Drosselmeyer just loves a good tragedy, and so do I quite frankly! So gather round for stories of terror!
Has anything disastrous or tragic or even near disastrous or tragic ever happened to any part of your anime/manga/figurines/etc. collection(s)? It could something as major as the whole thing burning or as (relatively) minor as a sticky label coming off wrong and ruining the insert. Or trying to get a DVD out and having it break because the holding part of the case was incredibly ill-designed, or accidentally ripping a page out. Or it could be the fault of a younger sibling messing with a figurine that they shouldn't have and coming back home to find it snapped in two. My most tragic story is sad indeed, I was enjoying myself one afternoon, just reading manga by the light of the natural sun with a nice big glass of ice cold water to quench my thirst. "Oh, hello, kitty," I say as my small fuzzy grey cat walks by me "Are you going to allow me to pet you? You are? What a rare treat!" The cat circled around, I relaxed and put my manga down to pet her. She walked around, whipping her fluffy tail about as cats do. She circled under the chair, around the room, and finally under the table where I had set my glass of ice cold water down. With one flip of her tail, the little table with the water fell over and splashed directly onto my lower manga book shelf. It took all I had to not strangle that cat right then and there, an entire series had water on them to some degree, but 7 got hit really badly. Had to dry those things out for a month! As tragic as this was though, it was still water which at least doesn't dry sticky and as I flipped through them earlier today, only a few look like they were ever water damaged. I seem to have a problem with water and anime/manga actually, spilled water on some of my Ranma 1/2 DVD and it soaked an insert. Thing never dried right, but at least that was my fault and not my stupid cat's fault! |

Well, there was the time I felt like rewatching Escaflowne, so I popped the first DVD in and started it up. Everything was fine until the fourth episode, whereby I discovered that it had completely gone kaput in a case of "DVD rot". Horrified, I put the rest of the DVDs in my player, only to find that they too were stuffy to one degree or another (the second DVD was nigh-on unwatchable). Even more horrified, I checked some other series. Most of the disks I tried out had minor problems, though thankfully none as bad as Escaflowne's second DVD. Of course, I only checked about ten percent of my then-collection, so I have no idea how I am for the rest. I suppose I really don't want to know.
I have no idea how it happened. I had been careful with my DVDs, never exposing them to sunlight or dust, never allowing them to get scratched, never even rewatching them much. So of course I was devastated. A real tragedy that was, but it was also an eye-opener. I had been buying DVDs religiously before then in the thought that as long as I looked after them I could rewatch them for the next few decades. That was the big justification for buying them instead of borrowing them from friends or downloading them off the net. So, in a way, that incident got me to start watching fansubs. I still buy DVDs now, but only so I can reimburse companies for having watched the series by way of fansubs. I no longer harbour any illusions of actually being able to watch them in a few years' time. |

We were having a party at my 3rd apt when I heard a loud slam from my room.I laughed and didn't think anything of it.Later that night when I opened my room I noticed that the carpet from my closet was two toned.Kind of like it was WET! Upon opening the door I found that the next door neighbor's water heater busted and had flooded my master bedroom closet.Everything on the ground had a 8hr soak by the time I found them.I reported the damage to the managment but they said there was nothing they could do.I lost so many VHS tapes that day.
![]() Finally collecting all the Trigun tapes (and the foil cards) and celebrating by marathoning all of them,Just to have the first and hardest to find tape get mangled by the VCR.I'm talking, like, straight mangled to the point where it was unwatchable, man. ![]() |

A few years ago in college, I let someone borrow one of my Tenchi Muyo OAV DVDs. Problem was I never got it back. I just recently bought another copy of said DVD off Amazon. That's just about the only tragic event that ever happened to anything within my anime collection.

Well, I managed to put it back together, but I accidentally smashed the slipcover to my Death Note season 1 boxset one time.
I was in the dorm watching the series at the time, actually, on my dormy bed. Now, my dormy bed, like many, was hoisted four feet above the ground to make room for storage space below. In the middle of the show, I heard my RA knocking on my door, so I said "Coming!" and hopped off my bed... ...planting my feet directly on the slipcase and busting it open like an overripe tomato. ![]() I yelped in a manner very similar to those kids on Charlie Brown, (you know, "AAAAUGH!") and my RA thought I had injured myself. I went to the door and just kinda explained, embarrassed, what I'd done. I was only able to laugh about it after carefully folding the slipcase back together. I was amazed I didn't need tape, but it's still bent and pitiful looking all over. ![]() |

That's harsh to have happened to you, JesuOtaku. That Death Note thing I mentioned was my only really big "tragedy" of my collection to happen so far.

