Madoka Magica and Squid Girl being DVD-only disappoints me. I've imported the volume 1 LE for Madoka Magica and I'll continue importing them. Madoka Magica is one show you don't want to release as a barebones DVD. As Aniplex's BDs are region free, couldn't they have tried to get Aniplex to help them with production? Sure their reasoning makes sense - because no one expected a UK release to be as pretty as the US one, so people imported.
I already have the Sentai BD of The World God Only Knows, but I am very glad to see it getting a release here (even if it is DVD only). With Squid Girl, I'll probably still get Media Blasters' blu-ray release, but buy the MangaUK DVD for my little brother. I will probably pick up their Blue Exorcist release though. The ending of that series did royally piss me off and I have been hesitant about importing AniplexUSA's DVDs (£30 a volume?!). |

Oh, wow.
“Aniplex USA Blu-Ray exports of Madoka Magica means it is most likely not viable for a UK Blu-Ray release.” - however, they have (possibly too late) blocked exports directly from TRSI (although that doesn't stop third parties like UP1 and RACS buying them and reselling at a premium). |

They also have Chaos;Head.
Just recently. A lot of AniplexUSA stuff (including Madoka) can't be shipped outside of the US and Canada. |

Recently Madoka and other Aniplex titles have started stating "Due to licensing restrictions, this product can only be shipped to the United States and Canada."
I've heard from people with existing pre-orders that they will still be honoured, but you can no longer place orders from the UK directly on TRSI. |

One thing I have to ask is...why was Madoka Magica region free in the first place? Both Japan and America are Region A, so why did Aniplex USA make it available to be watched in Region because territories in the first place? |

Ah, okay. Thanks for the info. Good thing they are at least still going to ship the existing pre-orders. Back to the news article, I'd like to see more BD releases from Manga UK. I really wanted that region B K-ON! box. |

I know that feel! I'll be importing Sentai's season 2 blu-rays just because now I doubt the UK will ever see K-ON! on blu-ray. |

Probably because they are mainly worried about importing into Japan, since the region codes are the same there's no point in locking it. Alternatively, it could be because they are part of Aniplex Japan and that is just the way they are set up, since all Japanese BDs are region free. [edit - added quote since more replies appeared since I started writing]
You are dealing with a markup if you go that route, since they will probably have to buy it at retail price themselves, assuming they are still able to obtain it at all after the embargo. |

Manga barely releases any BDs anyway, the market just isn't here for any viable BD releases, they already cancelled several attempts @ releasing some, like FMA:B and Haruhi, so unless they force the issue and stop getting DVD releases in favour of BD releases i very much doubt they'll be any BD releases of anything for at least a couple more years and maybe longer if the BD market in general doesn't pick up over here |

Why did no one tell me this?!
Yeah...I'm hoping they are still able to get them. Otherwise I'll have to bug some American/Canadian friends I know.
While we know that long running shows are a no-no, they could at least try with some of the more well known shorter shows, like Madoka Magica. The thing with Madoka Magica though is, Aniplex USA, Madman Entertainment and even the series' Italian distributors are giving it the smexy limited edition treatment with a BD release. The only country getting a worse job on Madoka is Germany (3 DVD singles) - but even they get an artbox if all of the volumes are ordered. Releasing an inferior product than everyone worldwide, especially in this day and age when finding a multi-region player online is almost as easy as finding porn, will not do MangaUK many favours. The only hope we seem to have in the UK for anime on blu-ray is KazéUK, because they have most of Europe to fall back on if something sells like shit over here. The thing is, it's all well and good saying that there's no market (to be fair, blu-ray hasn't been adopted as well in the UK as say, Japan) but companies will need to try and force it at some point; look at FUNimation, they have pretty much everything as a DVD/Combi pack; I wouldn't mind that myself. |
