I had been tantalized sufficiently by the introduction to Journey on Penny Arcade that I was ready to make my online console game purchase--then I found out it was PSN-exclusive.
Unfortunately this review doesn't help. It sounds and looks like a lot of fun! |

For the past 2 weeks, I've been enjoying Journey. I enjoy how well the gameplay to each level is varied so that the minimalist controls don't feel like it lacks depth. For example, one level involves surfing sand slopes while enjoying one of the most awe-inspiring views in the entire game. Then the next level brings in a more serious sense of dread by introducing said stone snakes.
Communicating in that game is really iffy at times, depending on who you get stuck with. Being a kind gamer, I try to guide my partner to every power-up symbol and hidden glyphs/achievements; however, it gets frustrating when they don't understand the reason why I bring them out off the beaten trail. Aside from Journey, I've been checking out this indie developed visual novel called Cradle Song. Even though a demo is the only thing available at the moment, I am floored at how well produced this game is considering the last indie VN's I played were Katawa Shoujo and Analog: A Hate Story. Also, I attended Super NorCal Install, an anime fighting game tournament in the Calif. Bay Area. I did really poor in KOF13, but placed in Melty Blood:AACC. I also got the chance to play more Gundam Extreme Vs. but couldn't participate in the tourney since I lacked a partner. Overall, it was a great experience and it was fun seeing the new players who traveled out from SoCal and even Washington for this event. |

I got Journey as soon as it was available for non-Plus members. I'm so glad I did, I've had so much fun with it. During my first playthough I was captivated by all the sights and how enjoyable something so simple could be. Interacting with other players is tons of fun as well, even if all you can do is chirp rhythmically at each other. I somehow felt really accomplished when I was able to get someone to meditate with me for a Trophy (most players would ditch me as soon as I sat down), and right after that my partner guided me to the desert flower for another Trophy! Now that I've played through and know where everything is, I have fun going back and guiding players to things that are hard to find. And I like how the credits tells you who you encountered along the way. It's really short (just a couple hours, tops) but it's not that expensive and it's a very enthralling game.

I'm pretty stoked for this Monster World collection. I'll totally have to get it.

Kid Icarus Uprising: I wonder how long Pit's going to be in the spotlight once people get their hands on his game. I can only hope he sticks around for a while. It might be another ten years before he gets another game again. X3
Atelier: I've always long since adored the Atelier series. Granted I haven't played anything pre-Iris era, but the games are still a mildly entertaining experience. I regrettably have not yet finished Rorona, I haven't yet acquired Totori and we're getting Meryl soon. Blast it all with being too busy to finish anything these days. P.S. The barrel gag never gets old for me. Wonder Boy: I have never tried Wonder Boy. Sounds like a fun romp through simpler times. Ys Hits Steam: I wonder if Origins is ever going to get released on any kind of port. The fan translation is all people have to go on and I'm surprised it hasn't gotten any sort of remake or port yet like Ys I and II did. Three Companies: I have no idea what they could be planning, but I doubt it's anything we're getting. Journey: This sounds an awful lot like Limbo (heck that interior screenshot reminds me of the factory section), just without the gruesome child-maiming. It definitely looks artistic from the screenshots I've seen and the minimalist story will no doubt draw all kinds of interesting discussions. Sine Mora:
That sounds like one awesome cast of characters. Btw, she's a rabbit woman: http://www.xblafans.com/wp-content/uploads//2012/01/SineMoraRabbit1.jpg Last edited by belvadeer on Fri Mar 23, 2012 10:44 am; edited 1 time in total |

Wonderboy collection on LiveArcade? FFFFF... YES!
The Capcom Collection: Nice thought, though I already have the games I want out of that one already. And yes, it's nine games, since Final Fight: Double Impact also includes Magic Sword. An odd mixup (even if both are Capcom games), but eh... I like both of them a whole lot, so there's that. |

I'll say. I spent the last weekend watching excessively large amounts of basketball, and in between ads for Bud Light and Axe deodorant, and I saw maybe half-a-dozen ads for this game. I was horribly confused, since the demographics seemed all wrong, but it makes more sense of Nintendo is just doing a crazy marketing blitz. |

The new Banpresto game seems really interesting because of the fact that Capcom is really the only company that seems to be playing it safe. Namco appears to be including Neneko from Yumeria, and Sega appears to be including Gemini from Sakura Wars V, so who knows whose going to appear in this crossover game.

I'm really happy to see that Journey got a positive review. I've played through it several times now, and it is truly an amazing game. It looks so minimalist at first, but as you move through it, you realize everything has been designed perfectly to grab your attention and keep you in a constant state of awe and wonder. Truly a gem of a game for this generation.
Also, just wanted to point out that Warriors Orochi 3 released digitally on the PS3 this week, on the 20th. I've got it downloaded already. I look forward to finding time for it, as I'm busy with Tales of Graces f right now. |

Sony did the whole AR Trading Card thing outside of Eye of Judgment but with Invizimals in Europe. Invizimals is actually pretty popular in a few European countries, and is the best selling new IP on PSP (yes, I know that's not saying a lot). The sticker scam seems to work as those involved keep on pushing out new sets.

I would be tempted to pick up Kid Icarus, but I've been stung twice in a row by big 3DS releases over the past couple of months being downright unplayable (Resident Evil, Metal Gear) thanks to the truly awful controls the 3DS offers.
I'm sorely tempted to avoid any games that step outside of the 2D plane on the console at this point. Ninja Gaiden 3 is out this week anyway, so between that, Yakuza Dead Souls and Tales of Graces I don't have time for other games right now, so it's just as well.
It's tempting to label this column as tiresomely contrarian, but I somehow doubt I need to... Amusing to hear you suggest something is pretentious though, given the way you write of your reviews. |

All I have to say is, Uprising is amazing. The control issue is blown way out of proportion. The game is packed with content.
While I might have agreed with you on MGS3 (Peace Walker controls...ugh), I disagree completely with Revelations being unplayable: If you turn on gyro-aiming, you will find it hard to turn back to regular dual-analog setups, especially with that precision and speed. Kid Icarus is similar in that it offers you...actually, more like makes you swallow a new-style control scheme that goes against conventions...and once it clicks it works all the way. |
