The rainbows are not gratuitous. That becomes clear in the second movie. It's a new, and crucial, motif.

Just got home from seeing 1.0 in the theater (thank you, Seattle!). It is SO GOOD!!!
Even better than the original, which is an amazing show! |

I thought it was on record somewhere that Shinji Ikari wasn't high on Spike Spencer's list of Favorite Characters I've Voiced, which probably only exacerbates the character's flaws.
Which would be all well and good if he was reviewing the 2nd movie. |

While I'll admit that they probably stuck a little too close to the first 5 episodes for the movie's own good, I will say that the way they handled episode 6 goes a long way towards redeeming this film; it's done just differently from the series to feel (at least a little) fresh, the final battle with Ramiel (?) is done in an epic/cinematic fashion that the entire series never even came close to attaining, and spoiler[Misato taking Shinji to see Fake Lilith] adds a serious "WTF?!" element for established fans.
Of course, I consider myself an "Evangelion" nut, so I guess everything I just said is biased.

I have read some of Arthur C. Clarke"Childhood's End before. Many part of this movie especially Human Instrumentality Project came directly from this book. I love to analyze all part of movie when I am seeing. As well this is masterpiece and I am going to see the sequel to understand more.

There may not be many differences in 1.0, but I just finished watching the end of 2.0. It was amazing. It's almost a completely different story now.

It's only gratuitous to him because he's comparing it as a change/addition from the TV series. Watched on its own the rainbows are a particular visual motif and not anything "extra". |

As much as I love Evangelion, don't give Anno so much credit. He probably incorporated more of Yoshiyuki Tomino's Space Runaway Ideon, which itself borrowed from Childhood's End. The difference is that Evangelion is watchable and Ideon is too cheesy for words. Having seen this already, I'm curious as to the quality of the dub myself, but I can wait for the DVD or Blu-Ray to be released for R1. The first movie is essentially fanservice in the form of reanimated scenes from the series. The second appears to be where the new aspects really kick in. |

As someone who was neutral on the TV series, I thought that Eva 1.0 was a near masterpiece. Nearly every single problem I had with the original, even down to the more minor or least-damaging ones, were remedied, whether it was the frostier relationship between Shinji and Misato or the alterations in Shinji's runaway scenes. Add in the enhancements to some of the better moments from the series, such as the final Angel battle in the film, the more realistic feel to the movie and characters, and the confrontations between Shinji and Misato (among others) and Eva 1.0, to me, was nearly flawless.
The sole thing holding me back from going all the way is that the first 30 or so minutes felt too much like a rehash of the first episode. Even from a newcomer's standpoint, it felt like it would be something that would leave them lost, especially with its pacing. Luckily, that was within the first part of the film and was still mildly interesting in its own right. On a more minor note, the fanservice spoiler[(namely Rei's nude scenes)], too, gave off a similar feeling of alienation, as it seemed more a gift to fans than being anything really pertaining to the film or of worth to new viewers. All this said, I don't think it's entirely fair to simply say it is rehash with new animation. Yes, it treads land previously covered in the original, but it did more than enough to distinguish itself throughout from the series in many ways. I consider it to be closer to an alternative take than a do-over or revamp. Also, I think it would have been too early to expect them to jump full-on into a totally different story, since these are supposed to be "rebuilds" and this is the first film. Even so, it did enough to give itself an identity and also stay faithful in certain terms, without imbuing itself too much from the series. |

And when I first watched the movie on a Japanese import DVD, it went very well with the movie's atmosphere. And of course, we all know that Eva isn't merely a 'giant robot anime' anyway. |

My friend and I sat in the middle, on the right-hand side of the 7pm showing. We were surrounded by young fellas from Japan (!) and it was pretty neat getting to talk to fans of the series from there.

After this and the earlier review, I've more or less decided to wait until the second movie comes out and watch the first two together; then, presumably, this will feel less like a rehash and more like the first part of a quadrilogy, once you can see how any changes they make actually pan out.

1.01 is the DVD version. For whatever reason, it was marked as 1.0.1 in the Anime Expo program schedule. Not sure if it was a typo or not. |
