Aile back I remember guys on here saying when it was first announced the Marvel animes would be released English only at first, that they wouldn't watch them dubbed. I was surprised by this as most guys I know, even those who only watch subs, say they don't want to see Marvel or DC characters in Japanese, be it an anime or Japanese dub of an American cartoon. And with them out now, I thought I'd ask if anyone has ever watched them, or Gotham Knight subbed, and their thoughts. While I haven't gotten to watching the Marvel animes on dvd yet, I did see one segment of Gotham Knight with Japanese audio and Engish closed caption subs. (It was the only one available). For me, while it fit with how Bruce looked in it, it was too weird to see Batman with non-English audio, not counting him speaking another language to a foreigner in-universe.

I saw all of X-Men both subbed and dubbed and definitely prefer the dub on it. While the dub might not be perfect, its biggest flaw - the way Storm is portrayed - is an equally big flaw in Japanese, and the dub performance for Beast was outstanding; I even ranked it as a runner-up for 2011's best male dub performance. I never felt that the non-Japanese characters sounded right in Japanese, especially Wolverine and Professor X.

Japanese dub of a Japanese cartoon?(It was produced MAINLY by Madhouse in association with Marvel, the reverse of the Mega Man cartoon) A dub is a production of a show, taking out the original audio and replacing it with the language of the importing country. For the exceptions(maybe more) of Gundam Unicorn, Afro Samurai, Transformers Micron Legend/Armada, Bakugan and other shit(which Unicorn isn't an English dub cause it WAS produced by Sunrise and the Afro Samurai only being in English), the Japanese audio usually IS the original language of Japanese cartoons. Just sayin'.

Well, technically a "dubbing" of something can also mean "adding a soundtrack in general," not just a new language over the original, like ADR work for dialogue and sound effects. In the case of anime, when most people see the word "dub," they automatically think of "2nd language over the original one," (usually English over Japanese) when in actuality it can just be "either the original or alternate voice track" in reference. I suppose I could've changed the thread title to "Marvel anime and Gotham Knight -- original Japanese voices," but that felt kind of pretentious to me.
So let this post be a further clarification of what I mean when I say "thoughts on Japanese dub" refers to "the initial conceptualization and implementation of adding a voice track in general to the already understood Japanese production," which technically, is a dubbing in that sense, not just an addition of a new voice track over an original. Anyway, I've heard both versions for Batman: Gotham Knight, but I'm completely biased for Kevin Conroy, as I grew up hearing him for pretty much all my child-based memories of any kind of Batman animation whatsoever. Meanwhile, I've heard Tesshou Genda and Shinchiro Miki enough in other roles that I really didn't get the sense of Bruce Wayne/Batman enough to really discern them from other characters they've played in other anime titles. I think Miki played Wayne pretty well as did Genda for Batman, but I don't feel either were particularly great at their alter egos. I've also seen one episode of Iron Man in Japanese, but again, I've been completely biased/spoiled by Robert Downey Jr.'s portrayal and can't really imagine anyone else playing the role of Tony Stark, ever. Keiji Fujiwara has a fairly distinct voice that I think compliments the cocky side of Stark pretty well, but I generally find it difficult to pull off "snarky" tones in Japanese, let alone for an anime script. I will say he's got the womanizing part down, though. |