Well, I'm actually able to laugh about it now because my RA freaking out thinking I was injured was pretty funny. ![]() ![]() |

Well I have 2 tragic stories regarding my collection. The first happened a few years ago. Many years ago in fact. This takes place back in the magical days of vhs. I let my friend borrow a large collection of my vhs to watch. He borrowed most of my Kenshin vhs and also part of my DBZ collection. Well he was not exactly the best at keeping his room clean. His mom was cleaning stuff out as she was tired of the mess. He had part of my tapes in a box and she thought it was stuff to throw out. I lost like 15 or so vhs tapes. Now mind you these were $20 a pop. So that was a nice chunk of change just tossed out. Joy.
The other just happened 2 months ago. While moving stuff over to my new house I had placed bags/boxes on the ground by the back of my car after getting them out of my trunk. My friend/roommate helped me take them in. I asked if he got them all with me and he said yea he had. Well he hadn't. There was one right behind my back tire on the passenger side. I got in to move my car back into the parking area and as I backed up I heard a nice big crunching sound. That would be me backing up over several of my dvds. Half of my Tehxnolyze dvds wound up getting crushed beyond repair. |

Resident Assistant/Advisor, in a college dorm, there's at least 1 per building, sometimes 1 per every floor or two, they generally try to fix any problems that might exist on the floor between roommates (internal arguments within the room), or rooms (such as one room blaring music all the time and annoying everyone), etc. Most of them are generally cool, friendly, and helpful to you and at the very least, mine was able to pretend that my bizarre gaming, anime, and vampire-like behaviours were normal (she didn't do a good job faking it, but she was still nice). They also hold floor meetings sometimes to talk about random stuff dorm related, like how to close up your dorm for a holiday weekend and such, or just to do ice-breaker things here and there. They do not drill you to do your work or study since they're not your parent. |

Well, it's not anime, but i once plunged one of my swords (i collect them, renaissance faire for the win!) through my final fantasy X box and disk while showing it off to a friend. the box was on the floor, and i had put the sword tip down a little hard to rest my arms. i realized what i had done, pulled the skewered box off the sword, and opened it, only to have roughly a third of the disk come out and shard all over the floor. i still keep the busted-ass thing as a reminder.
as for anime, luckily the above case is very rare, since i generally take very good, some would say obsessive care of my things. but a few months back, i loaned my "Requiem from the Darkness" complete set to a friend (great show, by the way). now, i really do love a nice, pristine box set. shelf wear and wrinkles will happen, it's just reality, but i like to keep them as neat and good looking as possible. when i got it back, it had scratches and streaks all over the back. for those who haven't seen it, the slip case is completely black so it show up really bad. but i could handle it. the clincher was that, somehow, she had ripped off the label by accident and left a one of those wonderful "Gluey paper" streaks that come from improper ripping of a sticker. i eventually got the label back from her, but the damage was done, even when i super glued it back in place. as for my other tragedy, i haven't even seen it yet. i loaned my friend my first two seasons of "Rurouni Kenshin". one day, he calls me all distraught and tells me that, somehow, the boxes are destroyed. he says the disks are fine, but still, it hurts bad, especially since kenshin is in my top 5 faves of all time. i have yet to get the disks back, so maybe i haven't properly absorbed. let it be known that generally all these guys are competent, but sh*t, as they say, happens. |

My most valuable things seem to get ruined.
I dropped my Kimagure Orange Road Sound Color 1 that popped out of the case and landed on the hard balcony surface. The CD snapped right in two. That CD is tough to find a copy of these days. An even more rare CD of mine, an Urusei Yatsura remix collection, has some very odd scratches on it. The scratches go in crooked jagged lines like someone took a knife to it. To this day I have no idea or explanation how those scratches got there. Most of the songs play ok but one song (of course one of my favorites on the CD will not play through). |

That's what I don't understand about when I lend things to people sometimes: what the hell did they do to it? Back in high school, I lent a few manga, a DS game, and a PS2 game to someone (I have never since lent to her again and quite frankly, I'm no longer friends with her) and she damn near lost the manga, my Shadow of the Colossus disc came back scratched as all hell (I told the next person I lent it to to use his disc resurfacer on it, and he's far better with borrowing stuff), she lost the DS game and I never saw Kirby Canvas Curse again, and everything came back in damn near horrid condition. I mean, my god, she's in an apartment with just her mom, what void did my manga almost fall into? Worse yet, she lost my only spare GBA/DS charger! I used to have three, but I manage with two, so that's not too bad.
I mean, you're borrowing something from someone else, I don't intend to replace it due to my stupidity so I take of stuff people lend me and I keep things where my cats are not likely to mess with them and I expect the same from them logically. That's also why my lending policies changed to only lend things that can be easily replaced. If it's something that can't be easily replaced, let them read/watch/play it at your house so at least you have tabs on it and it's not likely to spontaneously combust while it's at your friend's house out of your sight. I also almost ruined my Kingdom Hearts soundtrack simply by keeping it in the car. Now I only keep burned copies in the car because I know I treat those CDs like garbage (and in fact, they are, you can see through them just like a recent Tokyopop manga, and the CDs just feel like garbage too). Then I copied it onto my computer and all but a couple songs went through fine. |

I haven't done too long so I probably don't have anything too bad. The worse was probably when I bought one of the Hellsing OVAs and when I got home I realised the Securety device had not been removed from the case. I tried for quite some time to figure out a way to remove the device because I couldnt open it up, and eventualy asked my mother to try. After a little bit of fidleing she then broke the case, and I was quite ticked that if that was something I was willing to do i would have done it myself. I had to search through other DVD cases to find something that resembled the original though the slip still os a little off. Plus maybe a couple of Hellsing manga I have the pages have almost come out.
