This is going to be my first post. I notice in some anime or manga when there is an annoying character who bring craziness and abnormality into the main character (who point of view is being told) life, they almost always want that annoying person out of the lives and want to go back to how things were, calm and normal. Then the crazy thing is once that person is gone, the main character wants that person back.

Examples are Pita Ten spoiler[when Misha comes into Kotarou life, her main passion in life is stalking and glomping Kotarou. Kotarou in some intances mention the fact or hinted that he wish for a life without Misha. Then when that happen (she was actunally taking a angel exam which should have lasted two days but in earth time a week) he was happy at first for the first two days enjoying the calmness but after a week he began to worry about her and wish she was back. He was so happy when she was back. ]

The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya( the movie not out yet but I reading the manga right now.) spoiler[Kyon had more then once mention he want to live a normal life without Haruhi but when she is gone he can’t go back to the things were. He wants her back badly after all those time he say without her things are better. ]

Can you think of other examples of this and what do you think of it, do you think that the main character need that type of person in their lives? For me it a yes, what done is done, that person is a part of the main character life. Though it always seen like it either having the person with you every single day or they have to be gone forever till you regret ever wishing them gone.

I never saw this example but it would suck if that person really can’t come back once you wish they are.

This is hardly a plot device unique to anime and manga, though. In fact, it's pretty common across the board in all forms of media. The annoying character creates conflict for the story while also making the life of the protagonist more interesting, so it capably serves a double purpose.

Well, a more recent example for me was Saiyuki. Priest Genjo Sanzo is forced to travel with 3 other guys who annoy the hell of him in one way or another, (especially Goku) and yet he needs their help so he's stuck with them.

Yes I forgot about Saiyuki, it so funny that Sanzo is mad when they are here and not here.

I totally agree with that, that is the best way to word it. Smile

FLCL - When Haruko leaves the town, Naota is constantly bored and grumbling about how boring things are. he wonders what could possibly be going on outside the fog and what Haruko could be doing at that moment. Kinda glad they didn't spend too much time on this part of the anime because it would have been so drug out and uneventful. Immediately when she returns, everything is chaotic and interesting again: including the art style.

Also, ROD TV, even though it only lasts for a very very short time (as in like maybe half an episode). When Nenene has had enough of the Paper Sisters and kicks them out, she almost immediately goes to get them because she realizes that her life is better with them in it. Again, I'm glad she realized it early and not much time was wasted on her coming to that realization.

Shugo Chara also seems like it's heading in that direction with Amu and Ikuto. While he drives her and the other guardians insane, they (esp Amu) want him to come back even though he's not really part of the group. They just don't like seeing him used by Easter. This series, however, is taking a long time to get around to that point and they keep teasing me with moments where you think there will be a break through and it doesn't happen.

Full Metal Panic is another great example with Kaname's blatant frustration with Sousuke when he's causing havoc and her never ending boredom without him.

I'm sure I could think of many many more, but this does seem to be a pretty common theme in anime. Some characters create conflict by being around their foils and then the conflict subsides and leaves an emptiness for both the main character and the viewer. It can also allow us to relate better to the main character because I think many people have come across these types in their lives and would much prefer their lively antics over none at all.

When they make episodes of those characters being gone, I think one episode is enough for us to get the point.

I agree it was so much interesting in FLCL when Haruko is back. Not just for us viewers but for Naota too, that whyspoiler[ I wish in the ending Haruko didn't leave. ]

I agree with you, but I think the ending is appropriate. spoiler[it's pretty clear that she's just using him and she's way too old for him anyways - even though she's not exactly mature. I think everyone can relate to the unrequited love of the series and that's what contributes to its popularity.] Even though the ending was so out there, it's still relate-able. Just be glad they didn't have another episode to tie everything up. THEN it would have been REALLY boring.
