Interesting news comes from the recent Dengeki Books Autumn Festival; those involved in famed tsundere magical girl anime 灼眼のシャナ / Shakugan no Shana appeared on stage “hinting” at the prospect of a new season.

Seiyuu Rie Kugimiya (Shana) and Satoshi Hino (male protagonist), the original author Yashichiro Takahashi, the illustrator Noizi Ito and the producer all appeared on stage as part of the event, discussing various aspects of the show.

Leaving their onstage antics aside, they soon let slip their surprise to the gleeful audience, saying with respect to part of the original work that “this may be turned into an anime later”.

For “may” you can fairly safely read “will”, as nobody would permit such an announcement otherwise. They soon left the stage after this, leaving the audience with the hint firmly in mind.

Via Dengeki.

The announcement is not at all surprising, given the success of the series. However, many fans question whether the series will be able to reconcile itself with the original work, although it has to be said that such concerns probably will have no bearing on the success of the title.

[EDIT: Changed your title to be more appealing. -TK]

An interesting bit of news. Although, I didn't exactly go nuts for the franchise I did enjoy both seasons and wouldn't mind another since the ending to season 2 left some loose ends.

Now is the time to demand season 2 on R1 DVD. More profits means more Shana.

I've never seen it, but I'm going to pick up the boxset tomorrow, so there's my support. Smile

Shana has always been one of my favorite franchises with one of my favorite cast in anime.

I liked the development that the characters gained and the way that they dealt with the love-triangle in the second season, though the downplay of the action and the overall lack of the surrealistic feel that made the first season so appealing to me had left something to be desired, or is it that the adapted novel volumes lacked that as well? Either way, I hope that the balance between drama and action will return in the third season.

Only if you're Japanese and buying the Japanese DVDs, then it barely makes a difference to JCStaff.

I was already expecting a third season, since I read about other people's speculations on how the second season ended (I think it was spoiler[Yuuji's footprints in the snow disappearing..] something like that).

I didn't like how the second season was mostly about spoiler[Yuuji's relationship with the two girls (and other people's relationships as well - Yuuji's parents, Eita and Ogata, etc etc)] but I do agree with your last statement. I don't think I would have enjoyed the second season if it was mostly action either, so a balance of drama and action would certainly be ideal.

I found season 2 to be far more entertaining personally because Yuji wasn't so uselless. spoiler[He learned to defend himself so he wasn't so reliant on Shana and then to actually be effective in combat himself as well.] Although, I was rather disappointed with how it ended spoiler[like how they handled him choosing Shana over Yoshida (Poor Yoshida. Crying or Very sad) ] and the spoiler[classic non-ending where the immediate crisis is resolved but they still have the main story to deal with.]

I would certainly welcome more, I bought the Geneon singles.

I considered Shana a better Bleach than Bleach.

A question for any who have bought the set, I fondled it in my local Best Buy, and it says episodes 1-24 + OVA. Is that true?

I am seriously considerling the $50 outlay just for the OVA.

I bought it because I liked the box. I own the singles as well. Of course.. Right Stuf must have had quite a few preorders of it because they ran out after I ordered just prior to the 9/30 release date.

I'm hoping that's one of the Geneon things they are hoping to get later this month.

I really really want to see the 2nd season licensed. A 3rd season would be cool too, but I haven't seen the 2nd yet and don't want to go to the subs to watch it when I started on the dub version.

And you know this because you work for them right? Sales here can influence productions in Japan. The Japanese get money from this market and on occasion even depend on that money to fund future projects. If a property sales well in both Japan and other areas, it certainly can't hurt it's chances of having more made.

That's only ever "worked" for Big O season II funded by Adult Swim. I've never seen concrete evidence that any American money has ever influenced any decision in Japan, but I guess I've never seen any concrete evidence against it. Still, it's highly unlikely what we buy changes what the studios are going to spend their money on, that only counts if you're buying the Japanese R2's.

True, but that's happened, what?....like twice only? With Hellsing and Big O, otherwise I'm drawing a blank and would tend to agree with him...

That takes big money and big popularity neither of which Shana possoesses.

Depends on the studio. The vast majority of companies focus on what Japanese consumers want. However, Bones and especially Gonzo (which rose to prominence during the R1 boom, so its financial foundation lies in overseas fans) are examples of studios that depend primarily on American sales.

As the western markets went down the toilet, so did Gonzo. It's no wonder that newer shows are mediocre (overseas revenue dried up, and Japanese rarely bought their DVDs to begin with), and they've rushed to focus on Japanese otaku. That's where Blassreiter, Rosario to Vampire, and Strike Witches come in.
