We at Reverse Thieves (www.reversethieves.com) are looking to do something a little different.
We are proposing a project called the Otaku Diaries. We are looking for people who consider themselves anime fans to participate in an anonymous survey. It will be profiling the lives, loves, and losses of these individuals and how their hobby has related to shaping them. We will also be looking for patterns as well as differences in the cases. We are looking for diverse people who are not afraid to get personal, questions will include topics like prior relationships, profession, and sexuality. If you are interested here is how it is going to work. Send us an email at [email protected] with a brief description of yourself include your age, sex, and location. No names need be exchanged and your anonymity will be protected, create a separate e-mail account just for this survey if you wish. If you are selected to participate, you will be given a case # to which all your answers will be attributed. After all the data is collected we will be doing several blog posts about the results. We are not just interested in numbers, we are interested in peoples' stories. We hope to start at the end of February, depending on the number of responses. Thank you! So what exactly would the end goal or result of this project? If I understand correctly, this isn't supposed to be a statistical survey. You're looking to go in depth with a select group. What are you planning to do with these people's stories?
P.S. You should change the title of this thread. The way it reads now it sounds like something to do with fanfiction. EDIT: Yeah, that's better. Last edited by ikillchicken on Wed Jan 14, 2009 1:30 am; edited 1 time in total |

I agree with that person who murders chickens; I'd like to know what exactly you're purpose/goal of your study is. Are you trying to prove a point? Debunk a prejudice? As of right now I'm not seeing a clear point to these surveys...

I guess there is no concrete specified "goal" like our previous experiments. We are not really trying to prove X or disprove Y about anime fans.
The best way I can explain it is with an image. Imagine anime fandom as a white sculpture in a white room. We know the sculpture is there but we can't see what it really looks like. So we fire our questions at the interviewees like colored paints. Some of the questions are going to miss the mark and reveal nothing. But hopefully enough of the questions will hit something to give us a better idea of what the sculpture looks like. Not a definitive picture but a clearer picture. I also hope that something artistic comes out of our endeavors as well. So I really have no idea what exactly we are trying to find other than what anime fans think about being anime fans and how has being anime fans changed their lives. We will see how much people's stories have similar bents. We will also see how much does anime bring people who would otherwise have nothing to do with each other together. Thanks for everyone's interest in the project! |
