I really enjoyed Neo-Tokyo so I'm going to have to keep my eye on this. It must be a pretty old novel if the first film was made in 1981. I'm a little surprised that something this old is getting a new adaption.

Nobuhiko Obayashi (Shounen Keniya) directed the 1981 live-action film with Tomoyo Harada (Shounen Keniya, You Are Umasou), Ryoichi Takayanagi (Shounen Keniya) and Kazue Itou (Mori no Senshi Bonolon, Rurouni Kenshin) as Kazumi, Kōji, and Michiru, respectively.

Actually, the live-action film (1981) starred Yakushimaru Hiroko. (And the heroine's name was changed in the film version.)
Itō Kazue appeared in the TV version (1982).
