This is one of those titles that I wonder 'what is so great about this series?' I look at it and it looks like it has cute characters, but more something for the moe or even loli crowd (since they of course, do NOT look their age). However I know its a comedy and from what I hear, is FULL of Japanese puns and whatnot.

My first con was just last year and all I saw/heard about was Lucky Star this and Lucky Star that, and people doing the little dance. Now, Haruhi was still very popular and that series seems to have alot more going for it than chibified girls dancing around with pom poms^^ This is just how I see it. (No, I have not seen Haruhi yet, but because of how much I saw/heard about it at the con, I'm intrigued and eventually will...)

One more note: I LOVE Azumanga. That's the only thing that I can compare it to that perhaps, might be similar? Definately not one to collect their figurines and everything. They are cute characters, but meh :/ Maybe me liking Azumanga is one thing, but still, could someone tell me why Lucky Star is amazing? I'd like to know and MAY even look into it in the future if it catches my attention enough...

It's a comedy that caters to anime otakus with lots of references to other anime, thus lots of anime fans love it. Personally, I couldn't get into it. I just found it annoying, but maybe I'm not in the majority.

The catchy opening sequence has somewhat of a tendency to draw certain people to watch it. Whether or not they make it past the first episode depends on how they enjoyed the first half of it.

Well, for starters, I love Azumanga Daioh to!! I haven't watched Lucky Star yet, but it's sitting in a pile of CD's next to my computer, so I will get on it soon. I haven't heard much hype about it, but now that you mention it, it seems pretty popular here and there, so it can't be that bad, unless only mindless droids have been watching it and saying how awesome it is. In any case, hopefully it lives up to all the noise being made about it.

P.S. - Kruszer, did you mean majority or minority??

There was supposed to be a "not" in that sentence somewhere. *fixed* It's my stupid antivirus scanning, it makes my PC run really slow and causes stuff like that. Mad

I really like this series. When I first heard about it I thought it seemed stupid, that it was just another moe thing. Bu then I watched and found myself very entertained by the comedy. The comedy is, as others have stated, otaku comedy. Also, it's not really your common slap stick kind of thing, the comedy is allot calmer and is conversation based. That's why I liked it so much.

As for why it got so popular, well I can see to reasons. One, it appeals to the otaku fan base, much like Genshiken, and NHK did. And two, hype from japan. This series was quite popular in japan and the momentum got carried over here.

And as for Haruhi, I haven't watched allot of it or anything, but from what I've seen of it, it seems a bit like Lucky Star in a way (again, I haven't watched much of it). Though I wouldn't say that they were the same (different comedy style and plot base). But it seems ok, I've been thinking about watching it.

I blame the catchy dances >_>

But hmmm so far it doesn't sound like it would interest me :/ It's cute if you see an anime with a suttle (but obvious) reference to another anime. I still remember one series (can't remember which...) with the quote 'once again, I cut another unworthy object' slipped into it. Actually I think I've seen two series do that. But little things like that are nice if it's stuck in there, but I'm not sure if I could take a whole series full of references >_> Almost like a Japanese version of CG comedy from America that plays with pop culture references, I suppose.

Some people compare Lucky Star to a show like Family Guy because of all the references involved in it, which I can see that comparison. I'd say that it's more like Seinfeld because of the comedy style and the plot layout. Over all I can see why some people wouldn't enjoy it. Comedy's a hard genera to make it appeal to everyone. Everyone has different tastes in their shows.

Because it tells you quite often to buy Haruhi DVDs.

Mushi-Man made references to NHK, which I have watched and Genshiken, which I own and will watch soon. So on the topic of references, can Lucky Star also be compared to School Rumble, which had some halarious references throughout the seasons, spoiler[with the Initial D reference in the 'riding the bike to school scene'] a particular standout?

P.S. - That's fine Kruszer, just a technicality I guess. Though I would hate it if my computer did that to me!!

It's sort of like how generic shounen anime are very popular. It's because it appeals to a wide variety of people and isn't too hard to grasp. A generic shounen adventure series appeals to a lot of people looking for an adventure and isn't hard to follow; Lucky Star appeals to the otaku and isn't overly hard to follow.

Basically, it pleases the crowd that it wants to, hype begins, and BOOM! popularity.

Well I haven't seen School Rumble yet (though I plan to) so I couldn't say for sure. If School Rumble has a significant amount of anime references then you could compare them in the same matter. I don't no if you could compare the two series in other ways or not, but it may not be to much of a stretch (once again, I haven't seen it yet).

Lucky Star is definetly an Otaku anime, it makes a whole bunch of refrences to older anime (and some not so old), even if you cant catch the jokes right away, if you buy the DVDs it comes with Liner notes that tell where all the jokes are and what Anime they are referring to. When first watching Lucky Star you might see it as overly boring just because of how slow paced and layed back it is, although I would give it a few more chances, after watching a few episode you start getting interested in whatever they decide to discuss next XP

That might be because they changed directors after the 4th (or so) episode. The directors had different approaches on how to do the comedy and the episode layout.

Dance + Kyoto Animation + Aya Hirano + Haruhi tie-ins + otaku references + appealing female characters possessing varying degrees and types of moe. Additionally in English-speaking fandom, a.f.k..
