I want all 3 of these movies. The dub sounds excellent! Patrick Stewart as one of the characters in Nausicaa, that's soo cool. Makes it even better. |

He as Yupa-sama is the main reason for me to listen to a dub deliberately for the first time in my life.  But Nausicaa's voice is not as expressive...(sigh). And why didn't Disney put Uma Thurman's voice (as Kushana) in the trailer?

Hmm.. I've liked the Kiki's, Spirited Away, and Mononoke dubs, but I am slightly doubtful about these (except The Cat Returns, the Baron's voice rocks.) Then again, I don't think those were very good trailers.. I am looking forward to seeing more. Patrick Stewart as Yupa and Uma Thurman as Kushana? Holy crap, that's awesome.

I hope this makes up for Disney Screw ups. If they suck I have another reason to hate Disney more.

I am not buying this for the dub.I am buying this for the orginial format of it being in japanese.If i could afford to import the orginial from japan i would.Personally i could care less for the audio in english.

I wouldn't mind an Italian or French dub for Porco Rosso, as long as they are solid. After all, Tokiko Kato (Gina's voice) is a chanson singer and performed Le Temps Des Cerises by herself. I wonder if Disney's French dub is the original one featuring Jean Reno as Porco; wish they keep his voice.

don't get me wrong they have a solid dub cast

Just wondering. For anyone who's seen both Whisper of the Heart and Cat Returns, which film is better? I only saw the latter one so far, and liked it, but considered it fairly disposable entertainment. I'd probably recommend it to the generation of fans who didn't grow up on Totoro (or even Mononoke Hime)though.

Finally! Now my brothers will stop bugging the hell out of me for the old, bad Nausicaa dub because they're so desperate to get a copy--ANY copy--of the anime.
And I have to admit that the Porco Rosso thing looks col--I'll have to get that one to when it's out. |

Yeah, one reason I'm excited about the DVD is because of Patrick Stewart as Yupa (when I first heard he was going to be a part of the voice cast, and no part was mentioned, I could tell he was going to be the voice of Yupa), because I'm an old (and recovered) Trekkie who grew up with ST:TNG.
As an overall thing, talented screen actors make good voice actors for the very reason they are good screen actors: they know HOW to use their voice to achieve desired effects. If Disney had used more screen talent in their voice casting for their other Ghibli dubs, then maybe sub-enthusiasts like myself would welcome dubs a bit more. Dubs are all well and good when the voice talent actually HAS talent and uses it effectively, and I'm glad that Disney appeared to make an effort to do this with Ghibli's debue (sp?) film. |
