One Piece? Seriously? I'm not saying the series is bad, don't get me wrong, but the art style and action is far too cartoonish to transfer well to the live action, it would wind up looking cheesy.
Although, if they played it as campy, it might make a good comedy...? Most of the others on this list I'd give a nod to, especially "Monster." |

I can see a couple of these as Live Action, but Ouran? I wonder how that would turn out if it ever was made into one
I might be able to see a FMA one, but for some reason I just can't picture it without it coming off as cheesy.... |

Isn't "Monster" already getting a live-action film?

There's already a live-action Slam Dunk. It's called White Men Can't Jump. Someone could argue that POTC is basically OP, but it's more of a Monkey Island rip-off. I'm surprised the Japanese are ok with an LA Monster, though, since they know Hollywood's going to rape it. [Well, ok, I met the AHOV script guy who worked on Monster, and he's a decent chap if he hangs out with Harlan Ellison. But his take on that comic still pissed me off, and I hope his finished draft for Monster isn't equally of the condescending social commentary variety.] I think Gin Tama would work better as an LA tv show, but then they fucked up The Tick, so who knows? Ouran can be done, but would probably bomb outside of Japan. Jojo's sort of been done with The Covenant and Tenacious D and the Pick of Destiny.

Kimi ni Todoke, We Were There, and Tenshi Nanka Ja Nai would make good live action J-Dramas. There's already been several J-Dramas that resemble Ouran High School Club so I see that being done as well.
Not sure about Slam Dunk I'll depend on how the basketball scenes are done. |

Most of this list is just what the most popular manga over there is, with no regard to the context of the question.
Although a Jojo movie done in the style of the live action Cutey Honey would be pretty [expletive] awesome. |

I will be interested to see what comes from this survey if anything. Slam Dunk, Ouran, and FMA all would be interesting (so would others on the list).

Oh man, I can't imagine a live action One Piece, particularly since it seems like Japanese films aren't generally as high-budget as something you get from Hollywood. That's one series that I think fits best in an animated medium.
I can actually see a LA Ouran, but I think it would probably end up looking pretty manic, like the film for Kamikaze Girls. (Not that it would be a BAD thing...) |

If they do Slam Dunk(and they probably will. Its not like they have to build any sets) they have to get actors who can actually play basketball. I've seen a lot of basketball scenes in movies and shows where the actors obviously never played in their lives, shooting two-handed and stuff. I play basketball regularly, so I notice those things and it looks funny to me. Most people probably don't notice. I could see some composer watching Nodame Cantebile and being agast at the composing, but most people don't care.
I'd like to see Genshiken done as a live action show(if they don't screw it up, of course, but Japan doesn't do that often with adaptations). It won't cost a ton. Just a rent out a school somewhere! |

A Gintama movie would be so cheesy! I'd love to see that! (:p I'm actually hoping for an animated movie, which unlike its Shonen Jump bros, Gintama's never even had one of...Now that would rock!)
Ouran would be fun, Slam Dunk could work, and FMA would be...interesting. CGI Al, anyone? |

So it's been said, but I've heard nada about casting, directors, scriptwriters, etc., so my guess is it's either in super-early planning or somebody bought the rights and hasn't done anything with it. I'd rather it be a live-action series, though. 18 volumes would be a lot to condense into one movie (they'd have to make HUGE cuts); at least 20th Century Boys had the sense to make 3 movies. |

As much as I am a fan of the One Piece franchise, I am total agreement with the majority here. One Piece is not something that you can just make into a live action drama. I hope that nobody will try to attempt it either, because it just wouldn't be One Piece. There are too many fantasy elements, as well as the comedy style I feel wouldn't suit a live action series. Ouran on the other hand...

I was never crazy about the Slam Dunk manga, but I could see it easily being turned into a live-action TV series ala the (absolutely wonderful) Nodame Cantabile one. |
