I have to give props to these guys, they got good tastes in music, putting Madlib, Yesterday's New Quintet, and Jay Dee on alot of their little commericals and "coming up" segments. Some nice exposure for Madlib, one of the greatest beat makers alive today. I also heard a rumor that MF Doom (the MC I worship as god) is going to be doing a theme song for an upcoming Adult Swim show. That would be too ill. Of course I imagine that many of the peeps here don't know Madlib, Doom, etc., are because they are underground hip hop, but you should!

These days most of the underground and mainstream aren't even comparable. Just because you don't like mainstream, doesn't mean you won't like underground. Its the same thing with poppy mainstream Rock versus underground Rock.

Can you describe Underground? The only stuff I really listen too is some older things, like Run DMC.

Well, if you like Run DMC and hip hop from that era, I would say you can definantly get into underground. Describing underground hip hop is kinda hard, since the styles all over the place, but it usually lacks the anoying bs associated with alot of whats on MTV. Corny sounding beats, watered down lyrics. I see more attempts at creativity in the structure and topics of lyrics, more original flows, and better and more creative beats. I'd say on average some of the more known undeground MCs are alot more concerned about their music instead of making some poppy crap so they can line their pockets. I do think the Rock comparison is good. Right now hip hop is where Rock was in the 80's, mainstream is ran by substanceless fluff, while the more interesting things and exploration are going on underneath. I'd say start out with MF Doom since he retains the oldschool aesthetic but completely twists it around into his own personal style. I'm sure you can apreciate his lyrics for his witty point of views and rediculous references. His flow is very clever, he comes off like a drugged up, whineo genius with world domination asperiations. He only rhymes over quality production, whether his own or provided by others.

Well said. This has got me interested. I'm really bored with rappers just talking about their "bling" (god, if I hear one more idiot use that word...it seems to be what VH1, the "adult" and "mature" version of MTV, uses it ever other word to describe people like Trump and Oprah) I really need to get some new stuff to listen to, so I'll check out this Madlib guy. At least the rock-rap phase is over it seems, and I have new matterial from Nine Inch Nails to look forward to.

I don't have any solo stuff from MF Doom, but I do have a few songs he did with MC Paul Barman and Aesop Rock. Totally good stuff.
Didn't Doom do a project last year under a different moniker? I read a review of it in an indie mag when I was in New Orleans, and it was described as a cross between Deltron 3030 and Dr. Octagon. How sweet is THAT?

Oh, yea thats Viktor Vaughn - Vaudeville Villain. Definantly pick it up, its great. Its like in my top 5 favorite albums ever. Lyrically its his best work ever, plus the production is like oldschool beats from another dimension. There was also a Viktor Vaughn - Venemous Villain released recently, but it isn't as good because, "Dub it off your man, Don't spend that ten bucks, I did it for the advance, The back-end sucks." Still pretty tight though, but get Vaudeville Villain first.

Been listening to some stuff, and I've got to say its damn good. Madlib, Aesop Rock and Jedi Mind Trick have all sparked my interest, and I'll be looking at more of it. Thanks man.
And on another non related note, I could be the only member on this forum to have a avatar of a Tezuka character Not drawn by him, but still one of his creations. Just wanted to show ya that there are still loyal fans left, especially after that pissing match that was on the anime forum a couple of days ago (J-Syxx will know what I'm talking about).

Is it from Dororo? I have to also say Aesop Rock is incredibly talented. I would suggest any of his albums or EPs. Also for Madilb I highly suggest Quasimoto - The Unseen.

Yea, its the main character from Dororo. Its art from the new video game that was just released. Too bad the american version doesn't have the original cover. If an artbook comes out we probobly won't get it either. Too bad too, Samura is probobly my favorite artist (though I'm really loving Masashi Tanaka's Gon lately).
