If you're looking for that next great anime movie, I suggest you check out "They Were Eleven" ("Jûichi-nin iru!") . I admit, I never heard of this movie before I saw it in my anime club but I really liked it. It's a good old school sci-fi adventure film with interesting characters. The graphics might be a bit dated (it was made in 1986) but the movie itself is very atmospheric.
The only problem is that it might be a little difficult to find.
However, if you do know where to find it I suggest you check it out.
I would also like to know what people who saw this anime thought about it.

I agree with you. I really, really like They Were Eleven. I thought I read a while back that They Were Eleven would be re-released as a cheapie DVD. I can't find the link, though... I know I read it at ANN.
I immediately thought I would dislike the film because of the dated character designs and wacky hair. But the story just dragged me in and I was hooked through the whole thing. I am lucky enough to own an old subtitled VHS copy of this (I found it at a movie rental store's VHS blowout sale), but it's going to die on me really soon. :(
I believe (please correct me if I'm wrong) that it's based on an old Japanese horror story about a group of 10 kids who are staying in a haunted house, and and someone extra shows up with no explanation. I really like the sci-fi twist, though.

Wow, one doesn't see this one mentioned offen. I really enjoyed this film. All the elements fit together well, and the suspense was pulled off nicely. Nice to see some oldschool get recognized.

I borrowed "They Were Eleven" from a friend and watched it yesterday. I think it's a really good "old school" movie. If you haven't seen it yet, I'd say it's at least worth a rent; and if you're a sci-fi buff then this movie will be right up your alley.
