As the Top 10 best / top 5 worst anime topic shows, many of us have a list of favorite anime, though many posters in that topic do treat that title literally and try to find a list of best 10 anime rather than his 10 favorite.

It's possible that the number of anime characters is too vast for anyone to really think about favorite anime characters, but who knows. While thinking about this question, you might be interested in the favorite character personality type topic. I don't think these two topics are quite the same--a person's favorite character type may very well be that which is most likely to produce characters he likes, but there can certainly be exceptional characters of other types that makes it onto his favorite characters list. It would be interesting to compare and contrast the answers in the two topics--some people in the favorite personality type topic answered the question by first listing their favorite characters, for example.

So then, who are your favorite anime characters, if you have such a list, and why?

So, my favorites (I numbered them to make it easier to read the list, but they are really in no particular order)

1. Mai Tokiha My-Hime: An obvious tsundere who is defined by a lot more than just being a tsundere. Well, that qualification is cheating: She is the protagonist, while most tsunderes are at best the deuteragonist. That and her being a tsundere has little to do with why I like her. I like her because she is a kind, responsible, and strong girl who shoulders a lot of burden. She smiles when she can, and she cries when she needs to. She responds to grief in a very human way, but she can overcome it and come out wiser. She's the sort of protagonist that I can really cheer on, always hoping that she'd get her happy ending.

2. Athrun Zala Gundam Seed (I'm going to reserve this explanation for later)

3. Sinon Kouzuki Starship Operators: I really like these subdued but competent leaders. Welkin Gunther of Valkyria Chronicles (the game, not so much the anime) is another example. She's quiet but not withdrawn, a leader but not overbearing, intelligent but not flaunting. I think a lot of it has to do with the style of Starship Operators: It's a very intimate story that follows the Amaterasu crew closely. We get to see much of Sinon's thought process. Thus, even though she pulls off some brilliant maneuvers, she never comes off as "ubermensch, super genius" like Roy Mustang of Fullmetal Alchemist or Lelouch Lamperouge of Code Geass, which makes her all the more likable.

4. (recent addition) Millia <various> Turan Last Exile: Fam, the Silver Wing: The dynamic of the main characters is why I and many others compare Last Exile: Fam to Final Fantasy XII. The apparent protagonist is really a support character who does little in the story--Fam and Vaan are both essentially bystanders. Meanwhile, the story is really about someone else--Millia and a set of characters in FFXII. It's really interesting to see her character grow gradually from the haughty princess in the beginning to the responsible leader toward the end, with each step offering something new. She's the reason I like the main cast of LE2 much better than the main cast in LE1.

5. (recent addition) Sayaka Miki Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Watching someone carry that heavy burden of magical girlship, struggling with the pain and anguish... It is superb to behold. spoiler[Her dreams were too much for her. I imagine that, in the end, they destroyed the dreamer. The tears of lamentation she surely shed as she died... They must have been quite sweet to the taste.]

My favorite characters shift around somewhat, with Millia and Sayaka displacing some previous characters: Nina Wang of My-Otome and Accela Warrick of Solty Rei.

Interesting topic. I could easily think of 30+ characters that would make my list, but I'll leave that for later (if I feel like it).

In general though my favorite characters tend to be mostly somewhat older and exhibit qualities or traits that I find admirable. Depth of character and general badassery are both definetily a plus, but not a requirement. For example, Spike, Balalaika, Guts, Ryoma Nagare and Tsubasa Nishikiori would all make my list.
