I'm Just throwing this out as my first offical post, i don't expect much out of it, but here goes anyways...
I'm obsessed. I fawn over, spend money on, time, energy, effort, on watching anime. i can't help myself. I frankly don't want to be helped either. It's not an unhealthy obsession, i don't ditch my friends becuase the new episode of bleach, soul eater, AND vampire knight all came out on the same night. And i don't hide in my room all day, I don't have that luxury thanks to my profession (yea profession, maybe i should introduce myself, hi im Alex, 20yrs old, Canadian Air Force.) but every spare moment, second, of every day i get i devote to this....insane craving! Yes i have a life outside the anime, no im not dragged to it, i go voluenteeringly, but i feel like, at least the people around me, don't understand. i have great friends! really i do, we laugh and drink and go on vacation together. i'd take a bullet, literally, for any of them, but they still don't get me... here's my question to everyone who makes it this far now.... Am I Alone? Am I the only one who is feeling this lost? I can't be right? - confessions of an AirForceOtaku |

I think that being passionate about your anime fandom (or any fandom, for that matter) is a good thing...provided it doesn't interfere with your general work and social life. You're obviously in a very challenging career, and if, like you say, you manage to find plenty of time to hang out with your friends, I think you're doing just fine (and probably better than me, for that matter
![]() And yes, I completely get the "they don't understand me" bit. No one in my day-to-day life is any sort of anime fan, and few of them even get why I watch what I watch. That being said, I've managed to make some great friends online through my fandom, so I think it's an even trade. |

I'm not exactly sure what you're saying here. If you just mean that your friends don't understand why you're so into anime, then I'd say it's quite normal. People often don't get others interests. Don't worry though, I'm sure there are plenty of other anime fans out there, who understand. I'm not sure what you mean about being "lost" though.

What exactly don't your friends get? Everyone needs an interest in something that they can spend loads of money on, it's normal. Whether it's anime or trains or war stuff or whatever or gardening. People who don't have passionate intersts in stuff are really annoying because it makes them awfully hard to buy presents for. You're not doing anything wrong, you're not a creepy loser with no friends who wants to marry an anime character or anything like that. Don't worry about it, you're fine.

lost in the sense that, not only do they not understand and i would like them to, but also in the sense that , obviously im not alone with most of these feelings, globaly, nationally, and probably even locally, but alone in the sense of not having an imidiate friend who shares my interests.
And yea your right about not being the overly eccentric fan of the fandom itself and want to marry a character or seclude myself completely, instead of just being, as was very poetically described, as passionate. (but its not like you've never said what if once before right? haha) |

I'm sure many folk here are in a similar position, myself included. That you're willing to make merry with friends whilst indulging in Otaku delights is certainly something positive though. |

Aww I hope you find a nice anime obsessed girl to marry some day. I count myself one of the lucky ones for finding myself a nice anime obsessed boy to marry. I wish you the best of luck and no you're not alone. Just do what I did convert them!

Well, you should just transfer to the U.S. Air Force. I sold off some anime last year, and one of the great buyers I met was the sponsor for an anime club at the U.S. Air Force Academy ![]() I tell people about my hobby, because I find anime fascinating from a film and culture point of view, and more often than not it leads to talking about Japan mostly. I don't have RL friends in it, though I'm still a relative newbie--a couple of years. My tastes are pretty eclectic as well (Amazing Nurse Nanako on one end and NGE on the other), and being older I wouldn't fit in with the Naruto/Bleach crowd at all. As to sites, I only frequent anime-related sites, not so much otaku, but here's maybe a good starting place. Danny Choo will point you to probably everywhere you want to go: http://www.dannychoo.com/detail/mac/eng/image/12132/Frequently+Visited+Sites.html Not to worry. You are sane. And BTW, thanks for being there for the rest of us... |

I've been a fan for over 13 years now, and have seen over 500 anime so by my standards (and probabally most others here) it's normal to want to watch a lot of what you like. Especially with anime being the vast medium of genres it is; there's always lots to watch and something new. Of course I don't expect many others to go through the stuff as rabidly as I do...

"Why does it seem more real when I'm dreaming then when I'm awake" Ha, sorry. You asking "Am I alone?" reminded me of The Animatirx. Anyways. Your not alone in any sens. Why ells do you think that there is a whole news website devoted to posting info about anime and manga? And why ells are there so many people who post on the forums regularly? The answer is that the people here, for the most part, share your interest. I spend allot of my time on watching anime and reading manga because I love it. We're on the same boat here. Anime is just a bit of a counter-culture kind of thing. It's not quite as excepted as it should be. I have only a few friends that are as into anime as I am. I gets hard some times to not be able to talk about your favorite episode of Cowboy Bebop. Or have a discussion on who you think is the best anime director. But you can find ways to deal with it, that's why I love to come on to this forum.

+1 to the list of people who's real life friends don't like anime.
BTW have you seen Lucky Star? |

You are way better than most of them out there; at least you are not a hikikomori. I am much older than you, don't talk to friends, don't socialize and on the verge of losing my family but still can't help it. Maybe my avatar might explain more about it [JFTR, it's from Welcome to NHK]. ![]() So, don't worry, you are not weird, just a bit different than your fiends[sic] who don't watch anime. ![]() |

I'm with you man, I have a passion for anime myself! I say as long as it doesn't interfere with your personal life it is more healthy than anything to have a passion for a hobby such as anime.
