I couldn't find a thread on this, so I decided to create one.
So basically, in 2009, a new film based on the Dragon Ball franchise is going to be released. It will be live-action.
Personally, I think this is a horrible idea. Dragon Ball is a manga/anime series and should remain so. Seeing a live-action version would probably be cheesy and would ruin it, at least for me.
So I was wondering what everybody's thoughts on this were?

I get confused when people say things like "this movie is going to ruin the original." How is this movie's quality going to affect the quality of the anime and manga? If the movie sucks then the movie sucks. It has no affect on the Dragon Ball that we all know and love.... Or hate.

So far it really isn't finding favor with the fans right now, because for one, people to me seem afraid of live action adaptions of stuff they love because for the most part, they have ruined those certain franchises or what not. And I can't blame them. I remember going to watch Doom and I thought it wasn't that great. And then people here and there were saying how Transformers was going to suck when in reality it kicked butt. Who knows, but I get the feeling the Japanese will dig it. I'm not going to take sides on whether it's bad or not until I actually watch it. And I'll be standing that ground and criticizing people who want to take the stance of it's going to suck before it at least comes out.

Actually I could accredit Chow Yun Fat as the reason I would want to go see the movie

Amen to that.
This is one of those cases where I enjoyed the original product, (though not as much as my DBZ-holic boyfriend,) but am not concerned about a movie adaptation. Two reasons:
1. The original will ALWAYS be there. They're not "ruining" it. There's no way to do that. That's what we call 4Kids' treatise of One Piece or something. (The rap, oh man, that rap...)
2. Um, is there anything particularly prestigious or non-cheesy about the original to bowdlerize? Nooo. The original was just as silly, over-the-top and devoid of any purpose save for cool testosterone-filled fighting as any live-action adaptation could be, and I get a kick out of watching crazy fighting, (yay, Kung Fu Hustle!) so I'll kill 8 bucks for this steaming pile of action, and I KNOW it's going to be stupid. Newsflash: So was the original DBZ. It's still fun.

It is pretty annoying that another, yet quite popular or perhaps known title to be put in the theaters.
My reaction when I found out that the live action DBZ is going to be made was quite blunt, sarcastic, but quite nonchalant with a phrase, "ehh... so what. Another has pop up for the ridiculous masses to watch."
There may have been movies that disappointed fans of a particular title, but as far as I have seen, there have been more disappointments toward live-action movies that are based on games than those that are based on animation.
Sure, Transformers was pretty awesome, and so was Spiderman, but I have seen G-Savior and so did other Gundam fans, which their reactions were uncannily disgusted. (animation based)
Titles like Doom or Resident Evil, gave fans disappointment because either it didn't ring true to the original or what ever. (game based)
A lot of these titles came to be good because of how acknowledgeable the creators are from the originals; I just find others to be disappointing when the creators are either ignorant or lazy. I would understand that it may be the cause of a tight budget. However, isn't that why others like ADV accumulated so much money and time to plan an Evangelion live-action movie so that the fans would at least not be that too disappointed.
Plus, If you found yourself tallying on the titles that are game and animation based movies, let me know. I am fairly sure that there is more popular movies that are based on animation.
Now, that we finally know some more truths about the movie, I would like to know what is the range of age groups that the makers of the movie are aiming for. Probably for everyone, right? right.
It may suck, it might not, or it might just give you a laugh for how ridiculous it may be.
I love DBZ and Dragonball (trying to forget GT... ughh). They are a sure classic to me, but if the creators think that they could pull it off, then I just need something to boost some confidence.

I fail to see how more people, or "the masses" watching something is such a terrible thing. I dont subscribe to the notion that something is only good so long as it is "underground" and that as soon as something becomes "popular" its suddenly not as cool.
My personal take? Im not a DBZ fan at all. I hate the animation style and I find the storyline ludicrous. However... I am really looking forward to this movie! Mostly from a technical standpoint; I really want to know how those overblown character designs will translate to live action.
I will defonatly be watching it.

I say they should give it a try. When Speed Racer came out, I thought it was going to bomb, but it did surprisingly well. Although, the problem creating a Dragon Ball Z-based live-action movie would be the audience appeal.

For which one? Do you mean age or gender?

Oh sorry. I meant to add age in there.

Wasn't Speed Racer a horrible movie?

Sorry, ruin was too strong a word. I meant that for me, if the movie was really bad, it would be hard to watch Dragon Ball without thinking about the movie. At least for a while.

It's based on the original series (far superior to Z and GT) which is good but it still looks pump. I'll wait and see.
