I just finished this movie and i have a lot of questions. First off let me start out by saying that this was a great movie. Now there were a whole lot of changes here some for the god others for the worse. I will start out with the animation I really enjoyed this animation more so than the tv series animation. I was reall confused about Van though, spoiler[I didn't like his new outfit or understand why he had any magical powers. And where did his whole depression feling come from not a fan of ]that I prefer old van. 1 thing that caught me off guard was there was only spoiler[1 mecha battle throughtout the ]whole movie Shocked. spoiler[Did other Guymelfs not exist]. I thought that the role of allen was useless and i like his old animations better. At the end i found it funny that they kept one thing of the originalspoiler[ Folken dying.] Hitomi didn't serve any purpose either. She looked more out of place than anything almost as she was jus put in there to be there. I really missed the connection between Van and Escaflowne as it wasn't aparant here. i loved the darkness of the movie as well as the new Folken. I do wish that some things were better explaned but you can't do everything in an hour and a half. Lastly I feel like instead of doing this they should redo the series with this storyline and build on it and take some stuff from the original also. This is a great movie and is almost like an alternate universe on Escaflowne.

..... you didn't seem to ask any questions in there.

I've only seen the movie once, and it was quite a while ago too, so I guess I'll have to pester my brother to let me watch it again...

That's kind of the point, I think he was just telling us what he thought of the movie in comparison to the series Anime smallmouth + sweatdrop.

Anyway, it's good that you (balla) saw it as an alternate universe because that's exactly what it is. I've heard quite a few people say they dislike the movie because it doesn't hold any continuity from the series. But, I've heard the explanations from the producer, the director, and even in the words of the seiyuu (in the DVD extras), and thanks to them, I found a whole new appreciation afterwards.

I suppose it was a shame that Allen and a lot of other characters didn't have very big roles, but it is a movie after all, and things can get rushed.

The only other thing that bugged me besides the ending was:

spoiler[ Jajuka being the one that actually killed Folken. I mean, of all people, Jajuka?!]

All in all, though, I still feel it's an Excellent movie. Great art, animation, music (especially), and a nice tale of fantasy, adventure, and a little romance (that I wish they should've worked on a bit more).

spoiler[In the series everyone and his brother had a melef, but in the movie they were very rare. Even the one they got for Dilandau was a relic from an older time. ] Remember that this is an alterante universe and things are different on this Geia.

I've only seen this movie once years ago (I wanna get that box set!). Don't remember much besides realizing everyone in my family hates anime. I guess the movie was okay.
..... you didn't seem to ask any questions in there
Well i jus wanted to hear peoples opinions about it and i guess while i was raving i forgot my questions Embarassed anyways don't take my review the wrong way it was a great movie that I enjoyed indeed i jus thought that there could be so much more they could of done if they made an entire alternate universe series. the
reason why Van hates Folken, Folken hates Van was pretty lame.

What happened to Dornkirk.
I would advise people to see the movie first so they won't have predetermined ideas or expectations. I also wish they explaned they whole clan and how this part got taken over by this part aspect. I feel this would be better served as an OVA between 8-13 eps.

The movie rocked my pants of so much I had to see it twice.... and change my pants.

Seriously, the imagery in this movie was so breathtakingly beautiful that it was clear that a lot of hard work had gone into it. Personally the first time I saw it I was kind of disappointed by the ending as it seemed a little rushed. Volken was such a great and evil villain (the kind I love the most) that I really wanted him to have a much more dramatic death and an epic last battle. I just love Evil characters like him who are just so unhappy, sombre and depressed that they want to end the world. I love him so much in fact that I am starting to question my own sexuality…. Wait a minute! (thinking) Ayanami, Ayanami, Ayamami, Ayanami. Ahhhh, that was a close one. Anywaste, he kind of reminds me of the bad guy in R.O.D, which too did some rocking of my poor defenceless pants.

Abetter ending could have been made had the movie been 30 minutes longer but if that came at the price of the fluid animation I would rather keep the animation. The animation is so, god damn, fluid that makes want to sacrifice a few more virgins to the anime gods and ask for more anime movies to be made.

However the second time I saw it I was happy with all of it. I too was surprised by the magic powers but the fighting between Van and Dilandau was so beautiful that it rocked my pants off twice, which doesn't happen often mind you.

I question the need for, and propriety of, doing another version of Visions of Escaflowne. I thought the series story was nicely self-contained and the movie offered a great alternate retelling.

As for Hitomi not serving any purpose in the movie? Might look that way on the surface, but spoiler[as Wing Goddess she was the one who resonated with Escaflowne, so that Escaflowne's nature - whether it was good or bad - was very much determined by her state of mind. Remember, Folken recruited her specifically because he thought she had sufficient self-hating and self-destructive inclinations to shape Escaflowne down a destructive path, and it was only her discovery of value for her life, and her love for Van, which shaped it down it ultimate "good" path instead. And also she was the only one who could summon it.] Thus the fate of the world was distinctly affected by what she did and felt, as was the case in the series (though in an entirely different way).

I thought the movie was absolutely gorgeous, and the darker atmosphere more interesting than in the series. Once you recognize the movie as being an alternate universe, it's easier to appreciate the character differences. I really liked movie-Millerna, which is a first for me as I found her highly annoying in the series. At last, she's got 'tude.

Mostly the little details are what made me happy. The almost chilling sounds the guymelefs make when fighting each other, Dilandau's little punishment from Folken, the scenery when Hitomi is still on Earth. And Shesta, oooh Shesta, I loved the Dragonslayers in the series and it warms my heart to see one of them have a somewhat more important role. Even if the design on his forehead looks like a sperm.

The fact that I watched a bootleg was only a minor distraction. Bonus points for the subtitle of "Whore you?"
