the "lowly" tribes of Prester the gift of flight, a very limited gift the Guild can take away on a simple whim?]

I got quite a few of those from Sci-fi Harry, there was supposed to be this big organization, spoiler[so big that it was apparently the entire world minus Harry] and throughout the series, we see someone who keeps sending messages through a computer to some of the people who want to do research on Harry, but we never find out who that is. There's really no one in the series that we see whom it could be either, it's not anyone who is receiving the messages, it's not spoiler[the fat man, who was checking every name of the organization's roster for Harry's name and he found every but Harry's name (including his own) as it is pretty heavily implied that he spent the whole series doing that], honestly, it's just no one. That organization just left a big question hanging about who was sending messages, running it, how spoiler[no one knew they were in it], etc. There are some series where I can see where hanging a slight question mark at the end would be a benefit (such as any given romantic comedy where the question of what they did afterwards will be answered by swarms of fanfics), but this isn't the case here.
The Girl Who Leapt Through Time left me with the question spoiler["Where did she get that one final time thingy again at the end?"] |

Claymore's just gotta have a second season somewhere in the future so we should wait for the manga to be adapted, really looking forward to it
I mean I could say Rozen Maiden also has a lot of questions left but some were answered in the 2nd season and more will be in the third. |

I too am of the opinion that "loose ends" generally cheapen or lessen the impact of a series or movie, making it appear sloppy. Generally, it's not usually an automatic series killing disaster, but it might keep it from ranking highly on the scale here. It depends on how much is left unexplained and the importance you placed on the loose ends. However, if they were pretty important things it can definitely ruin a series for me.

I wouldn't say loose ends always ruin series, Kruzer, because Haibane Renmei was amazing even though they left a lot unanswered. I think the unexplained things made the show better rather than cheapen it. That is purely subjective though and most of the time unexplained things tick me off.
I can deal with little things not being explained, like in Rozen Maiden spoiler[ the whole thing with Jun having magic hands. Is he related to the doll maker or is he just a girly man?] It wasn't big enough for me to be mad, but spoiler[not having an end to the Alice Game ] was enough to get me cursing at my TV. I mean they had a whole season to work with and only spoiler[ one doll was killed off!] I wonder if studios and creators mean to leave important plot points hanging or if they just forget. |

My unanswered question would be about Element Hunters. Is Homi a boy or a girl(or both?)?
But jokes aside. I can't remember any in special right now, so I'll go with Kaze no Stigma. Did the former Lapis love or hate Kazuma? Seen the series twice and I still don't understand that. At some point I thought she did and then bang, she reveals her former dying wishes. That was probably the only dramatic part of the anime, sadly. Great series and it's quite sad that we won't have a second season. |

Two, not one. spoiler[Hina Ichigo had been defeated by Shinku way back in the first season, and finally expired, as the loophole that had allowed Shinku to support her continued existence wasn't permanent, and Suigentou was the one who took out Souseiseki*, so she wasn't brought back after the fake doll's actions were undone. *note: there is a possibility I'm mixing up which of the twins didn't come back.] Besides which, spoiler[it ended with the whole: You can become a real girl without playing the Alice Game and bring back your sisters, too] thing. |
