So while I have been to conventions before I have never been to an anime convention - this will be my first year.

And I was wondering about the cosplay events. I understand that there are competitions and events, but I can't seem to google up anything that tells me what happens at these things - just pictures.

I am curious about these mysterious events and was wondering if someone might be able to describe what goes on there.

In here, the cosplay competition are usually divided into 2 categories - individual cosplay, and group cosplay.

In the individual cosplay category, each cosplayer gets on the stage. In some events you just have to walk and show off your costume, sort of like in a fashion show, but in other events you have to portray the character your cosplaying as by saying one of his/her memorable quotes. You can also get other individual cosplayers (just one or two) to go on stage with you, even if they're from other series, to make it more interesting (or maybe if you're nervous and you just want someone else with you).

As for the group cosplay, I've seen 2 kinds of groups. One has characters from one anime, the other kind is a crossover group that has characters from different anime, video games, etc. Each group performs a skit, maybe a memorable scene from an anime, or something original that the group themselves created. They're usually comedy skits cause it's easier to catch the audience's (and judges') attention that way.

Almost forgot to mention that there are judges in each category. They're the ones who decide who will win, but there are times when it's up to the guests to decide. In one event I went to, the guests were asked to vote for a cosplayer (on that event) that caught their eye. Sort of a popularity contest, I guess. Like a voter's choice. Sometimes they have that only as a separate category too.
